LAUSD Implementation March, 2012

Objectives
Understand the purpose of the transition to the CCSS

Understand how the transition to the CCSS will rollout and be implemented in LAUSD

Current California Standards: Lots to cover Not enough time

Current California Standards: Lack connections to real life / real world

Why the CCSS?

Defines what is needed for students to be college and

career ready by the end of high school

Research and evidence-based Rigorousdeep cognitive engagement and

application
Increased achievement by embedding literacy

standards into all content areas

Consistent expectations city, state, and nationwide
World-class learning outcomes for students

College and Career Ready

Master core content Develop key cognitive strategies

Take ownership for their learning and become proficient with a range of learning strategies Acquire the knowledge necessary to make a successful transition from secondary to postsecondary education

The Development
A state-led movement through the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers
Designed by a diverse group of teachers, professionals, organizations, parents, and school administrators to provide a clear and consistent framework to prepare our children for college and the workforce
Interactive Digital Library

State silos of cost, effort, expertise

Shared platform for collaboration, cost and effort efficiencies, sharing of best practices

The CCSS do provide:

An outline of the most important essential skills and

knowledge every student needs to master to succeed in college and careers

The CCSS do not provide:

A complete scope and sequence A course outline, or
All the essential skills and knowledge students could have

Overall Shifts for Instruction

ELA/Literacy
Building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction and informational texts Reading and writing grounded in evidence from text
Regular practice with complex text and the academic vocabulary embedded within

English Language Arts

Text-Dependent Questions allow students to have rich and rigorous conversations based on a common text. Complex Text prepares students for the complexity of college and career, with each grade level requiring a step of growth on the staircase. Informational Text gives students an opportunity to engage and interact with text that prepares them for the type of experiences they will encounter in college and careers.

Overall Shifts for Instruction

Mathematics
Focus: Focus deeply on what is emphasized in the standards

Coherence: Think across grades, and link to major topics within grades Rigor: Require fluency, application, and deep understanding

Mathematics
The shifts give emphasis to what matters most in the Common Core State Standards
Focus allows students to think and practice Coherence allows students to make connections among

mathematical ideas

Rigor allows students to show fluency, application, and a deep

understanding of mathematics

Common Core State Standards for Mathematics Standards for Mathematical Practice
1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. 4. Model with mathematics. 5. Use appropriate tools strategically. 6. Attend to precision.

7. Look for and make use of structure. 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
