THE

EAGLE EXTRA
March 01, 2012
Dear Parents, Most of you know that our varsity girls basketball team played in the State championship game this past Saturday. Although we were defeated, we are extremely proud of our players and our coach. Their effort and attitude before, during and after this game were admirable and led numerous people, many who were at the game in support of other teams, to comment about our school in a very positive way. Even though we did not win the game, we are definitely winners. Our girls formed a special bond and learned skills that will contribute to success and happiness in life. Our team and our coach brought honor and respect to our school and contributed to our schools reputation in a manner we will enjoy long after anyone remembers the particulars of this game. As stated by several Booster Club Board members in reference to our girls basketball players and coach, You are all champions to us. Go Eagles!!! Enrollment contracts for 2012-2013 were mailed to all families approximately two weeks ago. If you did not receive this information, please contact the school office. Your continued support of Richard Winn Academy (RWA) is greatly appreciated and we look forward to serving your family next year. Please remember that a tuition discount is offered to families who return their contracts by March 30, 2012 and elect to pay annually or quarterly. Also, prompt return of contracts, regardless of the payment option chosen, allows us to plan for next school year in a timely and quality manner. We appreciate those of you who have already returned contracts or let us know that we can expect to receive yours soon. We hosted two admissions open house events in February and have a third one planned for Thursday, March 8 at 6:00 P. M. If you are aware of a new family who will appreciate RWAs philosophy and might be interested in attending RWA next year, please contact Mrs. Lanna McMeekin or the school office. We will extend a personal invitation. At the Board of Directors meeting held on February 13, the Board adopted the budget for the 2012-2013 school year. Due to support from patrons and various school stakeholders, greater enrollment than anticipated for 2011-2012, and careful monitoring of spending, tuition was not increased. Also, approval was given to add several programs for our students. Our plans include hiring personnel so that students beyond fourth grade have opportunities to enjoy either music or art. We plan to involve eighth and/or ninth graders in specialized training to help them prepare for the rigors of high school. Pending enrollment, we hope to divide the current sixth grade group of students into two groups for seventh grade to allow these students to receive additional support based on academic strengths and needs. Additionally, the upper school schedule for students in grades seven through 12 will be revised to allow for six academic periods and one short enrichment and/or academic support period each day (e. g. tutoring, SAT preparation, enrichment classes, etc.). (Note: To accommodate scheduling adjustments, the school day for all students will

begin approximately 10-15 minutes earlier next year.) Again, pending enrollment, we hope to divide our current second graders into two classes for grade three and to maintain two classes for our third graders moving to fourth grade. Changes being suggested for next year are for the purpose of continually improving and enriching student achievement and for expanding the services offered to our students. Changes are based on input from all school stakeholders, the Board of Directors Master Plan and recommendations received last year as a result of the accreditation review by The South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA). Should you have questions, please contact Mrs. Bellomy or me. The second semester of the school year is going quickly and continues to be busy! Please check carefully your childs third grading period report card and request a conference if you have questions about your childs progress. Report cards will be sent home on Wednesday, March 14. Help us reinforce with students that their attitudes and efforts matter for the remainder of the school year. Your support makes a positive difference for your child and our school and we appreciate your involvement. Sincerely, Nancy Coleman P. S. Dont forget to thank our 2011-2012 Board members for making the decision to maintain our current tuition rate in appreciation of the many families that continue to support RWA during difficult economic times: Paul Swearingen, Chair; Wayne Steele, Vice Chair; Palmer Nicholson, Secrey in the Valley at Clemson Univertary; John Lewis, Treasurer; Jay Branham, William Frick, sity Suzanne Hunter, and Amy Tate. Student Government Association (SGA) Conference Student Government officers, representatives and sponsors will attend the annual High School Student Government Spring Convention sponsored by SCISA on March 5-6 at Myrtle Beach. The conference provides students with opportunities to develop leadership skills and to meet and network with other youth leaders from various independent schools located across South Carolina. Our representatives include Alex Maass, President; Rebekah Phillips, Vice President; Carol Anne Elliott, Secretary; Tyler Lewis, Treasurer; Blake Little, Historian; Nic Mills and Susannah Nunamaker, 12th Grade Class Representatives; Carson Justice and Levi Davis, 10th Grade Class Representatives; and Martin Hacker-Mullen, 9th Grade Class Representative. Sponsors and chaperones include Ms. Callie Ladd, Coach Haltiwanger, Coach Inman and Mrs. Kerri Martin. Junior Beta Club Induction On Wednesday, March 7, at 12:00 p.m., the 7th Grade Junior Beta Club Induction Ceremony will be held in the library. Students who have completed the first semester of the seventh grade at RWA may become members of the Junior Beta Club if they have achieved an average of at least 90 with no grade lower than a B (85). We are proud to announce that the following students have been invited to join: Alyssa Atkerson, Mitchell Gibbons, Hunter Hartley, Shelley Priddy, Cali Swearingen, Hunter Tate, Bailey Taylor, Madison Wade and Grace Wilder. Stanford Achievement Test (SAT) and the Otis Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT) All students in grades two through seven will take the SAT and the OLSAT during the week of March 19-23. The SAT is required by SCISA and is designed to measure what our students have learned in reading, math, language arts, science and social studies. The OLSAT is designed to measure abstract thinking and reasoning and to indicate how well a student should be able to perform in school based on his/ her verbal and nonverbal cognitive abilities. OLSAT will be administered the first day and a short portion of the SAT will be administered each day. Please be sure your child attends school on time, well-fed, and well-rested. Encourage your child to do his/her personal best on the test each day. Test results are one factor administrators consider when assigning students to classes at grade levels where more than one class exists and/or more than one level of a course is taught. Individual student results will be shared with parents when score reports are returned to the school. VOLUNTEERS are needed to monitor classes and assist teachers during testing. If you are available one or more mornings during the week of March 19-23, please contact Mrs. Missy Taylor, SAT and OLSAT Testing Coordinator. Math Class Takes Field Trip On Friday, March 23 Mrs. Gibbons college preparatory Algebra III students will attend Eureka, a Math Play at the Township Theater in Columbia. The play addresses how math relates to real life and highlights critical skills all students need to master.
