Firefighters pull together for Rae
SIR Many of your readers will have noticed Harlow, Old Harlow and Loughton firefighters pulling a fire engine around Harlow last Saturday. The reason the firefighters went to so much effort was for little Rae White. Rae is two years old and is suffering from spinal muscular atrophy, a condition which has no known cure or treatment. It was brought to their notice that Rae needed a motorised wheelchair to improve her quality of life, so they set themselves a challenge to assist in obtaining it for her. A huge number of Harlow residents, both motorists and pedestrians, stopped to give their change, and notes in some cases, to a very worthy cause. I wanted to take this opportunity, through your paper to thank them for their compassion and generosity. Divisional Officer Mark Samuels, Essex County Fire & Rescue Service SIR It was with some shock and amazement I read that the Ministry of Justice is planning to close Harlow and Epping magistrates courts as well as the Harlow County Court (Courts facing closure threat, Herald, June 24). Kenneth Clarke (Minister for Justice) states: I will ensure that we keep courts in the most strategically important locations, communities continue to have access to courts within a reasonable travelling distance. Surely a town of some 80,000 people must have some strategic importance? Tony Edwards, Felmongers, Harlow contribution will make a real difference to the chances of that project actually succeeding. A simple application form can be requested from Yvette Wetton on 01206 436079 or by e-mail at Yvette.wetton@essex. gov.uk. The closing date for the completion and submission of application forms will be October 5. In order to support as many projects as possible, it is my understanding that the maximum individual allocation will be in the region of 4000. The basic requirements of projects being proposed are that: (1) The project will achieve tangible improvement to peoples lives; (2) Matched funding is desirable but not an essential element; and (3) Applicants will need to demonstrate community support; in particular engagement with young people or participation of volunteers. To my continuing annoyance Harlow has lagged behind neighbouring areas like Epping, Brentwood and Uttlesford in securing grants under schemes such as this. So please, if you think you may meet the criteria contact Mrs Yvette Wetton today. Remember, nothing ventured, nothing gained. Good luck! Essex funding
