Harlow Matters
YEAR
At the moment a massive share of the money paid by Harlow householders is taken away by Gordon Brown and spent in other parts of the country. Current figures show that Harlow tenants are paying 13.5m in a 'tenants tax' to the Government, with no benefit in return. What that means is 13.5 million is being taken away from Harlow every year, by Gordon Brown. Harlow's housing money should be for Harlow people. Local people should decide how Harlows money is spent: not the Government. Just imagine what 13.5m could do if it was spent in the community. I believe that Harlow tenants deserve greater choice and quality low-cost housing. It is about time that politicians stood up for tenants and first-time buyers. A Conservative government will do this. s If elected as your MP, I will campaign to: Keep Harlows 13.5m of housing money for Harlow people; Scrap stamp duty for first-buyers on homes upto 250k; Abolish Home Information Packs, which have made moving house even more expensive and difficult; Make it easier for social tenants to own or part-own their home, through shared equity schemes.

HARLOW HOUSING MONEY FOR HARLOW PEOPLE

This is one of the most serious issues facing Harlow today. Did you know that over 7000 people in Harlow are on local housing waiting lists? Sadly, under this bankrupt Labour government housing waiting lists have risen by 294%.

GORDON BROWNS RECESSION HITTING HARLOW HARD

We must put an end to high debt and high unemployment. Gordon Brown says the economy is turning the corner. But empty promises aren't worth a candle if you happen to be one of the 8500 people in Harlow without work. Hard times arent new to Harlow. Under this disastrous Labour Government, we suffered even during the boom years. Gordon Brown admits that between 2004 and 2008, joblessness doubled in Harlow. Labour still isnt working. Sadly, our area has suffered the worst of the Government's mishandling of the economy: repossessions are high, taxes are high, and now we know the dreadful unemployment figures. Harlow deserves better. If elected as your MP, I will fight for more employment in Harlow and for all our hardworking families stuck in the ever-lengthening queue for work.

Rob at Smiths Indust ries

People simply don't believe Labour's dishonest scaremongering about what the Conservatives will do. Far from being inactive on unemployment, we have been calling on the Government for years to introduce welfare reform and to end the situation where the poorest households pay the largest share of their income in tax. During this recession Conservatives have led the way on policies to respond to the unemployment crisis, such as subsidies to employers to help create new jobs and encourage companies to take on the unemployed, which Labour belatedly took up. The reality is that Labour's reckless approach to the public finances means that they will be raising taxes on jobs, just as the economy will be trying to recover. It is time for Labour, and for the Government's MPs to get real and face up to their responsibilities. Rather than trying to blame the Conservatives for everything, they should apologise to the electorate for the economic mess we are all in after 13 years of Labour rule. s

FED UP WITH HARLOW TRAFFIC?

Like most Harlow residents, I spend hours queuing in traffic on the A414. Traffic in Harlow has reached breaking point we all sit in roadworks on a daily basis and now is the time to say enough is enough. We desperately need a new northern relief road and an extra junction on the M11. Many have talked about it, but Labour have done nothing in 13 years. Now is the time for action.

A northern relief road would take HGV traffic away from Harlow, and provide proper access to the M11 for half of Harlow's commuters. I have sought urgent meetings with Lord Hanningfield, Leader of Essex County Council, and Theresa Villiers, the Conservatives Transport Secretary about this. See my website www.fedupwithharlowtraffic.com for updates. Together we can make this happen! Also, I am pressing the London Mayor to join me in campaigning for Oyster Card tap-in points at Harlow Town and Harlow Mill stations. In January 2010, the Oyster network will be extended to Overground trains as far north as Enfield Lock. Why not go one better, and let Harlow residents enjoy the benefits of Oyster Card travel? s

LABOURS TAX ON JOBS
Weve all seen the fallout from Labours dishonest Pre-Budget Report. Because Gordon Brown failed to take tough decisions now, there will be higher taxes and higher interest rates if Labour win the election. Gordon Browns headline promise from his pre-Budget Report was an increase in National Insurance for everyone earning over 20,000 his tax on jobs. Not only is this sum well below the national average wage of 23,400, the figure of 20,000 is also Labours definition of being well off. Of all the tax rises promised in the Report, this is the absolute priority for the Conservatives to block. Instead of coming clean about spending, Gordon Brown has made things worse. Labour will now introduce:

GIVING STRONG SUPPORT TO OUR NHS

The NHS is a unique British institution. The Conservatives will always provide the funding the NHS needs and are committed to real increases in health spending. It has been an honour for me to visit staff at Princess Alexandra Hospital. I am campaigning against Labours plans to cut A&E and Maternity services. Like local residents, I believe patients deserve access to high-quality services at their local hospital. A Conservative Government will increase the number of single rooms in the NHS. This will mean more opportunity for patients going into hospital for planned care to have a single room if they want one. We will also reform the way drugs are priced so that all new treatments that are clinically effective are made available. Under the Conservatives, cancer drugs routinely available in the rest of Europe will be provided in this country too. Most importantly, a Conservative government will set the NHS free from Labours disastrous legacy of ministerial meddling. I believe money should be spent on patient care, not wasteful bureaucracy. The staff at Princess Alexandra and throughout the NHS can always count on my support. s

Labours planned tax on jobs will be an extra 200 a year on someone

earning 30,000 a year, or 60 more on average earnings of around 23,000. We have to deal with the deficit urgently. Instead, Labour promised that they would borrow a further 789bn over the next six years doubling the national debt again to an eye-watering 1.5 trillion. This is like paying for the entire London 2012 Olympics 250 times, buying 555,556 new Lynx Wildcat Helicopters for our troops in Afghanistan, or building 1875 versions of the new Wembley Stadium. s

EDUCATION AND SKILLS OPPORTUNITIES FOR HARLOW YOUNGSTERS

Labour have failed on skills: the number of young people not in education, employment or training has risen and the numbers of real apprenticeships and Adult Learners are down. Under a Conservative Government, Harlow would benefit from a massive expansion in the provision of real apprenticeships. Every year, across the UK, the Conservatives will create 100,000 additional apprenticeships and preapprenticeship training places. We will make it easier for companies to run apprenticeships too. I have also secured a pledge from Lord Hanningfield, Leader of Essex County Council, for a further 1,000 of these apprenticeship places to be across Essex. Many local organisations in Harlow, like the Construction Training Partnership, have already made strides in this direction and deserve support. If elected as your MP, I will also champion better careers advice by voting for a new all-age careers service, and a careers adviser in every secondary school and college. s

SAFER STREETS
Labours pen-pushing approach to fighting crime has failed. We must win back the streets from the thugs and the vandals. I believe that Harlow police officers should be free to do their jobs. If elected as your MP, I will vote to scrap the stop and search form and the avalanche of paperwork that keeps our police officers stuck behind a desk, when they should be out helping our community. But we also need tough and honest sentencing. We will scrap Labours disastrous policy of early release and changing the law so that criminals convicted of knife crimes can expect to face prison. To beat crime we have to tackle the causes of crime, such as family breakdown, alcohol addiction and drug abuse. This has to start with more police on our streets - something I will continue campaigning for. s

SAVE OUR GREEN BELT

Harlow needs more homes but in a way that protects our precious green belt. Sadly, Labour announcements have confirmed my worst fears. Gordon Brown intends to ram through building on our green belt areas, with little consultation. My main objection to Gordon Browns housebuilding plans has been precisely this. Housing targets have been set from the centre of Government. There has been no genuine consultation involving local people and no guarantees of infrastructure funding. Gordon Brown's plans to concrete over our Green Belt are unnecessary, undemocratic, and unsustainable. They will not help the local communities who live here. The Conservatives have pledged to abolish all top-down housing targets, and get rid of undemocratic housing plans. If elected as your MP, I will fight for local people to decide where new homes go. I believe more must be done to build on brownfield land and to really involve local people in decision-making. When the election comes, say NO to Labours bulldozers. s

PROTECTING OUR ELDERLY

Under Labour our pensioners are subjected to means-tested benefits. They are left to make ends meet on a fixed income. If elected as your MP, I will fight to increase the basic state pension in line with earnings, so our pensioners can live with the dignity and the respect they deserve. We are committed to protect our pensioners. We will preserve disability living allowance and attendance allowance as cash benefits, which can be used to support family care and all the costs of disability. Labour will not match our promise. Nor have they done anything to stop people having to sell their homes to pay for long-term care. We will act where Labour have failed. s
