August 4, 2012 Date of Teaching 10:10 11:10 Time

Objectives: Through a realia, illustrations and a thorough discussion, the third year students are expected to do the following with at least 75% accuracy: a. familiarize the formula for surface area, b. solve for the surface area of prisms some solids given the formula, and c. demonstrate accuracy in solving word problems related to finding surface area of a prism II Subject Matter: a. Topic: Surface Area of Some Solids b. Pre-requisite: area, perimeter, circumference c. Skills to Develop: Analytical Thinking Skills d. Teaching Strategy: Discussion e. Instructional Materials: Cut Figures, Realia of Space Figures, Manila, Cartolina f. Reference: Bernabe, Julieta, et. al. Geometry .2009. SD. Publication, Inc. Catao, Elizabeth, et. al. Mathematics I. 1994. Instructional Material Development Center. III Procedure: a. Stimulating: I The teacher will have a recap in the areas of plane figures: Area of a rectangle = L x W Area of a square = S2 Area of a triangle = bh Area of a circle = r2 Circumference of a circle = 2r b. Actual Activity: The teacher will show a box and asks the class what figure can be seen from the sides of the box.

The teacher cuts the edges of the box forming plane cut outs of rectangles.

How many rectangles can be drawn from the box? The class will form the area of each rectangle. Ar1 = LW Ar2 = LH Ar3 = LW Ar4 = WH Ar5 = LH Ar6 = WH

Getting the sum of these areas, we obtain the surface area of the rectangular prism. (Recall: rectangular prism is a prism whose bases are two rectangles parallel to each other) Surface area is the sum of the areas of the faces of a space figure. The surface area of a rectangular prism is given by: SAr = Ar1 + Ar2 + Ar3 + Ar4 + Ar5 + Ar6 SAr = LW +LH +LW + WH + WH + LW SAr = 2LW +2WH + 2LH Where : L = length of the rectangular base W = width of the rectangular base H = height of the prism Example : find the surface area of a rectangular prism whose length measures 7cm., width which measures 4cm. , and height which measures 2.5cm. Solution: L = 7cm. W = 4cm. H = 2.5cm SAr = 2LW +2WH + 2LH SAr = 2(7cm)(4cm) + 2(4cm)(2.5cm) + 2(7cm)(2.5cm) SAr= 56cm2 + 20cm2 + 35cm2 SAr = 111 cm2 Teacher shows a cube then cuts out the edges of the cube to forming squares of the same sizes.

What is the formula of the area of a square?

As = S2 How many squares did we obtain from the cut cube? 6 How do get the formula of the surface area of a cube? SA s = S2 + S2 + S2 + S2 + S2 + S2 SA s = 6S2 Where: S = measure of the sides of the cube Example: find the surface area of a cube whose sides measure 3in. Solution: S = 3in. SA s = 6S2 SA s = 6(3in)2 SA s = 54in2 The teacher again shows another space figure, this time, a cylinder.

She will detach the two circular bases of the cylinder then cuts its body to form a rectangle.

To find the formula of the surface area of the cylinder, we add the areas of its two circular bases and the area of its rectangular body. What formula do we need to find the surface area of a cylinder? Ac = r2 and Ar = L x W Where: L = 2r Let: W=h

(circumference of a circle) (for height of cylinder)

Notice that the measure of the length of the rectangle is just the circumference of the circular bases. So, we obtain the formula for the surface area of a cylinder by adding the area of the two circles to the area of the rectangle such that, SA = 2Ac + Ar SA = 2r2 + L x W SA = 2r2 + 2r h SA = 2r(r + h)

Example: find the surface area of a right circular cylinder with a radius of 1.5 inches and a height of 5.2 inches. Solution: r = 1.5in. h = 5.2in. SA = 2(r + h) SA s = 2(1.5in.)(1.5in.+ 5.2in.) SA s = 3in.(6.7in.) SA s = 201in2 c. Follow up: Answer the following items on your book: Pages 42 43 numbers 9 18 d. Generalization: 1. How do we find the surface areas of a prism and a cylinder? 2. What is the difference between surface area and an area? IV Evaluation: I. Find the surface area of each prism: 1. Cube whose sides measure a. 5.2cm. b. 6.3cm. 2. Rectangular prism whose length, width and height measures as follows a. L = 1m. W = 0.5m. H = 7m. b. L = 3.5cm. W = 2.3cm. H = 8cm. 3. Right circular cylinder whose circular base with radius measuring 3.7cm and a height which measures 7cm. II. Problem Solving: Ivy is to construct a box to contain a mug. If the mug has 3 inches diameter and a height of 4.3 inches, what is the surface area of the box if the tip of the mugs handle is 1.2 inches away from the side of the mug? V Assignment: In an index card, write the formula for the perimeter, area, surface area, and volume of plane figures.
