Program 3617 Due to the changes in the Nanotechnology program, some of you may find the course enrolment

scenario for semester 1 2012 a little confusing. The following has been put together to simplify the enrolment process. In the main it provides information for students who have passed all of the courses for the year in which they are presently studying and are looking to enrol in the next year. If you are not in this situation, please contact the course coordinator (see end of information).

Best wishes,

Marcus Enrolment recommendations for students leaving 1 st year and entering 2nd year: The university handbook entry for 2012 is intended for students entering first year in 2012. For this reason, the recommended path is not exactly that of students who entered in 2011 or previous years. Students who have completed first year with passes in all subjects must take the following courses in S1 2012: NANO2002 Nanotechnology 2 [3 UOC] CHEM2041 Analytical Chemistry: Essential Methods [6 UOC] MATS2003 Materials Characterisation [6 UOC] PHYS2110 Quantum Physics and Laboratory [6 UOC] 3 UOC Elective: Ideally general education but can be another 2nd year 3 UOC science course. For general education courses follow the following link: http://www.handbook.unsw.edu.au/vbook2012/brCoursesByAtoZ.jsp?StudyLevel=Undergra duate&descr=G Alternatively choose a 3 UOC course from any other Faculty aside from Science.

Enrolment recommendations for students leaving 2 nd year and entering 3rd year: The university handbook entry for 2012 is intended for students entering first year in 2012. For this reason, the recommended path is not exactly that of students who entered in 2010 or previous years. Students who have completed second year with passes in all subjects must take the following courses in S1 2012: NANO3101 Advanced Nanomaterials [6 UOC] NANO3410 Chemistry of Surfaces [3 UOC] CHEM3011 Physical Chemistry: Materials, Structure and Function [6 UOC] BABS3121 Molecular Biology of Nucleic Acids [6 UOC] PHYS3080 Solid State Physics [3 UOC]

Enrolment recommendations for students leaving 3 rd year and entering 4th year: Students entering their Honours year will be manually enrolled in NANO4004 (2 x 18 UOC in each semester) by the course coordinator in early 2012. Students should enrol in MATS1464 Professional Communication and Presentation, which is run by the School of Materials Science and Engineering and comprises the presentation aspect of their Honours research. Another 9 UOC of electives is required to bring you 4th year to 48 UOC. These should be chosen from the list of electives in the University handbook 2011* for program 3617 (NB: not 2012 version) and can be 3 UOC in semester 1 and 6 UOC in semester 2 (24 UOC in each semester) or students can overload in semester 1 (27 UOC) to ease their Honours thesis write up in semester 2 (21 UOC). *Link to 2011 Program: http://www.handbook.unsw.edu.au/undergraduate/programs/2011/3617.html Link to 2012 Program: http://www.handbook.unsw.edu.au/undergraduate/programs/2012/3617.html

Other students: Students who have failed courses, or have not completed one of the academic years and are confused as to what courses they should enrol in, should contact A/Prof. Marcus Cole on m.cole@unsw.edu.au.
