FE5 Faecal Parasite Workstation

Rapid Analysis of Intestinal Parasites (0ocysts, Ova and Larvae)

Faster than manual transfer of faecal concentrates onto microscope slides Safer for lab staff as no contact with hazardous samples or reagents Improved Morphology of ova and oocysts More consistent results with fixed sample size and human error eliminated Self cleaning at the push of a button before and after samples are processed Saves money with no slides, coverslips or pipettes required.

Technique Principles
Correct analysis of intestinal parasites involves taking a faecal sample, filtering out the unwanted debris and fat cells, and then examining under a microscope for Helminth Ova, Protozoal Oocysts, and any larval stages that may be present. This process of filtration is termed concentration and results in a sample clean enough to view under a microscope, whilst still retaining any parasite lifecycle stages from the original stool sample. Once concentration has taken place, a representative portion of this concentrate needs to be microscopically examined in order to visibly identify any Ova, Oocysts or Larval stages that are present. This requires thorough mixing of the concentrate (to ensure a representative sample is taken) and then transferring a drop size portion to a microscope slide before placing a coverslip over the sample ready for examination. This procedure is time consuming, messy and adds cost by using a slide, coverslip and pipette for each sample you want to examine. The FE5 was designed to automate the above procedure as far as possible, removing any inconsistencies between users, to provide a faster, safer, cleaner method which gives improved parasite ID and easier sample viewing.

Four Simple Steps

1. Place the aspirator probe into the tube containing the faecal concentrate and add 1ml of saline. 2. Press the sample button to deliver a perfectly mixed aliquot of sample into the re-usable OSA (Optical Slide Assembly). 3. Identify the parasites. 4. Press the two purge buttons to flush out the two chambers of the OSA ready for the next sample.

It really is as easy as that! Features include:

Automatic Staining the OSA has 2 chambers and one is automatically added with stain when you press the sample button. This means you always have stained and unstained views of the same sample.

How does the FE5 work?

Firstly, the FE5 Workstation uses a simple 3 button operation to draw up samples, deliver to a re-usable microscope slide assembly, and then flush through with saline ready for the next sample. The re-usable Optical Slide Assembly (OSA) acts as the viewing chamber, and the touch of a button delivers a perfectly mixed sample into the OSA for analysis, instantly giving you both an unstained and stained sample to examine. No Mess No Fuss!

Distinct OSA area just 2 focal planes on x10 magnification, combine with easy to see edges for faster coverage of the sample. Jog function by pushing the sample button a 2nd or 3rd time you can jog a separate aliquot of the same sample into the OSA. This is equivalent to 3 microscope slide preparations (6 if you include stained slides).

FE5 preparations can be better quality than manual slide loading
The OSA has a fixed chamber volume and depth which a slide/coverslip combination does not have. Instead of being 'squashed' under a coverslip the parasites 'float' inside the chamber and are easier to see as they better maintain their morphology.

Which Faecal Concentrators should be used?

The FE5 is designed to work perfectly with our own ethyl acetate free concentrator tubes, Parasep SF. These use just Formalin and Triton X to fix and break up the samples, with a clever fat dispersion chamber removing unwanted fat cells.

Two focal planes (x10) means faster and more accurate analysis
