POLICE STOP BUS ON PROPOSED TENNIS
Shoppers and traders in
Main Street came out and
watched the excitement
unfold last Friday when
three police cars stopped
an Arriva bus and arrested a
young woman passenger.
Traders heard the police
sirens long before the bus
and its following police cars
approached Main Street,
but, as the No. 1b
approached the Town
Crier's Office, one police
car pulled out and ordered it
to stop.
Uniformed police officers
and two plain clothes
officers then boarded the
bus and the young lady was
escorted off , placed in a
police car at the rear and
driven off at speed.

 MAN 'SNAPPED'
AFTER CONTINUOUS
NAGGING
Local Magistrates heard last
week that a Shildon man
eventually 'snapped' and
slapped his former partner
after she persistantly
nagged him about food.
Following the incident, in
mid-November, 41-year old
David Meads, now of
Garbutt Street in Shildon,
appeared before the South
Durham Magistrates sitting
at Newton Aycliffe, where
he entered a 'Guilty' plea to
a charge of 'assault'.'
Ms.Jacqueline Gibson,
appearing on behalf of the
Crown Prosecution Service,
told the Court that, on the
day in question, both Meads
and the injured party had
been drinking.
When the couple were
interviewed by Police after
the event, whilst the injured
party admitted being drunk,
Meads stated that he had
drunk nine pints but was not
drunk.
Ms.Gibson stated that at
around 8.00pm, after the
injured party had been
nagging Meads for some
time about going to get
some food, he finally
turned upon the woman and
slapped her once on the face.
After the incident, the
woman stated that she was
not injured but that her "head
hurt".
In conclusion, Ms.Gibson
told the Court that Meads
was last before the Courts in
1998 for an offence of
'theft'.
Mr.Chris Bunting,
mitigating, stated that the
incident was the final straw
in the couple's seven year
relationship and that,
consequently, the
relationship was completely
over.
He went on to tell the Court
that Meads described his
former partner as an
alcoholic and that, at the
time of the incident, she was
heavily under the influence
of alcohol.
Mr.Bunting stated that
whilst Meads certainly
regretted his actions, he
firmly maintained that he
had been provoked by the
persistent nagging.
The Magistrates handed
Meads a six month
Conditional Discharge.

have been named amongst
the worst in the country for
understanding the language
of the internet
According to research
conducted by the Post
Office, those surveyed only
managed to correctly
identify 58 per cent of
internet terms and phrases.
When asked to define
common internet terms, the
top five least -understood
were: "Cookies" - “ 62 per
cent of people got this
wrong, "Macros" - “ 55 per
cent of people got this
wrong, "Browser" - “ 48 per
cent of people got this
wrong, "HTML"- “ 47 per
cent of people got this
wrong and "Hyperlink" &
"VoIP" - “ 39 per cent of
people got this wrong.
Nationally, around 50 per
cent of people over the
age of 55 do not understand
simple internet terms such
as "browser", "hyperlink"
and "cookies".
In contrast, 70 per cent
of 18 to 24 year olds were
able to correctly define such
terms.

Safety Group is looking at
the possibility of starting a
monthly 'Drop-in'.
The idea is to allow people
to go along and meet
together for a chat.
The Group hopes that by
giving people the
opportunity to socialise with
others, it will help them feel
better about themselves.
It would also be an
opportunity for people to
ask questions about
community safety issues,
talk to others and share
experiences.
A spokesperson for the
Community Safety Group
said: "The Group would be
very informal and would
develop very much as its
