Florano 2008-22194 Personal Reflection Day 1-9

EDUC 190

January 3, 2012

At first, I was really excited about my first class in my second semester in UP. Then, I just finally found out that it was moved to the next meeting. From this, I started to hate my first day of school since its my only class during that Wednesday. Thats the only instance when I learned that the first meeting was moved to Friday. In our first meeting, I came early than my other classmates. And thats a challenge since Im practicing myself to wake up earlier (although last semester, I have had a 7am class). And then one by one, I have seen the face of my classmates. I have two orgmates and friends and some few old classmates on different subjects. I didnt feel awkward indeed. We had our first activity. It was a game (BINGO-like game) but with a twist. We have to talk to each other in order to fill up all those boxes needed. It was little bit awkward since its our first time to mingle as classmates. Even though some of my late classmates were coming, we still continue to play the game. After a while, two of my classmates had their BINGO papers filled. Our professor, Sir Noel Feria, tested everyone if we can enumerate and memorize all our nicknames. At last, we already knew our names (maybe! but I still didnt remember some of their names). On our second meeting, we had our syllabus discusses by our professor. His 8-pages syllabus was a blast. I thought it is that long but after he discussed it all, it was just that well explained. My comment about the syllabus was its so complete and detailed. I really look forward to my remaining classes this 2012 since were about to learn a lot of things that were ignorant before. After he discussed the topics, he then explained the bases for grading. I was surprised when he let us decide on the percent divisions of each items. At last, we came with our percentage agreement. On our 3rd meeting, our professor has shown us a presentation about the computer peripherals. He also discussed the introduction to educational technology. Actually, at this point, Im a little bit bored since I already know what the lesson was about. But, when he called our attention about his questions, I really thought that what I know wasnt enough. I have a bunch of information that I still have to learn. Maybe by being updated to some groups and sites that relates to technology, I can see things in a different way. The Days 4-6 of our EDUC 190 were wonderful. We met new people from the College of Engineering. These were the Computer Science students. In collaboration with the instructors from the said college (where one of them was Professor Noels brother), together we had to create a project (a software for to be used as instruction to students of different grade levels that we have to choose). We also learn a lot of things such as rightfully creating a model lesson plan that involves and encompasses the different objectives needed, areas in the lesson

plan where we can apply the technology that we were about to plan, and other stuffs such as specific languages to be used. From these lessons, I can say that I can really enjoy the rest of my EDUC 190 class. Actually, frankly speaking, if Im not an Education student, I could be a ComSci or ComEng student since I really like working with computers. Installing software and OS on my computers at home was really my hobby. On Day 6, our professor has shown us a film about the history of Open Source. At first, it was really boring since its really a documentary and I hate those lengthy interviews from people that I really dont know. But, I became interested when the film presented the different anomalies about the Microsoft. From that point, I paid attention to the movie. I learned that there were a lot of software that were free and efficient to use, not only those costly programs made by Microsoft. I also learned about some software that Im already using were products of the Open Source group. At the end of the movie, I realized a lot of things. (1) There were people who were that dedicated in making programs for the people. (2) Some large companies were already using these free software for their business purposes and others. (3) There were a lot of anomalies that the Microsoft was hiding in order to make the company richer. (4) We can use the software made by the Open Source as an alternative for the expensive programs by the Microsoft. On Day 7, the professor from the DCS discussed about the user stories or the instructions that we want to put on the software that were having. My group mates and I became very excited as we conversed about the inputs that were going to have in our project. They have to be very specific so its not that easy to think. We have several suggestions but some of them were not possible for the project. So, we limit the inputs. On Day 8, the class continued the discussion about the Free and Open Source (I think this was the time when the class discussed about the Tuxpaint, a program that would develop the creativity of grade school or pre-school students). I failed to attend the class since I have to practice in the college Choir competition on that same day. Day 9 was the most exciting since the class have to apply what we have learned last meeting (Im not present that meeting). I came late but I still able to participate on the session. Our class taught the preschool students from UPIS about one of the free software, the TuxPaint. Its really nice to see these students enjoy the software we have presented though some of them were already familiar with the program. I realized that if the young generation (pre-school students) were informed about these things, the percentage of literacy will be increased in the future. Of all the meetings that I attended in my EDUC 190 class in 2011, I really enjoyed the last one. And I do hope that the next meetings will be happier.
