Chapter IX Cooling Tower Selection

Cooling tower is a must when the condenser is a water-cooled type. Either of the compressor capacity or water flow rate can be the selection factor for choosing the accurate cooling tower. The chosen cooling tower including its details and specifications will be provided after the computations.

COOLING TOWER CAPACITY Each refrigeration system that uses water-cooled condenser needs cooling tower. Each cooling tower has its determined capacity based on the refrigeration system. The cooling tower capacity is equal to the refrigerating capacity of the selected compressor from Chapter VII. Nomenclatures:

WATER FLOW RATE The rate of flow of water running through the cooling tower is called the water flow rate which is usually expressed in terms of gallons per minute. The cooling water should have the capability of handling a certain amount of warm water coming from the condenser. This amount is determined in the following computations.

Nomenclatures:

The entering water temperature at the cooling tower is equal to the leaving water temperature at the condenser; therefore, there is a need to compute for the latter temperature. Normal temperature of sea water.

Typical temperature rise of water in a water-cooled condenser.

From this point, the nomenclature for (Tout)con is changed to Tin as the proceeding computation is now for the cooling tower. The water passing through the cooling tower is cooled by the air at its wet bulb temperature. Ideally, the leaving water temperature will be the same as the wet bulb temperature of the air. However, this is not possible. There will be some difference between the said temperatures. The temperature of water after passing through the condenser.

Wet bulb temperature at ambient condition.

Typical temperature difference between the wet bulb and the leaving water temperature.

The temperature of water after leaving the cooling tower.

Calculation of the water flow rate is presented below. The value will be obtained by substituting the required values based on the given formula.

COOLING TOWER SELECTION The cooling tower selection is based on the capacity. Through catalogs, the selected cooling towers capacity has the closest to the computed cooling capacity. The details of the said cooling tower provided on the next page.

COOLING TOWER ANALYSIS From the computation, the required capacity of cooling tower is 5.6812 tons. The rated ton of the chosen cooling tower which is 6 tons exceeds the minimum required value. However, the cooling tower should be supplied with 28.3535 GPM of water.
