Dark side arrives

Normans ready to invade library

FAMILIES visiting Harlow Library this weekend can take part in a fun-filled historic adventure with a Normanthemed event. On Saturday, between 10am-4pm, visitors will have the opportunity to take part in activities that will transport them back to 1066, including designing a Norman shield and documenting history on a Bayeux-style tapestry. Children will be encouraged to use the library resources to research a design for their shield, as well having the chance to contribute a drawing to the library tapestry that will show the story of the library for years to come. For eager young Normans, a book list will be available on the day with suggested reading, as well as general history books on castles and shields to help fill that new thirst for knowledge. Cllr Jeremy Lucas, Essex County Councils cabinet member for heritage, culture and the arts, said: Its fantastic our library service has come up with another great fun and educational activity available right on our doorstep in Harlow. CI FI fans were given a real treat at the weekend as The Force returned to the Harvey Centre. The two-day event ran to mark the 3 Darths Collectables stores irst anniversary in the Harlow shopping centre. A host of special guests from on screen and behind the scenes were present to meet with fans and sign autographs, including voice actor Marc Silk, Simon Furman and Red Dwarfs Chloe Annett. The highlight of the event was the ever popular 501st Garrison who provided a host of Star Wars characters, such as Darth Vadar and his Stormtroopers, for shoppers to have their photo taken with. Ben Cook, second manager at 3 Darths said: People really enjoyed seeing the 501st Garrison characters, some people came into the centre purely to have their picture taken with them. THE Harlow Outdoor Centre in Burnt Mill has been rewarded for providing excellent learning outside the classroom experiences. The centre, alongside the other five Essex Outdoors venues operated across the county by Essex County Council, was awarded the Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge. Paul Stokes, spokesman for Essex Outdoors, said: Being awarded the Quality Badge is a real coup for all the employees here as it shows that we offer young people the type of high quality learning experiences they really benefit from. Were thrilled to get official recognition for our efforts and we look forward to welcoming even more children and young people from the local area to our centres.

Roast dinners, traffic and special medics

OVER the past two weeks, Parliament has been in recess and, apart from the Party Conference, I have spent my time visiting community organisations across Harlow and the villages. I was really pleased to support Holy Cross School for a roast dinner day (which was delicious). It was good to see so many parents there too. I have also held meetings with residents from Bury Road in Old Harlow to try and help them with problems. In the villages, I had a good session with Dobbs Weir to discuss traf ic reduction and noise issues. I have also visited Princess Alexandra Hospital to help them with their campaign on the use of Accident and Emergency. Last Friday, I travelled to Chelmsford

to the St Johns Ambulance County Awards. This is a special ceremony for long service and for special deeds done in saving lives. I was surrounded by a sea of uniforms. It was great to see so many SJA men and women getting the recognition they deserved for their service and achievement. One lady from Harlow received a medal for 49 years of service to the SJA Cadets and was handed her medal by the Lord Lieutenant of Essex.

I was called up and given a certi icate in recognition of being appointed President of Harlow SJA Division. I felt very honoured. I had been asked earlier in the year and immediately said yes. I look forward to representing Harlow SJA to the best of my ability. Next week, Parliament returns for a busy autumn. Bright idea from Rok

HARLOW Sea Cadets are benefitting from a new lighting system thanks to local building and maintenance specialist Rok. The Harlow Business Parkbased company donated the materials and skills of its technicians to repair and refit the main lighting systems at the cadets building in Bush Fair, where they have been based for 14 years. The project is part of Roks Community Challenge initiative, which involves delivering building projects for charities and local organisations free of charge. Mike Jezzard, Sea Cadet Chaplain and vice-chair, said: I cannot thank Rok enough for taking on the project. The technicians were great and got the job done quickly, everyone was impressed.
