A Look Back
From the Archives of The Mercer County Chronicle 10 YEARS AGO (2002) To celebrate National FFA Week recently, The Fort Recovery FFA Chapter recently held a truck and tractor drive-in to help promote agriculture. Twenty four trucks and nineteen tractors were driven in that day. 25 YEARS AGO (1987) Coldwater Chief of Police Dean Schaller reported that vandals shattered the front windows of eight Coldwater School buses Sunday night. Because of the damage, the three undamaged buses had to double up on routes Monday morning which disrupted some classes. 50 YEARS AGO (1962) After a public meeting in Celina on March 21, the State Board of Education will now have until April 6 to make a final decision on what portion of the Franklin School District will transfer to Coldwater and what portion to Celina. A Nickel Plate diesel railroad cab caught on fire Saturday morning enroute from Fort Recovery to Coldwater. The fire was brought under control and put out by the Coldwater Fire Department at the corner of Walnut and Market streets.

well as did Ft. Recovery. The biggest problem was they had to play each other. Wish there were some way that wouldnt happen. But I guess that is what happens when you play in a great conference as the MAC. I wish there were some way to stop the rising cost of gasoline. It is getting to the point where it will become hard to buy gas and food at the same time. Those of us on a fixed income are going to start cutting corners somewhere. It becomes harder all the time to balance a budget with the way the economy is becoming. I dont think it is going to get any better if something doesnt change in Washington. It doesnt appear that is going to happen unless something drastic happens this coming November. Thats My Opinion....... Whats Yours??

If you have trouble with this nice weather then you must be in a bad way. It sure is nice to have it this warm (in the 70s) for this time of year. Maybe we had better enjoy it as April may be as different as March has been. Anyway this nice weather is a preview of things to come, as SPRING is only a few days away as of this writing. Lets hope it will be a good Spring. I guess we will just have to wait and see. Some of the farmers have been in the fields mainly with fertilizers only. I know they can hardly wait also. Kudos to the St. Henry Basketball team as they had a great year and the future looks good also. They represented Mercer County very

Your 401(k) offers tax-deductible contributions, tax-deferred growth of earnings potential and a variety of investment options so its a great tool for building retirement savings. Yet like all tools, your 401(k) must be used properly to get the best results. Thats why you should review your 401(k) at least annually and make whatever adjustments are needed. Depending on where you work, you may get some 401(k) review help from your plan provider. But if that assistance isnt available, you might want to consult with a financial professional to make sure youre getting the maximum benefit from your plan. As you begin to review your 401(k), your first question should probably be this: How much should I contribute? At the very least, try to put in enough to receive your employers matching contribution, if one is offered. If you dont earn this match, you are essentially walking away from free money. Lone Wolf. If you are an animal lover and interested in wolves you will care for Lone Wolf. The story line kept my attention but as I got into the book, I was reading excessively about the life and sometimes-questionable events of the man, Luke Warren, and the wolves. I trust that first-rate authors do extensive research and put true facts in their novels, but to believe that a man can be accepted by a pack of wolves and live with them for over a year makes me think of folklore in primitive days long gone. The main story line was very appealing as each character came to life on the pages. The characters and their story are told in alternating chapters. Luke, the father and wolf expert, Georgie, his ex-wife and mother of 23 year old Edward and 17 year old Cara. Joe, an attorney and new husband of Georgia, plays an important part in the second half of the book. This is a family broken down by the fathers obsession with all things wolves. Luke becomes famous when he does a TV program (reminiscent of Steve Irwin, The Crocodile Hunter) on wolves and their lives. He seems to love the animals more than his family. Each person has a story to tell and secrets to be revealed. After coming out that he is gay, Edward leaves the family to live aboard. Cara, a rather spoiled child, lives with her father in a trailer on the wildlife grounds until they are both in a horrible automotive accident that leaves Luke brain dead. Edward returns home at his mothers call and takes charge of his fathers wellbeing that includes wanting to pull the plug and putting the man to rest. Cara disagrees and wants to keep her father alive. Attorney Joe enters the picture and plays the good stepfather. It is the secrets that each character holds that keeps the reader interested until the end. Lone Wolf is a good read when one gets past all the wolf information and education. Read it for the family dynamics if for no other reason. On the other hand, pick up Home Front by Kristen Hannah, and I promise you will be entertained and educated. The library has Lone Wolf in large and regular print. Happy reading. Skeet

One of the best things about the dawn of spring and the return of warmer weather is the chance to get out of the house and get some fresh air. For homeowners, this is the perfect opportunity to assess any damage the previous months did to yards and develop a plan restore properties. * Dont jump the gun. The first warm day of spring might seem like a great time get out in the yard and get your hands dirty. But its best to wait until the grass has completely dried out before getting to work. Raking on wet grass increases the risk of tearing out grass, which can cause bald spots and the growth of weeds

months. Fallen branches, stones and even trash can accumulate in a yard, putting those who spend time in the yard at risk of injury once the warm weather returns. For instance, bits of twigs and pebbles that are blown across the yard during a windy winter can be embedded in the yard, making the yard less of a haven and more of a hazard. Once the grass is dry enough to walk on, walk around the property and remove any debris thats piled up over the last few months. * Employ a pre-emergent weed killer. Homeowners who routinely spend their summers agonizing over weeds throughout the yard should consider applying a pre-emergent weed killer around the beginning of spring. Its important to do so around the end of March or early April, when the weeds have not yet had a chance to grow. When applying, follow the dosage instructions provided by the products manufacturer. Such instructions often recommend a second application right before summer begins. * Remove thatch. Once the grass has dried, you can begin to remove thatch thats built up over the winter. Thatch is potentially very harmful to soil, blocking sunlight, air and moisture the soil needs to ensure a lawn looks lush and healthy. Thatch removal does not necessarily need to be an annual task. If thatch buildup is insignificant, then it can be done every other year. Just use a dethatching rake to make the job much easier. * Aerate, particularly if the yard is a heavy traffic area once the warm weather arrives. If your yard transforms into a childs wonderland upon the arrival of spring and summer, you might want to revive the soil by aerating. When the yard gets heavy usage, its easy for soil to become compacted, which makes it hard for air and water to reach the lawns roots. That can eventually make for a less-thanappealing lawn. So if your yard is the place to be come the warmer months, aerate in the spring to loosen the soil and make it easier for the lawn to withstand the months ahead.

Local fans will save on the gasoline bill this month as no local teams made the trip to Columbus. The two squads making the deepest run into tournament action, St. Henrys boys and New Knoxvilles girls may have lost in regional play, but both exceeded any reasonable expectations. Each squad should be feeling good about their seasons. Yes, the price of gas is rapidly approaching four dollars and according to the media experts may not stop there, but could hit five dollars before it stops. It does sound frightening, but I am sure we all have banked the money we did not have to spend on heating bills this winter. The Ohio State basketball Buckeyes are also providing us with some inexpensive entertainment. It was especially beneficial to take a break from those surprising outdoor chores last Saturday afternoon to watch the Buckeyes advance to tournament play this week. Positioning oneself in front of the set is cheaper and more fun than picking up yard trash or taking the Bride shopping. It was particularly enjoyable to see the play of Aaron Craft and hear the national basketball experts extol his skills, effort, and basketball sense. Liberty Benton High School, just west of Findlay, Ohio, is almost close enough for us to consider him an almost local boy. In addition to his late season play, the NCAA and Ohio State choose to feature Craft and his academic credentials. In addition to his point guard duties, he is a 3.9 GPA premed student. In major college ball, genuine student athletes who help the teams GPA and graduation rates, are too often found sitting on the end of the bench. We tend to be a confident and proud group here in west central Ohio and we should let it be known our major college student athletes were and are excellent college students, not just dumb jocks. In Mercer County the same qualities required for success in athletics are expected in the classroom by parents, teachers, and coaches. Exactly one year ago Marions Corey Luebke was having a strong showing in his second major league spring camp. Despite his excellent showing, the San Diego press did not see him making the opening day roster. He was slated as a starter in AAA with a possible call to the big club sometime during the season. This year, Luebke is again having a strong showing in his third big league camp. The west coast press now has him slated as the number two starter in the Padres five-man rotation, with a shot of becoming the true ace of the staff before the season ends. The Bride and I spent last Saturday near the State Park on the northeast shore of Grand Lake. We both noted that there was more boat traffic on the lake at that point than any time for the past two years. Alum and March weather in the upper 70s must be good for attitudes. The Big Ten has not had a winning football bowl season for years and their lack of success has certainly been noted by the sporting press. If the Conference is slipping in football, the basketball played by the big Midwestern universities is as strong as or stronger than ever. The conference still has four teams in the final sixteen and only the Team from Up North took an early exit from another Ohio team.
