For the ffh year in a row,
frst-year students in the Sel-
kirk College/University of
Victoria Bachelor of Science
in Nursing Program will be
helping to improve the health
of Kootenay-Boundary resi-
dents, by ofering free health
fairs for all ages in the region.
Tirty two students from
the program will be presenting
at the health fairs on a range of
health issues, including: child
safety, dementia, womens sex-
ual health, head injuries and
safety, mental health, frst-aid
and blood pressure awareness.
Tose attending will have
the opportunity to circulate
through various stations and
learn about all the information
being presented.
We had students do some
brainstorming on what topics
might be pertinent, explains
nursing facilitator, Joanne
Van der Ham. We were try-
ing to look for topics that are
relevant across the life span.
We wanted to put out topics
that would be interesting to
young families, older adults,
as well as adolescents. We
also wanted our students to
pick areas that interest them.
While they provide health in-
formation to communities, the
health fairs are also very much
about giving the students real-
life learning experience.
Te focus of this semester
is on establishing relation-
ships with individuals across
the life span, says Van der
Ham. Were learning about
health assessments, how
clients understand and pro-
mote their health, the role of
the nurse and the role of the
nurse as health educator.
Tis event will help our
students develop in all these
areas and hopefully beneft
the community as well. Were
also hoping it might infu-
ence peoples lifestyle and
create awareness on how to
make positive health chan-
ges.

Lardeau Valley Market
Te Lardeau Valley Market, under the auspices of Lar-
deau Valley Opportunity Links Society, will kick of its year
on Sunday, June 10 from 10 am to 2 pm beside the highway
in Meadow Creek, 40 kms north of Kaslo. Te markets will
run each Sunday (except August 5) until September 16.
Building on the success of Fiona Daniels work in its
inaugural year, a group of individuals and local organ-
izations have come together to support and expand the

Do Ya Doula?
What is a Doula? A Doula is a women trained and ex-
perienced in childbirth. She provides continuous physic-
al, emotional and informational support to the labour-
ing and birthing mother and her partner. Doulas work
together with other healthcare providers making birth
a rewarding experience for all involved. Recent studies
indicate that when a Doula is present there are better
outcomes for mothers and babies, shorter more comfort-
able labours, fewer complications, and greater maternal
satisfaction. Te Kootenay Doula Group ofers services to

Would you like to become a Doula? A Birth Doula
Training Workshop will be ofered on May 5 and 6 at the
Kootenay Family Place in Castlegar. Tis workshop has
been approved as one step toward certifcation by DONA,
the leading international Doula organization. Te course
will focus on the Doulas role in the prenatal period, dur-
ing labour, birth, and postpartum. Workshop participants
will learn about the emotional and physical processes
associated with giving birth, and will explore hands-on
techniques for pain relief during labour. Other topics in-
clude newborn care, breastfeeding, local resources and
peer support. Te two day workshop fee is $350 with all
course material provided. Registration deadline is April

Te snow will soon be gone and the Slocan Valley Mixed

Glen Bradley of Calgary passed away on Saturday,
March 3, 2012 at the age of 62 years after a valiant
struggle with cancer. Glen exemplied strength,
wisdom and love. He was the loving father of
Kristin, Dallas, Ale, and Whitney. The grandfather
of Meghan, the treasured son of Muriel Bradley, the
beloved brother of 5 sisters and 6 brothers, and the
uncle of numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces,
and grandnephews. Glen was raised in High River,
AB and various towns in the upper West Kootenay
in BC. He earned a BA in History and a Bachelor
of Education. He had a rewarding career working
as an executive with CP Rail. In his later years
he enjoyed travelling, writing his memoirs, and
playing golf as often as possible. Glen impacted
many lives, and we know that he will never be
forgotten by anyone that he has come in contact
with. Glen, you were a brave, strong, compassion-
ate, insightful, smart, and most of all a loving and
beautiful person. We will always love you, and just
remember, its not goodbye, its see you later.

open house with your MLA Katrine Conroy as well as
Edena Brown of the MLAs of ce who deals directly with
driving issues for seniors and Elaine Whitehead who han-

EcoSociety And CBT
Keep Kokanee Creek Open
West Kootenay EcoSociety will open the doors of the
Kokanee Creek Visitors Centre again this summer thanks
to a $15,000 grant from the Columbia Basin Trusts En-
vironmental Initiatives Program.
New this year will be the frst annual RedFish Festival
on Sunday, August 26. Te kokanee are the heart of the
park, says Reid. We see this festival as a great way to
celebrate their return and learn more about them.
Te centre will also be available for group rentals in May
and early June. Its a wonderful setting for a meeting or
seminar, says Reid. Te centre will be open from 9 am
to 9 pm beginning July 1 and will continue to ofer the
popular Science in the Park on Tuesdays, Storytelling in
the Park on Saturdays and evening naturalist programs
for the whole family.
Weekly schedules, volunteer opportunities, and more
information will be posted at EcoSocietys website: www.
ecosociety.ca.
Future of Kaslo Hospice
Te board of Nelson and District Hospice Society
(NDHS) invites you to attend a community consultation
on the future of hospice services in Kaslo on Wednesday,
March 28, 7 pm in the Kemball Memorial Centre (room
#208) upstairs.
Kaslo Hospice client numbers have doubled and at times,
tripled, during the past 5 years and new services have been
added. Unfortunately, despite the increased activity, Kaslo
Hospice struggles with ongoing fnancial sustainability.
Due to the lack of adequate increase in IHA funding and
dwindling donations, NDHS is concerned that hospice
services cannot be sustained without increased support
from the community. We also recognize that governing
at a distance has particular challenges and that the com-
munity may not feel a sense of ownership.
We therefore propose this meeting to explore options.
Te goals are to present reports on services, activities,
stats and the fnancial aspects of Kaslo Hospice and its fu-
ture sustainability, as well as to discuss possible options.
For example, Kaslo forms its own Hospice Society; North
Kootenay Lake Community Services considers taking over
running Kaslo Hospice; NDHS continues governing Kaslo
Hospice; the Kaslo Hospice of ce is closed.
Your participation is warmly welcomed.

April Fools Brunch At
Passmore Lodge
Te Slocan Valley Seniors Housing Society (SVSHS)
will be hosting an April Fools Brunch at the Passmore
Lodge on Sunday, April 1 from 10 am to 1 pm. Te event
features a great brunch as well as door prizes! Admission
for adults is a minimum $8 donation and kids can eat for
just $4. Te FunRaiser will feature breakfast wraps (ham
or veggie)with a fruit plate and refreshments. A toast op-
tion is also available.
One of the highlights of the brunch (besides a lot of
April Foolishness) will be a performance by the Slocan
Valley Community Band from 11 am to noon. Te 20
member band has been developing an amazing range of
music to share with the community, including selections
from Fiddler on the Roof to Firefies and Mambo No.
5! Everyone is invited to come out and experience their
musical talents.
Te Passmore Lodge is an independent living seniors
facility which grew out of intensive community eforts.
Because the current level of provincial funding for the fa-
cility is quite strained, the SVSHS must fundraise to help
the Lodge keep operating. Tis event is one of several that
they are ofering to help cover the gap. Te organization
is also looking at developing more housing in the Slocan
Valley to meet the ever-increasing needs. You can fnd out

Castlegar Toyota has recently adopted the use of QR
codes in their print advertising to provide automobile
shoppers with a rapid way to access information using
their smartphones or tablets.
QR (quick response), a technology that was developed
by Toyota in 1994 to keep track of their vast, world-wide
auto parts inventory.
Were thrilled to be implementing technology that
Toyota developed almost 20 years ago, said Craig Kalaw-
sky, president of Castlegar Toyota. Toyota has always been
a great innovator in the automotive sector and this is just
one example of an invention thats hit the mainstream in
a big way.
Since that time, QR codes have proven to be so useful
in rapidly accessing information that they are appearing
more and more in print ads every day. Te QR codes
themselves look like miniature crossword puzzles without
letters and numbers or clues.
Tese codes, when scanned with the camera of a smart-
phone or tablet and equipped with a free, easily download-
able QR scanner app, will rapidly to take you to a website
where you can learn more. Its that simple and that fast.

about what interests you.
Free QR scanner apps are readily available at Apples
iTunes store or anywhere else mobile apps for Android
and Blackberry devices may be found.
With smartphone and tablet sales expected to eclipse
sales of desktop computers by 2015, this technology is
garnering widespread attention.

hands, and they are extremely savvy about researching
and shopping for products online, said Kalawsky. Were
