TOPIC WIND ENERGY APPLICATIONS.

. INTRODUCTION Wind energy has been used since the earliest civilization to grind grain, pump water from deep wells, and power sailboats and etc. In recent decades, wind energy is one of the renewable means of electricity generation that is part of the worldwide discussion on the future of energy generation and consequent effects on the environment. Wind energy can be into a useful form of energy, such as using wind turbine to make electricity, windmills for mechanical power, wind pumps for water pumping or drainage, or sails to propel ships. HOW WIND IS CREATED? The sun warms the Earths surface by variable amounts at different locations, thereby creating differential pressures which initiate air motions. Thus it can be said that wind is a manifestation of solar energy. Heating is greatest at the equator, and in the upper layers of the atmosphere, air flows away from the equator. ELECTRICITY GENERATION A wind turbine is a device that converts kinetic energy from the wind into mechanical energy. If the mechanical energy is used to produce electricity, the device may be called a wind generator . CLASSIFICATION OF WIND TURBINE.

WIND TURBINE COMPONENTS Main components Blades Rotor Generator Tower Tail

LATEST TYPE OF WIND TURINE . MAGLEV TURBINE

In 2007, Chinese company Zhongke Hengyuan Energy Technology invested 400 million Yuan (55 million USD) in the building of a massive maglev turbine. In this type of turbine each blade operates in a frictionless environment , this is possible because powerful magnets suspends the blades in air . Compared to a normal windmill, the maglev windmill would be 1,500 times more powerful.

Wind powered vehicle The wind pushes the vehicle forward, and once moving the wheels turn the propeller. The propeller spins in the opposite direction to that expected, pushing the wind backwards, which in turn pushes the car forwards, turning the wheels, and thus turning the propeller faster still. WIND POWERED WATER PUMPS

Here wind energy drives the pump, with the help of proper

arrangement. Pumping action is totally dependent on

wind energy present . This type of designs is commonly used in places where there is problem of electricity. Research and development work is being continuously carried out for improvement in design and applications. Major components used are as follows: Main-blade rotor Gear box Tower Mill swivel

WIND POWERED BOATS AND SHIPS Since ancient decades wind energy is used to sail boats and ships and even today wind energy is also used . Use of wind energy is increasing due to continuous increase in price of fossil fuels and also due to running down of fossil fuels.

LATEST WIND POWERD SHIPS This type of design reduces fuel consumption by 50%, which lower the transportation cost and saves fossil fuels. ADVANTAGES Wind energy is friendly to the surrounding environment (eco-friendly). Newer technologies are making the extraction of wind energy much more efficient. It is abundant in nature. It can be easily captured for use . Remote areas that are not connected to the electricity power grid can use wind turbines to produce their own supply.

LIMITATIONS Construction of equipments can be very expensive. Equipment output totally depends upon wind . Generally gives less output than the average fossil fuelled equipments.

Conclusion

Wind energy is a main contributor to the implementation of renewable energy production. However, the current R&D efforts for wind energy are insufficient at all levels - to respond to the energy challenges faced. The risk is therefore of failure in reaching the objectives for energy production from renewable sources and therefore on reduction of CO2 emissions.
