The aim of this assignment is to understand the practical application of microcontroller based system and design approach of the complicated practical system. In the assignment research has to be carried out with different type of microcontrollers, Applications and using the particular microcontroller device design must be considerate for a practical problem. PART A
Research -I There are five major 8- bit microcontrollers available in the market, which are freescale semiconductors (formally Motorola: e.g. 68HC11), Intels 8085, Atmels, AVR, Zilogs Z8 and microchip PIC microcontroller. An embedded product is controlled by one of these microcontrollers in practical systems. However for a high computation process microprocessors and dSP processors are used. Task 1 (P1-1) Describe what does mean by embedded product (explain the concept using a practical application) and identify the major architect deferents between microcontrollers and microprocessors? (Use appropriate diagrams in your explanation) Microchip products are becoming more famous in the embedded world, Because of their reputation in the technology and variation of their family. Microchip mid-range family widely used in general practical applications, for high range computations 24series or dSP microchips are used. Identify and describe the PIC mid-range features and discuss the major different between mid range and 18 series PIC microcontrollers. (You must consider the architecture of mid range (16 series) and 18 series microcontrollers)
Research - II Microprocessors/microcontrollers are exiting new device in the field of electronics control. These devices are an abstract version of combinational and sequential logic concept. Microprocessor based system design used a single chip to control the system; however inputs and output of the control system used to communicate with the environment/external circuits.
PART B
Scenario According to the new traffic plan in Dehiwala which is affected from mid of October, for control the traffics in Maliban junction up to William Grinding Mill. Police Headquarters said the new traffic plan has been imposed to reduce the amount of Traffic during the morning rush and that after 7.45 am the usual normal practiced traffic plan will come into effect. However the ministry of transport Sri Lanka thinks widely in a practical manner and is trying out a new system of traffic light based on the usual European model to solve the problem using embedded system/microprocessor based system. This project is released for the open tender to the microcontroller based design companies. And Think that you are working in one of microcontroller design based company as a Project Design Engineer. After few researches in Sri Lanka traffic lights, your company Research Department came up with followings, In the conventional traffic light controller, the duration allocated for each junction is a constant cycle time, which is clearly not an optimal solution. Using this traffic light cycle time is fixed without care the traffic flow at the time. And also practically they consider the traffic in William junction (shown in figure 1) with the convectional traffic light, and they observe when the traffic flow at the Galle road is in low condition and the traffic flow at the side road is in high condition, and the traffic light cycle still in the same fixed time.

Task 3 (P1-2, M1, M2) As a design project engineer you ask to write a proposal by your company CEO to get this project from ministry of transport. In the project proposal report you must include, 3.1 (P1-2) Study the problem of convectional traffic system. (Describe the different between the convectional traffic light system microcontroller design) and intelligent traffic light system based on a
And identify the system inputs; outputs and controllers (Give a specific reason for why you chose the particular device/technology) to solve the problem.

Task 4 (P2-1, P2-2, P2-3, D1, D2, D3) Just imagine your above proposal approved by the ministry of transport, Sri Lanka and your project starts and all the researches complete by the research department. As a design engineer you ask to develop the microcontroller based dynamic traffic light system. However your design step must be started with static traffic light systems. Design development 4.1 (P2-1) Draw a flowchart for convectional traffic light system (consider the single signal light and a specific time period) 4.2 (P2-2) Write a program to control the convectional traffic light system 4.3 (P2-3) Test the program using computer software 4.4 (D1) Change the flow chart to control the intelligent traffic light systems 4.5 (D2) Write a program to control the intelligent traffic light system 4.6 (D3) Test the program using computer simulations (Note: Students must handover the assembly program soft copy write your program in cd and attached with your document)
