Foundation will open pub

PUB is being re-opened in memory of a man behind a number of Harlows wellknown sculptures. The Henry Moore Foundation has secured the lease for The Hoops Inn in Perry Green, Much Hadham, from independent Hertfordshire brewer McMullen, and has installed a new management team and interior ready for its grand re-opening on Saturday. Some of Henry Moores works including the Harlow Family Group, located in the Civic Centre are on display in the town, and it was partly due to his works that Harlow was of icially declared to be Harlow Sculpture Town The Worlds First Sculpture Town in 2009. The pub, originally built in the early 19th century, is located on The Henry Moore Foundation estate, opposite what was Moores home for 40 years, and was frequented by the sculptor for years before his death in August 1986 at the age of 88. We are very excited about opening The Hoops Inn, and about the quality of the dining experience we can now offer locals and visitors to the Foundation, said foundation director Richard Calvocoressi. We hope our new venture will have the rural informality of a village pub, but with the innovation and modernity that the Moores brought to life at Perry Green. Candice Webber, who previously ran The Restaurant at St Pauls Cathedral, has been drafted in as the venues new head chef, and is being joined in the kitchen by industry experts Lowri and Mark Williams, former Good Pub Guides Inn of the Year winners. Now featuring a quintessentially English interior, Moores legacy is evident through books, artefacts and prints. The venue boasts an expansive front and back garden, and a terrace for alfresco dining in the warmer months. The pubs grounds will also be used to grow herbs, fruit and vegetables for use in the restaurant throughout the year.

Bear essentials for day nursery

Business lunch

CHILDREN from Busy Bees Day Nursery brought a cuddly friend to school with them last Tuesday to raise money for charity. Every child at the nursery, on Greenway Business Park, brought in their favourite teddy bear ready for a tea party in the afternoon. In exchange for bringing in the bears, children made a small donation which will go to the premature baby charity Bliss.

Conservative government tackles immigration

THIS week in Westminster, the Government has made a major announcement to control immigration. This is an issue that local residents contact me about time and time again, particularly in regard to jobs and housing. For this reason, during the announcement, I asked the Home Secretary the following: Many people in Harlow will be concerned that their jobs are being given away, particularly by big companies like the major supermarkets, to temporary migrant workers. Will the Home Secretary set out how her measures will help this situation? Residents will be encouraged

by Theresa Mays reply, as she said that low-skilled immigration from outside the EU will be stopped. Only a small number of highly skilled immigrants, such as football players, scientists, or senior managers, will be allowed to settle permanently. She also promised to tighten up student visas, and said that transfers within companies will only be allowed for senior managers earning over 40,000. We will take action on the

abuse of student visas, which are by far the biggest single immigration category. Nearly half of all student visas in 2009 were issued to people studying at below degree level. From now on, students from foreign countries will only be able to study here if they are doing degree courses. On the family route, Mrs May said that people coming here to get married will have to show a basic command of English. I welcome these measures. There is a genuine concern about pressure on our jobs, housing, and public services. This is reflected in the emails that I get from constituents, too.

At the General Election we promised to reduce immigration levels to sustainable levels, and a cap on non-EU economic migrants is a vital irst step. Net immigration reached 196,000 in 2009 and without policy changes would remain at that level. The main issue is immigration from outside the EU - by far the largest contributor to the net igure which we will reduce to the tens of thousands annually. But to hit our overall target we will need to go further. Above all, it needs to be fair to the families who already live in this country, many of whom are unemployed or struggling on low incomes.

Coffee morning
WOOD Green Animal Shelters is holding a Christmas coffee morning in a bid to raise funds for the animal welfare charity.
