DRUG STUDY
Indication > Cardiac arrest, anaphylactic reaction, bronchospasm, open-angle glaucoma Contraindication > Cardiac arrhythmias Side Effects > Tachycardia, HTC, vasoconstriction, nervousness, anxiety, trembling, decrease renal blood flow Nursing Responsibilities > Assess sulphite sensitivity > Assess cardiopulmonary function > Continuously monitor ECG, BP and pulse until desired effect achieved > Monitor VS every 2-5 minutes until stabilized, once stable, monitor BP every 1530 mins. > Note any symptoms of shock (cyanosis, cold clammy skin, and loss of consciousness) > Must not be added to any existing IV solution > Check for any history of glaucoma before ophthalmic administration may precipitate acute crisis > Obtain VS and ECG monitoring > Monitor CV status during IV therapy

ATROPINE SULFATE Anti-cholinergic

> Reduces secretions and intestinal motility, and is used in the treatment of smooth muscle spasm, preanesthetic to control salivation and bronchial secretions > Restore cardiac rate and atrial pressure during anesthesia when vagal stimulation > Antidote for toxicity in cholinergic drugs (pilocarpine) > life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias (ventricular fibrillation, unstable ventricular tachycardia)

> infants less than 3 mos. of age, adhesions between the iris and the lens, geriatric patients and others where underdiagnosed glaucoma or excessive pressure in the eye present,

> Blurred vision, stinging, increased IOP, contact dermatitis, irritation, photophobia, eczematoid dermatitis, conjunctivitis and edema

CORDARONE (AMIODARONE HCl) Class III Anti-arrhythmic

> cardiogenic shock, marked sinus bradycardia due to severe sinus node dysfunction, 2nd or 3rd degree AV block, lactation

> lung edema, cough and progressive dyspnea, worsening of arrhythmias, paroxysmal ventricular tachycardia, symptomatic

> Correct K or Mg deficiencies before initiation of therapy > Must be given with meals > Note if patient is taking any other anti-arrhythmic drugs

NICARDIPINE > hypertensive emergencies Calcium Channel Blocker or urgencies, peri-op and post-op HTN, hypertensive states of NPO patients

> MI, pts who do not have complete hemostasis following intracranial hemorrhage, increased ICP during acute phase of a stroke > Geriatric, lactation

bradycardia, sinus arrest, SA node dysfunction, fatigue, ataxia, insomnia, headache, nausea and vomiting, papilledema, eye discomfort, photophobia, blurred vision > peripheral edema, headache, tachycardia, palpitations, localized thrombophlebitis and hypotension

> Assess quality of respiration and breath sounds; note cardiac status, ECG and CV findings > Assess vision before therapy > Monitor VS regularly > Note CHF and if beta blockers prescribed, monitor closely > Monitor ECG, liver and renal function tests > Monitor closely pts BP and pulse rate > Monitor BP regularly > Give initial dose at bedtime and daily dose I the morning > Assess prostate gland, PSA level and BPH score > Carefully observe initial dosing to prevent severe hypotension > Administer 1h prior to mealtime > Assess for stomach pain, its frequency and characteristics > Advise to avoid use of alcohol, aspirin-containing and caffeine-containing products > Assess abdomen for bowel sounds > Advise to avoid alcohol and any other CNS depressants > Monitor for symptoms of extrapyramidal syndrome

HYTRIN (TERAZOSIN HCl) Alpha-1- adrenergic blocking drug, anti-hypertensive

> hypertension, symptoms of BPH

> dizziness, nasal congestion, drowsiness, nausea peripheral edema, asthenia, postural hypotension, anxiety

ZANTAC (RANITIDNE) Anti-histamine, H-2 receptor blocker

> short-term and maintenance treatment of duodenal ulcer, ZollingerEllison syndrome and systemic mastocytosis, gastric ulcers, GERD, erosive esophagitis > nausea and vomiting due to GI disorders after surgery and cancer chemotherapy, GI motility disorders, GERD, nonulcer dyspepsia, gastric ulcer

> Liver cirrhosis, impaired renal or hepatic function

> Nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, dizziness, headache, malaise, insomnia, fatigue, bradycardia or tachycardia, vasculitis, thrombocytopenia, hepatotoxicity, athralgia > restlessness, drowsiness, headache, diarrhea, extrapyramidal syndrome, galactorrhea, bowel disturbancrs, HTN, hypotension, bradycardia, amenorrhea
