County council working hard

ESSEX County Council (ECC) has moved to let residents know it is working hard to drive costs out of the organisation and maintain frontline services, following the Governments budget announcement on Tuesday. The council has been aware of the need for change and has not been waiting for the government to announce planned budget cuts. As a result of this initiative to transform the council, it says it is in a good position to respond to the challenging announcements made by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne. County Councillor David Finch, deputy leader and cabinet member for finance and transformation said on Tuesday: It is too early to say exactly how the Budget will affect residents, but we are working to ensure that frontline services are protected as much as possible. We will be looking at the announcement in detail and along with the spending review we carry out each year, this will help us plan our finances for the coming years, ensuring we concentrate on the needs of the people of Essex.

t has been an important week for Harlow in Parliament. On Tuesday night I spoke in a debate supporting the move of the Heath Protection Agency (HPA) to Harlow. Not only would the move give value for the money for the taxpayer but it would bring hundreds of much-needed jobs and investment, and help with regeneration. It is hoped that the HPA will move into the Glaxo plant, which would be adequate for its needs. It is going to be a hard case to make to Government, which is why I have been active in Parliament and will shortly have a meeting with the Health Minister.

Rob at Greenbrook Electricals Industries Harlow Hammond said that he would welcome a robust case from local authorities, and that the bypass would be looked at seriously, once financial conditions had improved and our economic problems had been sorted. I will continue to do all I can to press the issue.
