"dengue"

***defination=> =Dengue fever is a disease caused by a family of viruses that are transmitted by mosquitoes. It is an acute illness of sudden onset that usually follows a ben ign course with symptoms such as headache, fever, exhaustion, severe muscle and joint pain, swollen glands (lymphadenopathy), and rash. The presence (the "dengu e triad") of fever, rash, and headache (and other pains) is particularly charact eristic of dengue. Other signs of dengue fever include bleeding gums, severe pai n behind the eyes, and red palms and soles. Dengue (pronounced DENG-gay) stri es people with low levels of immunity. Because it is caused by one of four serotypes of virus, it is possible to get dengue fe ver multiple times. However, an attac of dengue produces immunity for a lifetim e to that particular serotype to which the patient was exposed. Dengue goes by other names, including "brea bone" or "dandy fever." Victims of d engue often have contortions due to the intense joint and muscle pain, hence the name brea bone fever. Slaves in the West Indies who contracted dengue were said to have dandy fever because of their postures and gait. =>Dengue fever is caused by one of four viruses that are transmitted by infect ed Aedes mosquitoes. The transmission of the disease occurs when a mosquito bite s an infected person and subsequently bites an uninfected person. The bite actua lly transmits the small amount of blood necessary to infect someone with dengue fever. Diagnosis is made through blood tests that scan for antibodies to dengue viruses. Infection usually becomes symptomatic 5-6 days after the infecting bite. The fir st symptoms are a high fever, generally 104-105 degrees F (40 degrees C), vomiti ng, nausea and a headache. Joint and muscular pain follow within the next days, and a flat, red rash may appear and spread from the torso to the limbs and face. The severe pains gave Dengue its nic name: brea -bone fever ****predisposing factor; =>The virus is contracted from the bite of a striped Aedes aegypti mosquito that has previously bitten an infected person. The mosquito flourishes during r ainy seasons but can breed in water-filled flower pots, plastic bags, and cans y ear-round. One mosquito bite can inflict the disease. The virus is not contagious and cannot be spread directly from person to person. There must be a person-to-mosquito-to-another-person pathway. ->etiologis agent; ->medical management; ***prognosis; =>Typical dengue is fatal in less than 1% of cases. The acute phase of the illn ess with fever and myalgias lasts about one to two wee s. Convalescence is accom panied by a feeling of wea ness (asthenia), and full recovery often ta es severa l wee s.
