HEMPEL protective coating systems certified according to NORSOK M-501

The NORSOK standards are a series of standards relevant to offshore installations developed by the Norwegian petroleum industry. NORSOK M-501 deals with the anticorrosive coating systems, and processes related to their application. It covers the requirements for the selection of coating materials and defines the requirements for surface preparation, application procedures and inspection for protective coatings to be applied during the construction and installation of offshore modules and associated facilities. NOROSOK M-501 defines 9 main areas. For 3 areas and 1 sub area the coating systems need to be prequalified. It means they have to undergo a long-term and extensive testing by an independent laboratory. These tests typically take about 7 months and only the best coating systems manage to pass through. For the remaining areas the coating systems have to be generally in accordance to the standards. Also the personnel involved in the application and inspections have to prove their qualification. As for the painters, they must be able to document their qualifications with craft certificates, or they have to pass a certain test on-site. The paint inspectors must be certified according to NS 476 (FROSIO) or NACE. When a coating system is certified according to NORSOK, it has a kind of quality stamp that meets most strict requirements for corrosion protection. Generally the NORSOK certification is relevant for offshore use and for some specific areas where prequalification is required. However all the customers with special requirements on long-term, reliable protection may select certified coating systems as a guarantee of the highest quality. Since HEMPEL always has paid a lot of attention to the quality, reliability and other properties of our products, we can offer coating systems that have passed the prequalification procedure and tests in accordance with NORSOK M-501. Some examples are given in the following tables.
