Performance notes
The sound of Synergy should be intense throughout. This is particularly important at lower dynamic
levels, where the effect should be of an intense sound veiled or muted, as if heard from a distance.
This will be achieved primarily through a rich, strong tone at all dynamic levels.
Throughout the score hairpins without an indicated final or goal dynamic indicate expressive rises
and falls relative to the prevailing dynamic. Significant and structural changes of dynamic are usually
indicated with crescendo and diminuendo .
Piano pedalling should aid the production of an indistinct sound, where appropriate, but not to the
extent of unpleasant blurring. Regular half-pedalling will achieve the desired effect. The una corda
pedal is used to create the intended veiled but intense sound, but not a reduction in the marked
dynamic. It will therefore be necessary to compensate finger weight accordingly: for example, at the
opening finger weight should be more like mezzo-forte, though the resultant sound will be piano.
Another aspect of the pieces intensity is its near-constant dynamism, even when the material appears
relatively static. This specifically concerns glissandi (piano) and portamenti (violin and cello) in that
their rate of pitch change should be constant - that is, pitch motion should cover the entirity of the
notated glissando or portamento line.
All pizzicati are performed laissez vibre.
