TEMPO GIUSTO
// for oboe, bass flute and bassoon

(2006, rev. 2012)

Duration

Tongue vibrato. As if playing staccato but without

articulation (in oboe and bassoon, without touching the
reed)

7 min.

Multiphonics
For the oboe, all multiphonics have been taken from Techniques of Oboe Playing, by Peter Veale. Only a limited
number of fingerings are given in the score -it is strongly recommended to consult the book for the precise
fingerings and indications regarding reed position, air pressure, etc.

Bisbigliando

For the flute, the multiphonics have been worked in close colaboration with Carin Levine and most of the fingerings
have been taken from her bookThe techniques of Flute Playing.
For bassoon, most of the multiphonics fingerings where taken after try-outs with Pascal Gallois. The piece makes
extensive use of pedal notes, pitches which sound below the lowest normally played note. The fingerings are given
in the score, but in general these are really multiphonic fingerings with a strong low pitch. For example, the low A is
the result of fingering the low F and lifting the 3. finger of the left hand. It is in fact possible to play an overtone
glissando between this lowest A and the F.

Double bisbigliando

Notation
slow tongue vibrato. move the tongue to change the oral
cavity and touch the air stream, in order to produce
changes in timbre. Touching the air stream can make
certain overtones come out.
Only tongue, no pitch.

Flute. Blow away from the instrument, make it resonate.

Unfocused sound, loose embouchure.

Flute. Hand vibrato. Move the flute to intercept the air
stream intermitently.

The square notehead indicates the fingering.

P: Quasi trompa. Put the embouchure between the lips,

buzz them as if playing the trumpet. The flute produces
a defined pitch, approx. a minor seventh lower.
R : the same, with added voice action.

flatterzunge
With a multiphonic fingering, play an overtone gliss.
Multiphonic. If the M sign is under the pitch, this pitch
should be the upper note of the multiphonic. If it is above
the note, the note should just be included in the
multiphonic.

Overtone gliss. Normally indicates a transition between

two states of a same multiphonic. That is, the fingering
does not change, the different pitches indicated are
achieved with changes in the air pressure and in the lip
and embouchure positions. Its use is also extended to
indicate a transition between two multiphonics or
normal pitches where a change in fingering is needed.

Distorted sound, extra lip pressure (cuivre)

1) multiphonics notated in this way (with a diamond like "M") are to be determined by the performed -in contrast to those which
appear later, where both sounding pitches and a suggested fingering are given. In the case of undetermined multiphonics,
always a pitch is given which should be contained in the multiphonic. If the indicated pitch is above the "M", then it is expected
to be either the upper note of the multiphonic or a prominent one in its register. If the indicated pitch is below the "M", then a
multiphonic should be found which contains this pitch as its lowest note or as a very prominent pitch in its register.

which means variations in the support of the

which is here asked for, not a variation of pitch.
