Australian Development Scholarships These are long term development scholarships providing people with the opportunity to obtain tertiary qualifications at an Australian tertiary institution. Following a successful pilot in 2010-11, Australia will provide up to 30 scholarships to Burmese citizens to undertake postgraduate studies in Australia beginning in the 2013 academic year. Awards will predominately be at Masters level; up-to five undergraduate awards considered for applicants with high potential; in exceptional circumstances PhD awards may be considered for applicants who can demonstrate strong development potential and ability to transfer their research skills, particularly in the areas of focus of Australias aid program, on return to Burma. Australian Leadership Award Scholarships Up to 200 of the most outstanding Australian Development Scholarship applicants across the globe will be offered an Australian Leadership Award in addition to their scholarship. These extra entitlements will include a Leadership for Development Program designed to enhance leadership knowledge and skills. Recipients will be brought together with other Australian Leadership Awardees for leadership training, development discussions and the chance to build valuable networks. Priority Sectors_______________________
The priority areas of study for Australian Development Awards in Burma (Myanmar) are: Basic education, Food security and sustainable economic growth and health (especially focussed on mothers and children) and mining and natural resource management. Study on cross-cutting themes will also be considered including relating to law, public policy, development studies and international relations. The aid program also recognises the serious and sustained decline in the human capital of Burma by including efforts to build the capacity of people and institutions in priority areas.

Further Information
Selections of scholarship recipients are highly competitive and merit based. The selection panel considers the applicants academic and professional achievement and their capacity to contribute to development in Burma on the completion of their studies. The selection process includes assessment of applications, interviews, referee and character checking and can take seniority and employers support into account.
