WRITING
Please briey elaborate on one of your extracurricular activities or work experiences in the space below.
During the late summer/fall of 2011, I had the opportunity to lead and teach an English club at "Universidad Rafael Nunez".
The English club was called "Club de Ingles" and was in junction with an English program called "Soy Bilingual" at the

aforementioned university. Over the course of three months, I taught English to university students who were interested in the

language with the help of an English professor at Universidad Rafael Nunez. Our club would take place every Thursday for a
little over 2 hours and we would discuss a variety of topics as well as review grammar, spelling, vocabulary, etc. We also put

emphasis on spoken English and the club ended with each student giving a short oral presentation on a subject of the
students' choice.

The completion of the "Club de Ingles" marked the launch of something new because it meant that Colombian universities are

As a child, I was always on the move as my father, a missionary, would often take me to
different places for his work. Although I had already been to countries all over the world, I had
never stayed in a foreign country for more than a couple months. However, it has now been 5
years since I last moved to Cartagena, Colombia.
IE
When I first arrived, I noticed right away that everything was going to be
different. Different foods, different people, different culture, different country. What I did not
notice was that the longer I stayed in Colombia, the more different it made me. I realized this
when I returned to America for a short vacation. The same people I had known appeared so
different and I saw things so differently from them. It became more apparent to me with my
participation in the PEOPLE program. Not only people I knew, but people I didn't know seemed
so different from how I previously pictured Americans to be. As a result of my changes, I felt a
little isolated from the people I once knew. Over time, however, I began to to develope a multicultural identity and it began to change the way I thought and acted.

Being home schooled was one of the most impactful experiences of my academic life.
Before moving to Cartagena, Colombia, I had never been home schooled and I had
only heard about it. To be perfectly honest, I did not even know what to expect.
When I started my first day of home school, I found it surprisingly
pleasant. I could wake up later, eat and play when I wanted and still finish school. But
as time dragged on, I realized how much more my grades were reflected by my own
perseverance and responsibility. It was then that I began to take charge of my
academic life. Because my parents did not always have the time to attend to my
studies, I had to make do and become something of an autodidact.
Those were not the easiest of times. Many times I would cry out of frustration.
Other times, I would want to just quit and not do anything. Many times I was
depressed and my mind would go blank. On the other hand, I had my future to think
about. Additionally, I wanted to be an encouragement for my younger brothers who
were also going through the same troubles.
So as months and years passed by, I began to know myself in a different way. I
learned when and how I studied best. Teaching myself became easier and I learned
extremely important skills like time management, resource management, and selfaccountability. Looking back now, I do not regret not being able to have a normal,
public high school life as much because I consider the things I learned through my
home school experience as priceless.
Home school has taught me that even in the face of difficult circumstances, it is
possible to overcome through work and dedication. It has also taught me that I am in
direct control of my future and the responsibility that it calls for. Regardless of
educational background, I believe that intelligence is something earned by the
individual. Conclusively, my home school experience has been an uplifting and
humbling experience that has made its mark in my life.
Lastly, my being homeschooled has lead some to assume that I am something
of an introvert, but that is not the case. Because I did not have much of a chance at
much social interaction in home school, I practically jump at every chance to be
involved with others. And like Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, To be yourself in a
world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest
accomplishment. So although I try to be as involved with others as I can, I never let
anyone define me, rather, I define myself.
