Indonesia Weighing Introduction of a Nationwide Single Time Zone
T h e n a t i o n a l government has ordered all branches to simulate a change from three time zones to a single nationwide time zone. Promoted as an efficiency move, the government is targeting August 17, 2012, as the date for the introduction of the single time zone concept. The presidentially chaired Indonesian Economic Committee (KP3EI) is driving the change. Quoted in The Jakarta Globe, a

Pusdalops is now working with regency governments in Bali to channel aid to those who suffered losses during the recent storms. www.balidiscovery.com The national government insists that a single time zone would bring significant economic benefit to the country by promoting productivity and efficiency. Shown are the changes in sunrise and sunset times on that date in three different Indonesia locations under the current three time zone system and under a single time zone.

Nepor ent, who has experience operating health clubs, said while she prefers to see staff on duty at n i g h t , sometimes it's not economically feasible. "A lot of residential gyms in apartment buildings are lightly manned or unmanned," she said, adding that for turnkey gyms, cameras are a must. Neporent said when she does hit the gym at 3:00 a.m., the crowd's different. "At 6:00 a.m. you get the professionals going to work. Late morning you see a lot of stay-athome moms. Overnight I tend to see more creative types," she said. "More piercings, more tattoos. I have met interesting people at three or four in the morning."

the island, leaving a confirmed 11 people dead and two still missing over a 5-day period. Material damages caused by the series of storms that brought flooding, landslide and high winds have been estimated at Rp. 1.9 billion (US$211,000). According to Kompas.com, data from the Disaster Mitigation Agency (Pusdalops) there were five deaths attributed to landslides in the Bangli regency near Kintamani; three killed by falling trees and buildings in Gianyar regency; two killed in Karangasem by falling trees; and another death under a fallen tree in Buleleng. The death toll of 11 does not include 2 more people missing following landslides in Kintamani and still being sought by search and rescue workers. Meanwhile, in Bali's capital of Denpasar four people were Indonesia, equal in breadth to the Continental U.S.A which has 4 time zones, stretches east to west over a distance roughly equal to one-quarter of the world's circumference. During WWII the Japanese occupying forces established a single time zone of UTC+9 to put Indonesia on the same time zone with Japan. Dutch colonial rulers, however, divided Indonesia into six separate time zones in gradations of 30 minutes.

Working out in the early hours

Night owls, insomniacs, shift workers and other denizens of the dark are finding less need to fit their workout time into the nine-to-five world.
More gyms are remaining open round the clock, experts say, spurred by advances in surveillance and security technology, clients' ever more fluid work habits and a generation of multi-tasking consumers. "A lot of people work untraditional times and they take advantage of clubs open at all hours," said Carl Liebert, CEO of 24 Hour Fitness, an international chain of health clubs, most of them open around the clock. Liebert said his 30-yearold chain has s e e n a n increase in after-hours traffic, with five to 15 percent of clients, depending on location, working out between midnight and 5:00 a.m. "I think people have changed," he said. "They're online; they're connected day and night. When I grew up I went to bed at night and got up in the morning. Between those times I wasn't multitasking." Liebert said common night visitors include people who work out to relieve stress, insomniacs, and hard-core fitness fanatics who wouldn't miss a workout and prefer a gym less crowded. The number of health clubs open 24 hours has soared from just a couple of hundred five years ago to more than 2,000 today, according to IHRSA, the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association, a trade association of fitness facilities. Spokesperson Meredith Poppler said while most club goers still work out during regular hours, technology has enabled small, often rural, clubs to operate overnight, and sometimes

Bali would experience no change if the new time-zone plan were implemented.

BALI THE RIGHT WAY

day again punters and welcome to the 2012 Nyepi edition of Balis most well read and popular weekly newspaper, The Kuta Weekly. Here we go for another day of silence with no Indo vision for the day and no lights for the night time, so it's batten down the hatches and relax while sitting in complete darkness and silence. The day of silence or Nyepi as the Balinese call it, is a day Aaliasj@kutaweekly.com of reflection and signifies the start of the New Year for all Balinese who believe that the evil spirits will be passing over the island and provided the lights are out, will not see us, and just slip on by without stopping. It really is to be taken seriously by everyone, as a courtesy to the Hindu culture. Even tourists are not exempt, although free to do as you wish inside your hotels, no one is allowed onto the beaches or streets, and the only airport in Bali remains closed for the entire day. The only exceptions granted are for emergency vehicles carrying those with life-threatening conditions or women about to give birth. So people, when in Rome do as they do, and offer you utmost respect. Quietly, quietly please. As I said in the last ramble, I believe if you set the television channel to the desired number and leave it alone, you should be fine, and potentially get the English speaking tele we so desperately crave. Just in case, I would head out and grab a handful of CDs for the day. Finally, this week not only brings the Autumn equinox, which means the seasons are heading back the other way, and the days will now get shorter of light, but, the 2012 A.F.L season starts. I really don't understand the N.A.B Cup thing and am thankful that's over. This week brings the dawn of a new rivalry in the east, as Greater Western Sydney embarks on its journey as the designated home side against the Sydney Swans. Kickoff is Saturday evening at ANZ Stadium, so finally some action. I believe the bookies have about written off G.W.S and are offering ridiculous odd to that effect. I did see one place on the internet that was offering a 99.5 point start on odds. Any serious gambling man would have to have a good think about that one. It should be a ripper season with a heap of changes at so many different teams. Of course my bet for the year is the Pies, but what would I know. Bring it on I say. Be sure to get down to your local and register with the footy tipping before the first bounce. Sympathy to jim steins family after losing his fight with cancer. Lastly this week I will give a little space on the page to the great work the Indonesian intelligence agencies have done in foiling a suspected plot to ruin Nyepi Day in Bali. It seems my loyal readers, that a crew had been scoping out different places to target, and got busted while doing so. These people resisted arrest when confronted by the officialdom and all ended up dead as a result. I think I speak for the entire free living world when I say thank you to the Indonesian police for making the island that little bit safer for us all. Keep up the good work troops. Ok folks, again I've come to the end of the page and am about ready to go sink a few little cold green ones for the cause. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens when the cost of fuel goes up at the start of next month and whether or not the little green bottles do the same thing. I'm tipping that most things will have a slight increase and suggest the penny pinchers will let us all know when and where they do. I think it's absolutely hilarious that for a few cents, some people won't consider drinking beers at different places and insist that they only drink at specific venues for the company and conversation, which we all know is a croc of shit, as it's all based on the price. Not only are we dealing with alcoholics but tight fisted ones at that. I really do hope the most of you stay safe, happy, healthy and above all else remember, He who runs behind a truck is exhausted, and he who runs in front of a truck is tired. Enjoy your week, ALIASJ

Chinese farmer gets 13 years for Forbidden City theft

were left red faced after several items on loan from a Hong Kong museum were stolen. Shi Baikui, from the eastern province of Shandong, broke into the museum and stole nine art works made of gold and jewels, but in his haste to escape left five of the pieces inside the museum compound. "Failing to immediately sell the treasures, he threw the other Curators at the Palace four pieces away the next day," it Museum, housed in the former said, citing a court statement. Three pieces have yet to be home of China's last emperors,

Poo for tea, China's pandas drop a top brew

China's national treasure, the giant panda, will become even more precious if one businessman succeeds in using their dung to grow organic green tea he intends to sell for over $200 a cup.
An Yanshi, an entrepreneur in southwest China, grows the tea in mountainous Ya'an in Sichuan province using tonnes of excrement from panda bears living at nearby breeding centres. The first batch of panda dung tea will be sold in lots of 50 grams that will cost some 22,000 yuan ($3,500) each, a price An said makes it the world's most expensive tea. Most people use about 3 grams of tea per cup. An defended the steep price, saying he would channel profits from the initial batches into an environmental fund. Future batches would be cheaper, he added. "I thank heaven and earth for blessing us with this environmental panda tea," the 41year-old former teacher and journalist said at a weekend event The fertiliser made the tea a health boon, An said, because pandas only eat wild bamboo and absorb only a fraction of the nutrients in their food. And pandas make plenty of fertiliser. "They are like a machine that is churning out organic fertiliser." An said. "They keep eating and t h e y k e e p producing faeces." "Also, they absorb less than 30 percent of the nutrition from the food, and that means more than 70 percent of the nutrients are passed out in their faeces." After brewing the first pickings, An described the tea as fragrant and smooth. Some of his guests, however, were not impressed. "It's sold at such a sky-high price, perhaps this is just hype," said 49-year-old Li Ximing. ($1 = 6.3227 Chinese yuan)

to promote the tea. "I just want to convey to the people of the world the message of turning waste into something useful, and the culture of recycling and using organic fertilisers." Dressed in a panda suit to promote his tea, An invited a dozen or so guests to help handpick the first batch of tea at his plantation at the weekend.

"Batman" brings order to Slovak town

His utility belt might not be as well-equipped as the TV version and he hasn't had to fight Penguin's henchmen yet, but Zoltan Kohari has nailed the superhero look and grit needed to fight evil in the southern Slovak town of Dunajska Streda.
Dressed in his home-made, all-leather Batman costume with the bat symbol proudly displayed on his chest and pointy ears on his cowl, Kohari, 26, cleans the streets, helps old people out and calls the police when he sees something suspicious. "I have decided to do good for the people. I take care of order and help clean up the environment so we can keep living on this planet," There are some slight differences in the storylines of the real-life Kohari and fictional millionaire Bruce Wayne, the man behind the mask in Batman comic books, TV shows and films. For one, Kohari is a reallife person, whose path to the side of truth, justice and a tidy neighbourhood once strayed to the wrong side of the law. The trained house painter Kohari's Batman impersonation follows the emergence of a trend in the United States, where ordinary citizens began donning superhero costumes and performing public services in the wake of Hollywood films such as "Kick Ass" and Woody H a r r e l s o n ' s "Defendor", which tell the tale of "reallife" superheroes. Kohari says he never resorts to physical violence and some people in his town think he is a bit batty, but his neighbours said he is an honest and good man. "He's had a tough life but he is very dependable and we like him. He helps us out, keeps an eye on public order, and he is a hero for my son and his schoolmates," said Jana Kocisova, a mother of two who lives in a neighbouring apartment block. So what's next for the Slovak superhero? After tidying up and helping the elderly, Batman's next mission will be making sure bouncers at the local disco do not rough up visitors.

Colorado man buried under mound of pinto beans dies

A 56-year-old man was killed when he was buried under a 20-foot mound of pinto beans at a warehouse in eastern Colorado where he worked, police said.
Raymond Segura Jr. was pronounced dead at the Brush, Colorado, facility of the Kelley Bean Company after efforts to reach him alive were unsuccessful, Morgan County Undersheriff Dave Martin said. "We moved several tons of beans to get to him," Martin said in a telephone interview. Martin said emergency personnel were summoned to the site at 11:30 a.m. on reports of a worker trapped in a pile of loose pinto beans. Martin said dozens of rescue workers and even four inmates from the county jail spent an hour digging through a 20-foot high mound of the legumes to get to the trapped worker, but he was dead when crews reached him. Segura was a longtime resident of the area and had worked at the warehouse for between 12 and 15 years, Martin said. The cause of the accident, how the victim became trapped and the exact cause of death are under investigation, he added.

Nigeria's super rich are no strangers to conspicuous consumption, and there's no better way to flaunt your wealth than by buying a brand new European sports car.
German carmaker Porsche officially opened a new car dealership in the heart of Lagos' wealthiest district, Victoria Island, a place with one of the world's highest concentrations of millionaires. There are already dealerships specialising in Aston Martin and Lamborghini, but Porsche hopes to capitalise on a promise of providing sturdier vehicles that can cope with Nigeria's rough roads. Its presence is being seen as a vote of confidence in the West African nation's fast-growing economy. Porsche also plans to set up an operation in the capital Abuja, where roads are newly built - a better market for the 911 sports model - and where politicians are amongst the world's most highly paid. "The African continent, and in particular Nigeria, is of growing importance to us at Porsche," the company's Middle East and Africa head George Wills said, unveiling the new 911 model. High-end goods producers are increasingly targeting subSaharan Africa, as its economic growth starts to dwarf other continents and rich Western countries face a slowdown. Nigeria, Africa's second biggest economy, grew 7.68 percent in the last quarter of 2011, one of the fastest in the world. Two of Africa's top five richest men are Nigerian. "We're quite confident the numbers will be strong," a sales rep was quoted as saying in front of the new 911 sports car, after a Porsche official revved its engine for flashing cameras.

dustbin. The car park at the Porsche show rooms has several models. "It's a nice car," said employee Mohammed Ibrahim, as he hosed down a chrome coloured Cayenne and shined it to a sparkle with a cloth. On his 20,000 naira a month salary it would take him 125 years to afford one if he didn't buy anything else. "God might give me a car like this one day. He can do that, if he wants to. He can do anything," he said, grinning. BIG MEN AND MOTORS Sandwiched between the lagoon that led Portuguese sailors to name this city 'Lagos' and the Atlantic, Victoria Island is a place of fund managers in fine woollen suits and oil oligarchs. The faces of glamorous women smile from billboards advertising mobile phones. Luxury 4x4s are everywhere. But it has scant electricity, most roads are sandy, potholed and patrolled by beggars in rags. Poor drainage means they flood - in the rainy season, fishermen sometimes traverse them by canoe, raising doubts about the practicality of sports cars like a 911. Other luxury brands have however made it big in Nigeria. It is a significant African market for LVMH. Most bars can get you Moet & Chandon champagne or Hennessy brandy, which women sip next to their Louis Vuitton handbags. The "Auto Lounge" in Victoria Island lets you enjoy an expensive drink overlooking a garage of Aston Martins. Paris-based magazine Jeune Afrique last year placed Nigeria at the top of Africa's champagne consumers, guzzling 593,000 bottles in 2010, 50 percent more than richer rival South Africa. The curator of Zurich's zoo said that while the zoo did not keep dolphins, it opposed a ban and favoured clearer guidelines on keeping aquatic mammals. Swiss non-profit group Ocean Care, which has pursued criminal proceedings against Connyland over the dolphin deaths, also welcomed the Swiss parliament's decision.

Swiss lawmakers support ban on dolphin aquariums

Switzerland's lower house voted to ban the keeping of dolphins in zoo aquariums or for entertainment purposes following the deaths last year of three dolphins at a Swiss theme park.
The surprise vote was welcomed by Antoine Goetschel, Switzerland's first "animal lawyer", who urged the upper house to endorse the ban. "I am pleased that keeping animals in this kind of way is viewed across party lines as unacceptable and to be banned. He is seen as a legal advocate for pets, livestock and wildlife in the canton of Zurich. The vote follows criticism from animal rights activists following the death of three dolphins last year at Connyland, a water theme park in Lipperswil, Switzerland. Connyland has rejected local veterinary officials' finding that the deaths were linked to antibiotics the dolphins were being treated with, and maintained

ALL ABOUT BALI

Singaraja, Bali - A Relaxing Slice of Paradise
Singaraja is the old colonial capital of Bali. It is the capital city of the regency of Buleleng. It is quite simply - cool. Figuratively and literally.
I always think of it as much cooler physically than other areas of Bali although I have absolutely no scientific data to back up that assertion. My house is definitely cooler when the wind is blowing in off the ocean but who says we can't be relative. This is the postmodern era, correct? Singaraja is a fairly good-sized city (which is a good way of saying that I'm not sure what the population actually is, although some friends that recently visited told me that according to a guide book it was 50,000) with wide streets and a lot of friendly folks. They have been repairing things in Singaraja over the past few years and it definitely has a clean, open feel to it. The main shopping area is on Jalan Diponegoro and Jalan A. Yani. There is not much here in the way of tourist goods (masks, paintings, jewelry) but you can buy supplies for your stay in the north here - juice, boxed milk, diapers, toilet paper, cigarettes and beer much cheaper than if you buy them in the tourist area to the west. Singaraja has a good doctor for expats who charges rather high prices but if you're really sick and you want someone to speak English to then Dr. Gina is your woman. Friendly, good old-fashioned care. What is it that is unique about this place, or what is it that draws me to it? Maybe it's because Singaraja isn't really all that unique - just another friendly town in Indonesia where you can bop around, find some things that you need, meet some fine folks and live your life the way that you want without interference from people that are convinced that they know how you should live your life. The new government has given folks some hope and we all expect them to continue on with repairing the economy and staying out of people's daily activities. The Singaraja area is the home of Lovina Beach, of the well known, but as the new tourist literature proclaims, hidden treasures of Bali. In spite of the fact that my friend has this promotional material sitting in his restaurant, I happen to agree with it. That doesn't mean to come crowding up here. We wouldn't want Robert Redford to bring the Sundance here or to have Californians start building summer homes, but it is nice... Lovina Beach is actually a collection of villages that are lumped together under the general name of Lovina which actually is a village. Other villages in the Lovina area include Kalibukbuk, Anturan, and Tukadmungga. The farther you get from Lovina on the Singaraja side, the quieter things get. While Lovina is laid back compared to Kuta, Kalibukbuk, Anturan and Tukadmungga are positively restful. Of course, it can be a bit too quiet for some staying out in Anturan or Tukadmungga so they can just take a short bemo ride or a three K walk up to Lovina to sample some of the night life. While I have been going on about Lovina, I actually spend most of my time away from home over at Anturan or Tukadmungga. A number of homestays and small hotels have cropped up in the past few years in this area. The old popular hotel after years of being abandoned is now open under new management - it's called Villa Agung. Homestay Sri is still there after a number of years. Homestay Sri is also under new management. This Sri is also being run by foreigners. This is the big thing now in the area. The Westerners have moved in and either bought, built or leased hotels on the beach. There's getting to be less and less Balinese businesses these days. So if you want to actually relax on your vacation to Bali, you should try visiting northern Bali. Plan on spending a week or so to get to know the place. You won't be disappointed.

Perth musician dies during gig

Tributes are flowing in for a Perth musician who died during a gig in Inglewood at the weekend.
Vocalist Gary Cornell, 34, was performing with his band Pyramid of the Coyote at the Civic Hotel on Saturday night when he collapsed on stage. Band member and friend of Cornell Kely Barcia confirmed the lead singer's death on Facebook. "Gary has in fact passed away last night, second song into our set at the Civic Den," he wrote. "Gary collapsed on stage and despite everyone's best efforts to revive him using CPR and the ambulance team taking Gary to Royal Perth Hospital, he was unable to be revived. "There is no specific reason given for his passing but it is suspected Gary experienced a suspected cardiac arrest." Barcia described Cornell as a great performer, singer, songwriter, drummer, musician and event promoter and a great mate to all who knew him. "(Cornell) had a sincere lust for living life to its fullest and a great genuine person with a warm and very human side," he wrote. "Our hearts go out to his family and those closest to him." Mr Barcia thanked the band's supporters and staff at the Civic Hotel, particularly two employees who "performed CPR relentlessly, not giving up on Gary despite what was to be an impossible mission with no positive outcome". Hundreds of tributes were posted on Cornell's Facebook page. Gary touched everyone's heart with his genuine goodness, he was an awesome bloke so genuine and giving, one said. Such a shock. A great mate and all around top bloke. Will be truly missed, said another. RIP Gary, enjoy the big jam session in the sky Your legacy will live on. You gave life and music your all. A police spokeswoman confirmed officers were called to RPH in relation to the sudden death but said it was not being treated as suspicious. A report will be prepared for the coroner.

Free Kittens!
A pretty little girl named Suzy was standing on the sidewalk in front of her home. Next to her was a basket containing a number of tiny creatures; in her hand was a sign announcing FREE KITTENS. Suddenly a line of big white cars pulled up beside her. Out of the lead car stepped a tall, grinning woman. "Hi there little girl, I'm Prime Minister Gillard. What do you have in the basket?" she asked. "Kittens," little Suzy said. "How old are they?" asked Julia. Suzy replied, "They're so young, their eyes aren't even open yet." "And what kind of kittens are they?" " Labor supporters," answered Suzy with a smile. Julia GILLARD was delighted. As soon as she returned to her car, she called her PR chief and told him about the little girl and the kittens. Recognizing the perfect photo op, it was agreed that the prime minister should return the next day; and in front of the assembled media, have the girl talk about her discerning kittens. So the next day, Suzy was again standing on the sidewalk with her basket of "FREE KITTENS," when another motorcade pulled up, this time followed by vans from ABC, Channel 7, SBS, Ten & Nine. Cameras and audio equipment were quickly set up, then Gillard got out of her limo and walked over to little Suzy. "Hello, again," she said, "I'd love it if you would tell all my friends out there what kind of kittens you're giving away." "Yes mam," Suzy said. "They're Liberals." Taken by surprise, the prime minister stammered, "But... But.. Yesterday, you told me they were Labor supporters." Little Suzy smiled and said, "I know. But today, they have their eyes open."

Threatening letter suspect appears in court

A man suspected of sending about 100 threatening letters to members of Congress and the media last month made his first appearance in federal court in Washington state, where a judge ordered him sent back to Oregon.
The mass mailing of the menacing envelopes, which were postmarked in Portland and contained a white powdery substance later determined to be harmless, triggered a security alert on Capitol Hill and among several media outlets. Authorities have yet to discuss a possible motive for the letters. A federal indictment returned last week against Christopher Lee Carlson, 39, charged him with one count of mailing a threatening communication to a member of Congress and one count of mailing a letter threatening to use a biological weapon to a U.S. senator. If convicted of both offenses, Carlson, who authorities said resided in the vicinity of Portland and its Vancouver, Washington, suburbs, faces a combined maximum sentence of 15 years in prison. He was arrested at his home. Unshaven and wearing a white T-shirt and Khaki pants for his brief court appearance in Tacoma, Carlson acknowledged that he understood the charges and waived his right to an identity hearing. Judge Richard Creatura then signed an order of transfer that will keep Carlson in detention until he is handed over to authorities in Oregon. No further proceedings were immediately scheduled in the case. The threatening letters began showing up on Capitol Hill and in offices of lawmakers. A number of media organizations and television shows, including The New York Times, National Public Radio and "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart," also received such mail. In 2001, in the wake of the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, deadly anthraxlaced letters were sent to several news organizations and Senate offices. Five people were killed and 17 sickened from those letters, which ultimately were traced by federal investigators to a lone U.S. Army scientist

Thieves evade lasers to nab Italian shipwreck's bell

Underwater thieves have evaded an array of laser systems that measure millimetric shifts in the Costa Concordia shipwreck a n d 2 4 - h o u r surveillance by the Italian coast guard and police to haul off a symbolic booty - the ship's bell.
The giant cruise liner capsized off the Tuscan island of Giglio after hitting a rock on January 13, killing at least 25 people. Seven people are still unaccounted for. Prosecutors have accused Captain Francesco Schettino of causing the accident by bringing the multi-storey Costa Concordia, which was carrying more than 4,200 passengers and crew, too close to the shore. Now prosecutors have opened an investigation to find out who filched the modern-day Titanic's bell. Judicial sources said thieves nabbed the ship's bell more than two weeks ago from one of the decks of the Costa Concordia, which is submerged in 8 meters (26 feet) of water. Investigators suspect more than one person was involved in stealing the heavy bell, etched with the ship's name and 2006, the year it was christened. Ships bells were traditionally used to signal half-hour intervals in a fourhour watch. "I can only guess that someone took it as a sort of morbid memento," Giglio's mayor, Sergio Ortelli, said. "In my mind, the missing bell is of no importance. We have the ship's statue of the Madonna in our church, and that for us has much more symbolic meaning." Divers recovered the meter-tall plaster statue of the Madonna in January from the ship's chapel and gave the statute to the parish priest of Giglio.

The Eagles expected to have a clearer idea of how long Nicoski would have to spend in rehabilitation once the surgery was completed. He is the second Eagles forward to be struck down by a major injury in the pre-season, with Mark LeCras already out for the year with a serious knee injury. Nicoski and LeCras were two of West Coast's top three goal-kickers last season.

Dear Martha, I have recently moved to Bali from Holland. I love the life style and spend most afternoons sitting on the beach enjoying the beautiful sunsets & a few cold beers. There are some lovely people down there that serve me cold drinks. I have met a group of ex-pats that enjoy doing the same thing. I enjoy their company but they seem to complain about the price of things and talk about their other friends behind their backs, so rudely. I find the older men are the worst. None of them can seem to find any good in anyone or anything. I don't like that they do this. What should I do as I enjoy going to the beach, meeting new people & watching the sunset each day? Rita Dear Rita, I suggest you find another beach and new friends. Your friends here obviously don't know how to relax and enjoy life without hurting someone else. They are rude people. Move on dear.
If you have any questions for Martha please email to martha@kutaweekly.com

His motives touched at the core of why football matters so much. He wanted his son to one day come to the MCG with his son to barrack for the mighty Dees. If he expressed one moment of resentment toward the illness that he knew would claim him, it was that he wouldn't live to be there with them. Stynes saw t w o m o r e Christmases than medical opinion allotted. He waged bloody war against the aggression of cancer. He routinely left hospital to sit with the Demon faithful behind the goals at the MCG. His presence inspired. I t a l s o ensured football had the chance to tell Stynes what he meant to it. There would be no regrets. No sentiment left unexpressed. Stynes liked to tell the story against teammate and media personality Garry Lyon who confessed that he didn't like many people but he loved Jim. concept with the protein source where we've tested toxicity, meat quality... we actually have an (animal feed) product which is better than what we currently have," said Elsje Pieterse, an animal scientist at the University of Stellenbosch and one of the project's pioneers. "Our fish sources are not renewable ... But this is much cheaper than fishmeal in the end, it is better protein source because it is healthier with no anti-nutrients," Pieterse said. She added the product was totally renewable and natural, as maggots were known as nature's sweepers, able to vacuum up bacteria. Maggots have been used in some medical procedures to clean up infected or dead tissue from wounds. AgriProtein Technologies was also conducting research for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in using the wasp-like Black Soldier fly to clean up pit latrines in African slums. The experiment is seen having multiple benefits: Black Soldier flies lay their eggs on human excrement, and their larvae feed off this, leaving an odourless residue that can be used for fertiliser. The larvae can also be commercialised as protein, in the same way as house fly maggots. "The idea being that the small entrepreneur can make a third of his money off the municipality by cleaning up the shit in the slum, a third of his money from larvae and a third of his money from fertiliser," said Drew.

A city enriched by the love of Jim Stynes

Jim Stynes remembered not only as a great footballer but a man who leaves an incredible legacy on his adopted city of Melbourne.
He was the adopted son of a city, its indigenous game and the oldest club that bore its name. He enriched the town through his determination to change the lives of its most vulnerable inhabitants. He redefined the code, becoming its best and most e n d u r i n g p l a y e r, opening its mind and removing its borders. And he saved his football club for his children's children, providing it with a will and a way at its most susceptible. I n h i s premature departure he united Melbourne one last time. In grief. And in thanks for the many blessings that was the life of Jim Stynes. His story might have been the butt of every Irish joke you'd ever heard and some that were yet to be written. The teenage Gaelic footballer imported to play Australian Rules, the game he'd never seen. The Irish Experiment could have ended in his first season when he wandered across the mark of Hawk Gary Buckenara at the climax of the 1987 Preliminary Final. A mistake born out of naivety that cost Melbourne a place in the Grand Final. His spirit was stronger than to be crushed by such failure. Instead, four years later he had come not only to learn, but master this most foreign game. His ruck work and pure athleticism carried him to the AFL's highest individual honour, the Brownlow Medal. He amassed a recordequalling four best and fairest awards with Melbourne and was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame not because of his pioneering spirit but his brilliance on the field. His skill was matched by a freakish durability. Injury couldn't cruel him. Broken bones, torn muscles, midweek surgery. He came to defy the medics and

Maggots are Turf over Surf animal feed alternative

Families tucking into a Sunday dinner of roast chicken or pork may not relish the idea of animals fattened on maggots.
But one British entrepreneur in South Africa believes that maggots, the wriggling larvae of the common house fly (Musca Domestica), is a viable protein-rich alternative to make animal feed. A large part of the feed used today is fishmeal and depends on diminishing global fish stocks. D a v i d D r e w, managing director of A g r i P r o t e i n Technologies, plans to set up in South Africa the world's first large-scale fully commercial factory producing "Magmeal", an organic and sustainable replacement for the fishmeal currently used to fatten up chickens and pigs. "By 2050, at the current rates that we are using fishmeal, we will need two more planets' oceans to feed ourselves. The world's population is also e x p a n d i n g exponentially, with India and China helping drive poultry, beef and pork consumption," His existing test fly farm operates simply - flocks of flies contained in special containers lay eggs which turn into larvae after three days. Millions of teeming maggots are immersed in abattoir blood and feed on it to fatten up. They are later washed and harvested when fully grown at around 12 mm, before being dried, milled and pelleted for animal feed. "What's been helping us is the price of fishmeal is rising, it is a scarce resource. This is not some environmental tree-hugging nonsense, this is exactly as it is," Drew said at the Mariendahl experimental farm, about 45 km (27 miles) north of Cape Town where the maggot test factory is located.

personify the Monty Python adage "it's just a flesh wound." He played every match for 11 years and set the consecutive record sequence at 244. At the end of 264 games his legacy would echo through the generations. It is there in the words of Fijian-born Nic Naitanui. The West Coast ruckman moved to hail the man with a champion's heart: "Jimmy Stynes, if it wasn't for you, blokes like myself from a different background wouldn't be in the AFL." Whatever debt he felt to Melbourne he repaid when the country's oldest football club teetered for not only relevance

He added AgriProtein wanted the fully commercialised maggot factory to be on line at the end of next year. The plant would consume 65,000 litres of blood a day, feeding 100 tonnes of maggots and producing 20 tonnes of "Magmeal". International partners were being sought for the $8 million maggot factory, with a similar manufacturing facility planned for Germany afterwards, Drew said. "We've done the proof of

Hasler wants clarity on head shot ruling

Canterbury coach Des Hasler has urged the Australian Rugby League Commission to make a ruling to define what constitutes a fair tackle and dangerous contact with the head.
Hasler is still upset at the judiciary's decision to suspend Bulldogs back rower Frank Pritchard following a careless high tackle on Penrith's David Simmons in round one, but allowing Warriors winger Manu Vatuvei to escape punishment for a similar offence against Parramatta's Willie Tonga last week. Prop Aiden Tolman was cleared by the match review committee after being put on report for a high shot against the Warriors on Sunday, as was Wests Tigers' Adam Blair for an incident involving St George Illawarra's Jason Nightingale last Friday. However, Dragons forward Jeremy Latimore was ultimately the only player charged from the game, for a high shot on Benji Marshall, an offence that the officials failed to pick on the night. Tigers coach Tim Sheens said last week he did not know where he stood with referees and the judiciary after Blair was the only player punished by the officials from a game that contained at least three head-high tackles that led to penalties. Hasler said he was relieved Tolman had been cleared, but said the decision was a clear indication that referees and match review committee were not on the same page. "(The decision) could have gone either way the way it's been going," Hasler said on Tuesday. "It just goes to prove a point that there's a general lack of

Swiss superstar Roger Federer is setting his sights on more grand slams, after winning his t h i r d - s t r a i g h t tournament on Monday in Indian Wells.
The 16-time grand slam winner had to fight off a cold and a strong field to capture his fourth Indian Wells title. "Well, naturally I love winning tennis tournaments, especially when you put in all the hard work and the sacrifice of playing a lot of matches before this to make sure I get some momentum and confidence going," Federer said after beating John Isner 7-6 (9-7) 6-3 in the decider. "But I will push for one more in Miami, and then I'll probably have to take a week off or so and then I will manage my schedule all the way through to the French Open." Many were starting to write Federer off last season when he turned 30 and his game dropped off slightly. Last year was the first time since 2002 that Federer did not win at least one grand slam title. But age is just a number for Federer. "Some people don't understand how you can play tennis at 30-years-old which is shocking to me because normally that's still when you're young enough to play some of your best tennis," Federer said. "I think I'm showing that since I turned 30 in August last year. That's basically when my run began. "But at the end of the day, it doesn't matter what people say." Federer said his biggest wish this year was to win a gold medal at the London Olympics. But he also wants to some day reclaim the world number one ranking. "I said it loud and clear that it's not right now a goal for me in the short-term because I can't be world number one because Novak (Djokovic) has played amazing these last 12 months. "So right now that's not even on top of my head. I'm just happy how well things are going, and I will try to use that momentum to win more tennis matches."

towards victory. But three tries in 14 minutes, including a double to Michael Oldfield, dragged the Sea Eagles back into the contest - the Sharks eventually hanging on to break a 10-game losing run. Oldfield grabbed his second two minutes later as the Sea Eagles chanced their arm, but two late opportunities ended with fumbles as Manly fell short in the comeback bid. Sharks coach Shane Flanagan admitted to some nervous moments late in the game. "I was about to jump off the back of the grandstand," he said. "Seriously, I had nightmares of last year - we led 13-0 with about 10 minutes to go and they got us after the bell. "I was just hoping the football gods weren't that cruel tonight." Sharks skipper Paul Gallen revived memories of his heroics from last year's second State of Origin clash when he was again shifted into the front row, producing 30 runs for an astonishing 259 metres to go with 35 tackles in an inspired display. Of his skipper's performance, Flanagan said: "Is anyone surprised? I'm not surprised, I know he's got a huge motor. "He was back to his best tonight ... we're lucky to have him." Without a win since round 18 last year, it looked like being another frustrating night for the 8,652 fans who braved the Shark Park wet when Nathan Gardner spilled the ball as he dived for the try-line after just six minutes. Cronulla went on the attack again when Williams was put on report, and Jayson Bukuya got the home side on the board when he carried five defenders over the line. Gardner made amends for his earlier miss when he capitalised on a clever Gallen offload, and when Ben Pomeroy crossed just after the half hour, the Sharks were up 16-0 and the Sea Eagles had completed just five sets. Todd Carney nailed a field goal on the half-time siren which proved crucial later on, but there was little indication of the frantic finish that was to ensue as the Sharks retained control of proceedings.
