Debate: International Military in Restoring Democracy in Myanmar International military is needed to restore rule of democracy to Myanmar is the topic

of the final debate, Ateneo de Manila University versus San Beda College. Each member of two teams was given seven minutes to argue and defend their side. Twenty minutes before the debate, the side that they will defend or argue was given and they only have these minutes to prepare. The Ateneo de Manila University was in the government side which means they are not favor of international military while San Beda College should defend the opposition side to restore the rule of democracy to Myanmar. The judges of the said debate will judge according to matter, manner and method. The first speaker was Sharmila Parnang, from Ateneo de Manila University, disagree to the international military sanction. She said that it is an ineffective tool of foreign policy. Putting a sanction will just lessen the power of the government and according to her it is just a long term proposal. Additionally, she said that rally is very crucial. I agree the crucial should not sustain or tolerate and it is important to move forward. She said it is true that the Junta disrespects the democracy and human rights of the people but if there are many protesters, you cant get away to interfere. For Junta, life should be safeguard at very first. Next speaker was Giancarlo Garcia, from San Beda College, said that the sanction was coming from Asia, not from West. He also gives examples of the countries that international sanction was effectively implemented. Myanmar needs intervention or involvement to what is happening. Sanction is needed to be a more organic policy or simply the long term policy to strengthen and help the people below. In both arguments, they have points on both side but government side presented a more balanced reason on why they are against international military. Also because she said the possibilities that can happen to Myanmar if the West enters them by having sanctions. Charisse Borromeo was the next speaker from Ateneo de Manila University. She said that if the international military intervene, if the

military send troops in, the Junta wont be able to send theirs. Next is the Junta will be violently overthrow that shows that the power of Junta will be unpowered. She said that they are not ruling out sanction but they are just more on the possibilities and its disadvantage if the international military enters Myanmar. She said that state compose of people. If foreign were sending their own soldiers, it means they will be building a state. In what she has said, I agree to that logic. According to Jayson Malilit of San Beda College, if the international military came, the Junta will still surely fight because they still have a lot of child soldiers. It is like a contradictory to what Charisse said. According to him that 40% of their national budget goes to the military. I realize if, still, they can fight international military, how come they will be powerless? He also said that, is having a democratic country means to just rally on street? He got a point. Both of them have their points. In this debate, they both deserve to be in final round but I think the Ateneo truly deserves to win because they gave their side well. The San Beda also gave a shot but the Ateneo actually defend and argue well. In their limited seven minutes given time, they were able to balanced and effectively delivered their argument. Sharmila Parnang spoke fluently, even fast, as she delivered her side. There are parts that I dont understand because I am not that good in listening with a debate style of speaking. She has a very good hand gesture while delivering and it gives emphasis to the words that shes saying. Next is Charisse Borromeo, she spoke well and also with a proper gesture. I admire her how she stops or to tell to pause for a while to the opponent, it is formal. Next is Giancarlo Garcia who spokes very well but he looks tensed and while delivering he used filler words. Then Jayson Malilit also delivers it well. They are all good and I think I am less a half to be like them. Its like a thousand miles away.
