ABSTRACT FOR SUSTAIN-A-BUILD (TEAM ID: 2993) Green building focuses on all aspects related to a building - right from

the site we choose to water efficiency, energy efficiency, material management, and indoor environment quality. Occupant comfort and Safety are other key issues with respect to a building design. We would like to take this a step further to green campus. Apart from the key focuses of green building we will have optimize parameters like transport within the campus, landscaping, maintaining the original topography etc. We have selected BITS Pilani, Hyderabad Campus for study and we will be evaluating it according to GRIHA criterias. (Campus from here in refers to BITS Pilani, Hyderabad Campus) Our campus gives us a very rich opportunity to explore various technologies in Green buildings, the major reason being it is a mixture of existing buildings and new constructions. The methodology we would like to adopt here is to study and learn from the existing buildings and transcend the knowledge to the upcoming ones. Each building has been evaluated by relevant GRIHA criterias and improvement opportunities have been explored and these have been added as suggestions for the building retrofits and as policies for new construction. The climatic zone in which Hyderabad falls is Composite. The peak summer temperature goes up to 45 C and the winter temperature drops to 15oC.

Under our preliminary evaluation the campus is capable of getting a score of 49/84 (Excluding the energy optimization criteria which have to be evaluated using an energy model). With few of our suggestions we can reach up to 61/84. A concise evaluation of the campus as per GRIHA norms has been provided below: Criteria 1: Site selection The area where the campus has been constructed has got all the necessary environmental clearances; the topsoil which is found in the campus is due to infill. The site has got a special bus stop from APSRTC Criteria 2: preservation of site Earth dikes, Sediment traps have been used during construction and for every tree that was cut down 10 saplings were planted in the campus, the age of the Rocks on campus have been identified as more than 500 years and great care has been taken during construction to preserve them. Criteria 3: Top soil conservation Embankments have been provided on all slopes and the top soil is provided with rich vegetative cover to avoid Erosion and Sedimentation. Criteria 5: Shading for hard paving Along all the Roads trees have been planted so as to give natural shading to them. All the parking areas have been designed underground to minimise the heat island effect.

ABSTRACT FOR SUSTAIN-A-BUILD (TEAM ID: 2993) Criteria 6: outdoor lighting The lights on campus are meeting the minimum efficacy value, We can go for light pipes and solar LED lights for outdoor lights to increase our efficiency, we also have our own technology of earth batteries (the way they work is depending on the salt content on the soil and we have to change the position of these earth batteries at regular intervals to ensure that these work Criteria 7: planning of roads The roads have been designed for a service life of 50 years and rigid paving have been used for the construction of roads this minimises failures in roads like pot hole formation which will lead to wastage of materials in repairing them. Pedestrian paths have been provided alongside the road to promote pedestrian traffic. Criteria 8: health of workers All the Workers have been given a temporary residence on campus with adequate sanitation facilities. Even needs like educating their children has been taken care. Criteria 9: Air pollution during construction Meshes with MERV 13 have been erected surrounding the construction area so as to minimize the air pollution during construction. Criteria 10: Reducing landscape water requirements Water usage for 100% landscaping comes from the STP (Sewage Treatment Plant) Criteria 11: Reducing water requirements Automatic Controls have been provided for the urinals and some of the toilets have been provided with dual flush plumbing system. This ensures a water saving by at least 40%.Further efficient plumbing systems has been installed along with water meters have been installed to ensure that no leakages happens at any fixtures Criteria 12: Water during construction By the usage of precast concrete, water usage during construction has been greatly reduced Criteria 13: Energy usage In conditioned spaces even though AC is provided it is operated only on need basis, this is ensured by providing 5 star rated fans and the AC are operated only in summers. In conditioned spaces even though Criteria 15: use of Fly ash in Construction Construction Material with fly ash have been preferred in our project Criteria 16: Use of low energy materials We define a low energy material as a material with low embodied energy. So we can come across such materials are often manufactured locally. So such materials have been procured majorly for finishing purposes

ABSTRACT FOR SUSTAIN-A-BUILD (TEAM ID: 2993) Criteria 17: Renewable energy system A pilot project has been launched for the usage of solar powered street lights; this will give a great opportunity to venture into renewable energy systems. All the water heating requirements have been taken care by usage of solar water heaters. Criteria 18: Waste water treatment Grey water is treated and reused and even the black water is treated by the STP on campus. Criteria 19: Rain water harvesting A rain water harvesting facility is available for all buildings on campus Criteria 20: Waste during construction Immense care has been taken to reduce the wastes generated from the construction activities and wastes generated have been disposed of properly Criteria 21 & 22: Waste Segregation & Storage and disposal Separate Pits have been provided for organic and inorganic wastes and even the inorganic waste has been segregated as recyclable and non-recyclable. Criteria 23: Resource recovery from waste A proposal for Biogas plant has been up and we can use this a opportunity as waste to energy system Criteria 24: Low VOC materials The Paints used in the buildings are low VOC paints and even the adhesives used are low VOC Criteria 25: minimize ozone depletion The gases that are used for the refrigeration purpose are non CFC gases Criteria 26: water quality management The water quality in campus is continuously monitored Criteria 27: noise levels Being an educational institute the focus on reducing the noise levels has been taken care. Criteria 28: Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS) control Smoking on campus is prohibited and this is the best way to control the ETS Apart from these criteria we have also concentrated on reducing the HVAC energy consumption by installation of VRF systems that will consume 30% less power than a normal HVAC system. --Rathish.S.A (Quark ID: Q114081) Bhanu Prakash.B (Quark ID: Q116280) Ravish Kumar.V (Quark ID: Q112927) 3|Page
