Harlow Matters
YEAR
At the moment a massive share of the money paid by Harlow householders is taken away by Gordon Brown and spent in other parts of the country. Current figures show that Harlow tenants are paying 13.5m in a 'tenants tax' to the Government, with no benefit in return. What that means is 13.5 million is being taken away from Harlow every year, by Gordon Brown. Harlow's housing money should be for Harlow people. Local people should decide how Harlows money is spent: not the Government. Just imagine what 13.5m could do if it was spent in the community. I believe that Harlow tenants deserve greater choice and quality low-cost housing. It is about time that politicians stood up for tenants and first-time buyers. A Conservative government will do this. s If elected as your MP, I will campaign to: Keep Harlows 13.5m of housing money for Harlow people; Scrap stamp duty for first-buyers on homes upto 250k; Abolish Home Information Packs, which have made moving house even more expensive and difficult; Make it easier for social tenants to own or part-own their home, through shared equity schemes.

People simply don't believe Labour's dishonest scaremongering about what the Conservatives will do. Far from being inactive on unemployment, we have been calling on the Government for years to introduce welfare reform and to end the situation where the poorest households pay the largest share of their income in tax. During this recession Conservatives have led the way on policies to respond to the unemployment crisis, such as subsidies to employers to help create new jobs and encourage companies to take on the unemployed, which Labour belatedly took up. The reality is that Labour's reckless approach to the public finances means that they will be raising taxes on jobs, just as the economy will be trying to recover. It is time for Labour, and for the Government's MPs to get real and face up to their responsibilities. Rather than trying to blame the Conservatives for everything, they should apologise to the electorate for the economic mess we are all in after 13 years of Labour rule. s

A northern relief road would take HGV traffic away from Harlow, and provide proper access to the M11 for half of Harlow's commuters. I have sought urgent meetings with Lord Hanningfield, Leader of Essex County Council, and Theresa Villiers, the Conservatives Transport Secretary about this. See my website www.fedupwithharlowtraffic.com for updates. Together we can make this happen! Also, I am pressing the London Mayor to join me in campaigning for Oyster Card tap-in points at Harlow Town and Harlow Mill stations. In January 2010, the Oyster network will be extended to Overground trains as far north as Enfield Lock. Why not go one better, and let Harlow residents enjoy the benefits of Oyster Card travel? s

SAFER STREETS
Labours pen-pushing approach to fighting crime has failed. We must win back the streets from the thugs and the vandals. I believe that Harlow police officers should be free to do their jobs. If elected as your MP, I will vote to scrap the stop and search form and the avalanche of paperwork that keeps our police officers stuck behind a desk, when they should be out helping our community. But we also need tough and honest sentencing. We will scrap Labours disastrous policy of early release and changing the law so that criminals convicted of knife crimes can expect to face prison. To beat crime we have to tackle the causes of crime, such as family breakdown, alcohol addiction and drug abuse. This has to start with more police on our streets - something I will continue campaigning for. s
