Personal History

Applying to a Ph.D. program is my short term goal and becoming an outstanding

researcher and teacher is my ultimate goal. In order to fulfill my object, I have studied
hard and performed very well on my academic studies and plan to continue my
graduate studies at a university where I can broaden my vision and surround myself in
a superb environment to do advanced research. I believe that the esteemed University
of California at Berkeley is an excellent place for me to continue my graduate studies
towards a Ph.D. degree.
In childhood, I spent a lot of time playing LEGO and reproduce manmade
elements found in the real world(excavators, airplanes, boats ,etc) or machines in the
imaginary world (UFO, robots with A.I.). During playing LEGO, I learned how to
achieve my goal systematically and think like an engineer. While constructing one of
them, I first figured out the shape and the characteristics of it, and then thought of
how to use the LEGO elements I had to built the prototype. If I didn’t have the
proper pieces , I assembled two or more LEGO blocks to fit my model. From
handling LEGO, I discovered the joy of making things by hand and I played
appliances I could put my hands on to figure out how they work. This passion about
the mechanism prompted me to choose Mechanical Engineering as my undergraduate
major at National Taiwan University.
My interest in pursuing my graduate studies in the United States grew even more
in graduate school at National Taiwan University. From the course, Introduction to
Solid State Physics, I learned how the large-scale properties of solid materials result
from their atomic-scale properties such as crystallography, electromagnetism, and
quantum behaviors. This new knowledge put me at awe and made me want to study
further. Therefore, I choose the phonon and its application on Solidly Mounted
Resonators as my research topic. I favored developing mathematical models for
physical phenomena and solving them with computers. From the results of simulation,
some details of phonon behavior were understood further. In order to build solid
knowledge background, I took a number of classes about modern physics and
electromagnetism. In the end of the second semester, I fabricated the Solidly Mounted
Resonator with microfabrication technology in the Microsystems Technology Lab
supervised by Prof. Yuan-Fang Chou. I believe theoretic simulation would be verified
by the experiments. During graduate studies, I discovered the joy of doing research
and intended to apply Ph.D. program in U.C.B. I am interested in the fields of Micro
and Nano technology, Phonon and Acoustics, and Bioengineering that are promising
industries in the future. Since the area of research in the Mechanical Department at
U.C.B closely overlaps my own interest, I believe U.C.B is an excellent campus for
me to continue my graduate studies towards a Ph.D. degree. I look forward to join
U.C.B and, after graduation, be an outstanding researcher who will improve the life
quality of human beings.
