Final Examination Review Problems

Fall, 2011

You should attempt the problems below before coming to class for the lab 11/review session (November 14 November 19). In fact, your instructor may ask you to solve the problems on the board during the review session. There is no substitute for your diligence and participation in this process. If you do nothing but watch someone else solve the problems, you will not learn much from the review. If you at least seriously attempt the problems, you will learn something. The best way to study is to review all labs and quizzes. Try to solve the problems below under exam conditions. If you cannot solve all the problems without help, you are not ready for the final. A sheet of fundamental equations will be provided at the final examination. As you know, one problem on the final examination concerns graphical analysis of data. Here are some equations for you to practice putting into the proper form to make a straight-line graph. For each equation, show how to rewrite the equation to make a straight-line graph of some function of y versus some function of x. Identify the slope and the vertical intercept. EXAMPLE: y2 - a = bx(1/2); Rewrite as y2 = a + bx(1/2). Plot y2 on the vertical axis and x(1/2) on the horizontal axis. The slope is then b and the vertical intercept is a. Review the introduction in the PHYS 1101 manual for help. TRY THESE: (1) y = [c + dx(1/3)]2; (2) y = ae(kx) (3) y= kxn (determine k and n), (4) (y2 + b)(1/2) = ax, and y = a[1 bx(3/4)]

1. A student devised an interesting experiment to measure the repulsive s between two bar magnets. She used an incline with a very low n n coefficient of friction, placed one magnet at the bottom of the incline, s and let the other magnet find its equilibrium position with respect to the fixed bottom magnet. The setup is shown above. She varied the angle , measured the separation distance x between the two north poles of the magnets, and obtained the following data. sin x (cm) 0.05 14.10 0.10 9.80 0.15 8.20 0.20 7.00 0.25 6.40 0.30 5.60

(a) Show that the equation relating the magnetic force kxn to the component of the moveable magnets component of weight along the incline is mg sin = kxn, where m = 0.05 kg is the mass of each magnet, k is a constant, and g = 9.8 m/s2 is the acceleration due to gravity. (b) Plot a straight-line graph of the appropriate variables, and from the slope and intercept of the graph, determine values for n and k. Be sure to include units, if applicable. Recall that log (ab) = log a + log b and log (xn) = n log x. 2. A student set up the magnetic optical D CAT L S bench as shown. The locations of the component holders for the crossed arrow LS target (CAT), and lens (L), are as follows, respectively: 25.8 cm, 42.6 cm. Bench (side view) The offsets for the CAT and the S are 3.0 0.0 cm 100.0 cm mm, and the offset for L is 6.0 mm. The = component holder image formed on the screen is twice the size of the object. (a) Calculate the position of the component holder of the screen. (b) Calculate the focal length of the lens. (c) Is the image inverted or upright?

3. The circuit below has a voltmeter and an ammeter connected as shown. What does each meter register? Use R1 = 7.0 ohms, R2 = 2.0 ohms, R3 = 5.0 ohms, R4 = 8.0 ohms, and E = 10.0 volts. E is equivalent to the power supply you used.

4. In the experiment to study polarization, the angle between the transmission axes of two polarizers is . Light from the incandescent light source passes through both polarizers. Light emerging from the first polarizer and entering the second polarizer has an intensity of 46.0 lux as measured by the photometer. Light emerging from the second polarizer has an intensity of 20.0 lux. Calculate the value of the angle . 5. In a computer-based experiment to study diffraction and interference, the width of the central diffraction peak is 10.7 mm. The wavelength of the laser is 633 nm (1 nm = 10-9 m) and the distance from the screen containing the slits to the screen is 30.0 cm. Find the slit width. If five interference fringes fit within the central diffraction peak, what is the slit separation?
