Basic Lesson Plan: Earthly Adventures Name: Rachael Meyer and Gwen Price Topic/Content Area: Earth Materials

Grade Level: 02 Objectives: The student will be able to identify the differences between the earth materials and classify the materials into their groups by size, shape, texture and color. I Can Statement: I can be able to tell the difference between rocks, soil, water, and sand. Be able to put them into the right groups by the way that they look and feel. HCPS III Standard: Stand 8: Physical, Earth and Space sciences: Earth and Space Science: Understand the Earth and its processes, the solar system and the universe and its contents. HCPSIII Benchmark: SC.2.8.1; identify different Earth materials and classify them by their physical properties. Concept Map/List: Earth Materials: 1. Rocks: a. Different Colors i. Materials: Rocks Water Sand Soil Plastic Cups (Paper Cups) Napkins Trays Paper (like the table below but with more space for each box.) In words, tell me what you Draw a picture of what see. you see. Procedure: 1. Set up trays with materials (Rocks, Cup of sand, Cup of water and a cup of soil.) 2. Print out the chart that is provided in the materials section. Hand out on sheet per student. 3. Have the students clear their desk of all their belongings and have them put it away neatly before you pass out the materials for the project. 4. Assign them to groups of 4-5 students and have them gather into the groups around their tables and pass out paper. Have them write their names on the piece of paper in the right hand corner. 5. Give trays (1 tray) per table/ group tell them to not touch the trays before they are told to. 6. Explain to them what their task is to do in the group project and explain to them what needs to be on their charts. Explain to them the difference between solid and liquid materials. a. Solid Does not change shape b. Liquid Takes the shape of the container

c. Have them write in words what they see and feel d. Have them draw their objet and have them color their drawings, after their all done filling out the chart. e. You need to observe what you see and you may touch the materials (objects) and write in words what you see and feel in the first column. (Explain to them the difference between a row, and column.) 7. Have the students put all objects (materials) back on the tray, then go around and pick up the trays and put it back. 8. Have them clean up the tables after they are done coloring and drawing their pictures. (This should take them 20 min.) 9. Have the students turn in their papers after they are completely done. (This may take some time.) 10. After they are done cleaning up and sitting down at their desks have them cut out their charts that they have completed. 11. Once they are finished cutting out their charts you can tell them to play a matching game with one another to help them remember and teach each other what types of rocks they saw and what they learned about that material. 12. After they are done cutting up their papers, tell them to clean up their mess and throw away their rubbish. 13. Also have them put away their scissors and make sure that there is no horse playing in the classroom. 14. Make sure that all the students are completely finished and all the desks are clean. Then continue on with the day. Assessment / Evaluation: Have the students play a few rounds of bingo. Instructions: 1. Have them write the words in random order, 1 for each box 2. Rocks, Sand, Water and Soil, colors, rough, smooth, cold, solid, liquid, Dry, Wet. (Use the chart below w/ more space.)

3. Hand out markers for bingo; plastic clear markers or rocks form lesson. 4. Say the definitions of the words and they have to put down a marker on the correct word. 5. If they get BINGO they have to say the definition of the word and come up to get a prize of their choice. (Stickers, Pencils, Erasers) 6. Clean up area after theyre done with BINGO. The chart on the next page is an example of what our bingo game should look like.
