NEWS Prestige for apprentices ROBERT R HALFON

emember last week I mentioned about a Harlow apprentice coming to work in my office? I was able to speak in a special apprenticeships debate in Parliament again this week. I argued that apprenticeships must be given more prestige. Over the next few years, I hope to see the founding of a Royal Society for Apprentices, similar to the Law Society or the British Medical Association. This would create a vibrant social life for young people, similar to that of university. It would also be fantastic if local authorities, like Harlow or Essex County Council, could run an Annual Apprenticeships Day in every town, which would be like a graduation ceremony for apprentices. At the other end of the spectrum, on Monday I raised the issue of unemployment among the over-50s. One gentleman I know from Harlow, Kevin Forbes, has applied for over 4700 jobs without success so far. And yet he is highly qualified in IT and management. His case has even been written about in The Guardian newspaper. Thats why I urged the Government to do more for older people, who are not necessarily on benefits, but who receive little training or support to find jobs. Dont forget, one of the things

MP

I hope to do as MP is to introduce more Harlow school children to the House of Commons, to show them our democracy, and also the magnificent buildings. On Wednesday, I was very pleased to meet pupils from Spinney Junior School, on their official tour of Parliament. If you would like to nominate a school or a youth group to come on a tour of Parliament, please get in touch via my website www.roberthalfon.com, or you can e-mail me at halfon4harlow@roberthalfon. com. I would be pleased to hear from you. FOLLOW me in Parliament on www.theyworkforyou. com, my blog http:// roberthalfon.blogspot.com or contact me via www. roberthalfon.com

Police find chickens by the roadside

The RSPCA is appealing for information after chickens were seen crossing a road in Harlow. Two hens, two cockerels and one chick were found by police by the side of Broadley Road at 9am last Tuesday (July 13). The birds were underweight and had some feather loss. They were alongside a large run and a two-tiered rabbit hutch, which was full of dirty water, old straw and faeces, although they were running free by the roadside when they were first spotted. The police called the RSPCA but before an inspector arrived, a member of the public passed the chickens and, as an experienced smallholder, decided she would rehome the hens and chick. After speaking to the RSPCA

inspector, who conducted home checks, the chickens have been rehomed, as have the cockerels. RSPCA inspector Nicola Middleton, said: Were really pleased we have already found new homes for them, but that doesnt excuse the heartless way they were left in the first place. Call the RSPCA in confidence on 0300 1234 999.
