IMPROVED MEYER LEMON

(Citrus limon X Citrus sinensis)

Of all citrus trees, the Improved Meyer Lemon is one of the hardiest and it is one of the most productive, for its size. It is not a true lemon though. In fact, the mature fruit of the Meyer looks more like a large orange with a small nipple. It makes a delicious lemon substitute nonetheless. The Meyer flesh is a light orange-yellow color, with juice sweeter than that of most lemons. And best of all, it is a small compact tree which can grow well in most U. S. climates. Our Improved Meyer Lemon makes a striking addition to the patio in the summer. When it is time to move the plant indoors, the sweet perfume-scented blooms, followed by ornamental fruit, brighten just about any cold spell. Introduced to the United States (from China) in the early twentieth century, it was discovered by Frank N. Meyer, who was on assignment from the USDA as an agricultural explorer. The University of California developed the Improved Meyer Lemon as a virus-free tree.

LEMONS
PONDEROSA LEMON (Citrus pyriformis)
The Ponderosa is the largest lemon that we know of - as big as two pounds - with enough juice for at least two pies. Although it fruits early and often, the Ponderosa is primarily grown as an ornamental. The large bumpy fruit holds extremely well on the tree, even on smaller specimens. Our grafted versions grow to about half the size of a true lemon tree, with large citrus-scented leaves and largerthan-average citrus blossoms. **Container in photo not included. GRAPEFRUIT RIO RED GRAPEFRUIT (Citrus paradisi)

You have undoubtedly heard of the Rio Red Grapefruits close relatives the Ruby Red and Star Ruby. All are fine selections with a great number of similarities. But the Rio Red is taking the lead in popularity and use. A relatively new variety, the Rio Red was introduced in 1984. It is more vigorous and hardier than the Star Ruby and the fruit is sweeter than the Ruby Red - with few to no seeds. Our Rio Red Grapefruit have handsome well-established trunks and are of fruiting age. Because these are such dynamic growers, we recommend planting them directly into the ground. However, if you live in an area that commonly has freezing temperatures; a ten-to-fifteen gallon pot will also work well. But the tree must be moved indoors (or to a greenhouse) during the winter.

LIMES

THORNLESS KEY LIME (Citrus aurantifolia)

Without a doubt, the Key Lime is the most popular lime in North America. It is prized by chefs from just about every ethnic group. Whether used in a drink, sauce, marinade, or dessert, the brisk flavor and aroma of the Key Lime is unmistakable. Although not as cold hardy as some citrus, the Key Lime can be successfully container-grown on a sunny porch. It does not tolerate frost and must be moved indoors during cold weather. But, as some fruit is borne year-round, we consider this a good thing! The Key Lime is known by many names, including Mexican, West Indian and Bartender Lime. Believed to be a native fruit of southeastern Asia, limes have been cultivated for thousands of years. More recently, Columbus is said to have obtained lime seeds (among other fruit varieties) during a stop at the Canary Islands in 1493, his second voyage to the Western Hemisphere. According to several historical accounts, Columbus planted lime groves on the Island of Hispaniola, which were later gathered by Spanish conquistadors, and planted in St. Augustine, Florida. The most familiar lore regarding limes is their use in curing scurvy during the last part of the eighteenth century. British sailors (known even today as Limeys) carried limes and other citrus fruit on long voyages to cure and prevent the debilitating symptoms of the disease. Although they did not know it back then, the chemical that actually cured the disease was ascorbic acid, or vitamin C. It is also no secret citrus is an excellent source of vitamin C. Did You Know? Unlike many grapefruit varieties, the Rio Red does not need extended periods of high heat to develop deep internal color. Overall, though, the tree will grow best where there is plenty of summer warmth.

KAFFIR LIME (Citrus hystrix)

It is among the most unusual cultivated citrus. And the leaves, not the fruit, are used extensively in Asian cooking particularly in Thai cuisine. The smooth aromatic foliage of the Kaffir Lime is high in volatile oils, which gives it a mysterious and distinctive flavor. Although it is sometimes substituted with lemongrass or the juice of lemons or limes, the true flavor of fresh Kaffir Lime leaves cannot be duplicated. The flesh and rind from the green bumpy fruit can also be used in cooking. But start with very little, as the juice is quite sour with a bitter aftertaste! We like to leave the fruit on the tree for its ornamental value. Although the Kaffir Lime was first cultivated centuries ago, the increased demand for it in North America is relatively recent. The Kaffir Lime is also known as Kieffer and Kuffre.

CARA CARA PINK NAVEL (Citrus sinensis)

The Cara Cara Pink Navel is one of the more exotic varieties in our offering. As an offspring of the Washington and Brazilian Bahia Navels, this variety has some very interesting traits. For starters, the medium-sized fruit is deep orange, with dark-pink flesh (similar in color to the Rio Red Grapefruit). It is usually seedless. And the juice is very sweet, with a low acid content. The tree is small-to-medium (compared to other orange varieties) with foliage that is occasionally variegated. The Cara Cara is relatively new to the United States, having been introduced into Florida in the mid1980s. It originated as a limb sport, selected from a navel tree at the Hacienda de Cara Cara in Valencia, Venezuela.

Did You Know? Individual limbs of the Cara Cara Navel can
sometimes bear normal-colored fruit. This is a naturally occurring process. R86 (Large Bare Root) $50.00 R11 (Med. EVERHARD NAVEL ORANGE (Citrus Sinensis)

Because it is the most predictable and reliably colored blood orange, the dwarf Moro Blood Orange is the most popular commercial and home garden dwarf variety in the country. The Moro Blood Orange typically features two shades of red - dark and darker. By the time the fruit matures, the flesh is deep red. As it stays on the tree, it darkens to a deep purple hue. Regardless of color, which can vary, the dwarf Moro Blood Orange consistently offers a rich and distinctive flavor at peak maturity. R89 (Large Bare Root) $50.00 C89 (Containerized) $42.50 CLICK HERE TO ORDER CLCIK HERE TO ORDER This may be one of the best oranges for the home gardener. For starters, the Everhard Navel is more compact than the average navel orange tree. And fruit crops are generally heavy. A bud-sport from the old line Washington Navel, the Everhard was discovered and cultivated by the grandfather of Clay Everhard, a long-time citrus grower (and good friend of ours) in the Texas Rio Grande Valley. In some seasons, the navel is not so apparent. But, comparative testing by Texas A&M University proved that the Everhard had more consistent (fruit) bearing levels and higher resistance to post-harvest decay than several other navel varieties. The Everhard Navel is so reliable, in fact, that the commercial citrus industry south of New Orleans purchased thousands of them to replace other navel varieties lost in a hurricane. Did You Know? Oranges are represented by three major species: common oranges, navel oranges and blood oranges. R29 (Large Bare Root) $40 CLICK HERE TO ORDER C29 (Containerized) $42.50 CLICK HERE TO ORDER

Did You Know? The red color of the Blood Orange flesh is brought about by anthocyanin pigments, which also cause the same red coloration in other fruits and vegetables. These are different than lycopene pigments found in pink grapefruit.

KUMQUAT MEIWA
(Fortunella margarita X Fortunella japonica) The small size, abundance of fruit and compact growing habit of the Meiwa Kumquat tree make it an outstanding fruiting ornamental perfect for container growing. And since they can withstand temperatures below 20 F, kumquats are easily grown in areas that are too cold for most varieties of citrus. Although kumquats closely resemble citrus (and the fruit is often sold as such), they are actually species of Fortunella.

KUMQUAT NAGAMI

(Fortunella margarita)

The Nagami Kumquat may be one of the best Citrus varieties for container growing. It is widely considered a remarkable ornamental because of its symmetrical leaves and brightly colored fruit. But it also has extraordinary cold tolerance. The Nagamis oval-shaped fruit is usually eaten whole, including the sweet fleshy rind. This is the most popular commercially cultivated Kumquat in Florida. It is also grown commercially throughout China and Japan. Did You Know? The word Kumquat comes from the Cantonese word kin ku, meaning golden orange.

kumquats are generally eaten whole rind and all. R03 (Med. Bare Root) $40 C03 (Containerized) $42.50 CLICK HERE TO ORDER CLICK HERE TO ORDER R122 (Med. Bare Root) $40 C122 (Containerized) $58 CLICK HERE TO ORDER CLICK HERE TO ORDER

MANDARINS SATSUMA MANDARIN Citrus unshiu)

If ever there is a contest for the best overall Mandarin Orange, the Satsuma will get our vote. Not only is it seedless, the Satsuma is very easy to peel (hence the nicknames zipper skin and kid-glove) and it stores well. As for flavor, the Satsuma is quite sweet. And its deep orange-colored flesh makes it a feast for the eyes as well. Of course, we also like it because it makes a great container plant, even in cold areas. The Satsuma typically matures in time to begin harvesting by early autumn. Legend has it that the Satsuma was brought from China to Japan almost 500 years ago. It was later named for a province in southern Kyushu, Japan. SATSUMA OWARI The most common Satsuma in the US, the Owari fruit has a very loose rind and typically matures between October-December. Owari leaves are oblate and the tree canopy has a pronounced drooping habit. R12 (Large Bare Root) $40.00 C12 (Containerized) $42.50 CLICK HERE TO ORDER CLICK HERE TO ORDER

SATSUMA MIHO A recent introduction to the US, the Miho fruit has a smooth, thin and leathery rind and generally ripens between October-November. Miho leaves are elliptic and the tree has a more upright branching habit.

CALAMONDIN ORANGE (Citrus mitis)

Because of its beauty and ease of maintenance, the Calamondin is one of our personal favorites. It is also handsomely compact, which makes it an excellent indoor-outdoor specimen. We like to keep our Calamondins on the patio and outdoor balcony until summer has mostly faded. Then we bring them indoors, so that the small white blooms infuse the air with their heavenly aroma. Then, about the time the holiday season rolls around, handfuls of small green fruit turn to brilliant orange. And Calamondin fruit holds very well on the tree, making this variety a long-lasting ornamental. The juicy acidic fruit is no larger than a half-dollar and is best used as a lemon substitute on fish and chicken. A kumquat hybrid, the Calamondin originated in China.

Texas Everbearing Fig #R38 (med.) $36.50

When we researched figs, we looked for a variety that vigorously produces a goodtasting fruit crop and is easy to grow in most parts of the country. Although there are several good varieties of figs, the Texas Everbearing Fig was our winner, hands down. Fig trees make an excellent landscape specimen, with their silvery bark and large lobed leaves. The Texas Everbearing Fig produces a large crop of succulent brownish-purple fruit, with deep burgundy pulp. And, because the first crop generally comes in June, this cold-tolerant, self-fertile variety can produce fruit most anywhere. Our Texas Everbearing Fig plants are of fruiting age, shipped in two-gallon containers. Did You Know? The first crop of the season is called the "breba crop". It is produced on growth from the previous season. Subsequent (main) crops, produce smaller fruit on the current season's wood. R38 (Large Bare Root) $39.00 R98 (Med. Figs grow best in full sun which is western or southern sun exposure. Containerized figs prefer the same sun exposure, but must be watered more often. It must have a well draining soil [preferably a mix containing sand.] Water frequently and keep the soil evenly moist. Use a fertilizer that is time released and is high in nitrogen.
Generally, Figs can tolerate winters that are not extreme if well-mulched and adequately covered. If containerized, move the plant to a sheltered area.

Its upright bushy growing habit make it an excellent shrub border (in warmer climates) and can reach heights of 6 to 8 feet. TRANSPLANTING
Regardless of how (or when) you transplant or repot, plants Always go through an adjustment period. Some plants rebound more quickly than others. Think of it as a person or family moving into a new home. The new home may better fit their size and comfort requirements, but they still must become familiar with their new surroundings before life can get back to normal. Plants are much the same way. In most cases, transplanting or repotting will only slow plant growth for a brief period. But there are a few exceptions. For example, some plants are more prone to heavy leaf loss. Dont become overly concerned about this. In the proper conditions, new growth should begin to appear soon. For more on transplanting, see the How to in the Gardening101 section of our website.

A GUIDE TO USING OUR CATALOGUE Finding A Plant Variety

Most people use common names in reference to plants, including us. Thats why weve categorized our trees by their common group, such as lemons, limes and mandarins. This makes for a much easier search. If you cannot find a particular variety in this catalogue, we recommend visiting our website at www.dwarfcitrus.com for our latest inventory, e-mail us at sales@acornsprings.com or call us at 1-888-442-2676.

Botanical Names
Believe it or not, a plant can have several trade names. For example, our Key Lime is also known as the Mexican, West Indian and Bartender. But the standard lime by any other name is still a Citrus aurantifolia. By the way, the X in a botanical name means that one or more plants were crossbred! If you are looking for a particular variety, review the botanical name to ensure proper selection.

A Word About Hardiness Zones . . .

Unlike many mail-order nurseries, we do not list a hardiness rating with our plants. Our reasoning behind this is that our trees, potted, will thrive anywhere in the country with the proper care and protection. Of course, warmer climates improve your chances for a larger crop of fruit. But, as our cold-climate customers will attest to, a citrus tree can be grown just about anywhere. With that in mind, we do offer a link to the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map through the Gardening 101 section of our web site. We suggest that you use it as a guide for plants that will remain outdoors, year-round. If youve never used the map, our web page also contains information on how it was devised and how to read it. If your citrus tree will be grown (in the ground) north of USDA Zone 7, we strongly suggest that you check out our winterizing articles at ww.dwarfcitrus.com (in the Gardening 101/Citrus 101 section).

TREE SIZE
Our Large trees are generally between 34-40 inches tall, with slightly less than half -to- one inch trunk caliper (diameter). Our Medium trees range from 18-30 inches in height, with trunks that are slightly less than one-half inch. Our Small trees (or seedlings) are usually 6-12 inches tall. We do not measure caliper on this size.

BEFORE YOUR TREE ARRIVES . . .

With the exception of our Containerized Trees, all trees and plants are shipped bare-rooted. Prior to shipping, we dip the roots of every tree in an organic root-stimulant/anti-transpirant and bag them in peat moss. Be prepared to pot trees shortly after receipt, to reduce transplant shock. For our large trees, we recommend an 8 to 13-gallon pot. Our small and medium trees can be planted in a one to five-gallon pot .

ABOUT OUR TREES ROOTSTOCK & GRAFTING

Grafting is the process of placing a particular variety onto the trunk of another variety for the purpose of a more desirable tree. Sometimes trees are grafted to achieve a certain shape. Other times grafting is done to produce a quick-to-fruit tree. All of our large sized citrus is grafted, as well as most of our medium varieties. Our small sized trees are generally rooted cuttings or have been planted from seed. In accordance with Kosher Law, our Etrog Trees (Citrus medica) are not grafted.

**Citrus grows best in a sand-bark mix. You can make your own, or use a ready made Cactus or Orchid mix (available at your local garden center). Unless we specify otherwise, a general potting mix is adequate for our herbs and other plants. Transplanting information is also available in the Gardening 101 section of our web site. We include detailed growing instructions with every order.
If you have any questions regarding the shipment of your order, please do not hesitate to contact by toll free telephone (888) 4422676, or via e-mail sales@acornsprings.com .

ABOUT US
Does growing an orange tree require a degree in botany, along with a tract of land on the Florida coast? Most definitely not! At Dwarf Citrus, our focus is rare and unusual plants that can be grown virtually anywhere. And the plants we offer are easily grown by just about anyone. We also offer a few extras to make your gardening effort more rewarding. Our story is simple. We are plant enthusiasts. We enjoy common trees, shrubs and flowers since they generally define an area of the country. We are also fond of growing the unusual plants that we see in books, magazines, movies and on television but never find at the local nursery. So we grew our own. You can too! Dwarf Citrus is a family owned and operated 100-acre plant and tree farm nestled in the Piney Woods of Northeast Texas. Honestly, we have a nice growing environment for most plants. But even the long-time locals had never heard of growing lemons or limes, until they saw our crop. Were pretty sure those north of us have the same sentiments. Thats why weve selected many plants that can grow, bloom and fruit, with ease, in a shorter season. Within these pages, youll find in-depth descriptions of most everything we sell. Of course, we are always adding new, unusual products, which are available at www.dwarfcitrus.com. While youre there, be sure and check out our Gardening 101 section. Its full of information on the easiest, most practical ways to get the most from your plants. If your questions or comments are more specific, we invite you to drop us an e-mail through our website, or call us.

In all likelihood, this is a result of water. When petals drop, it's almost always because the plant became waterlogged and was never able to catch up in the "cycle". This usually follows a period when the roots became too dry. Yellow or light green leaves further indicate an excess of water. When watering citrus, water deeply. A 5-10 gallon pot in full sun (with average draining soil) usually requires you to water 2-3 times per week. The soil should be mostly dry, before you water again. Keeping a consistent watering schedule is also extremely important. For information see: Proper Watering article in the Gardening101 section of our website.

Citrus Tip Blossom and Fruit Drop

While it is normal for some blooms and fruit to drop before maturity, a well-cared-for citrus tree should not be fruitless when all is said and done. We periodically receive calls about blossom and fruit drop. And while each case is unique, our own experience leads us back to a few probable causes.
