A YEAR IN THE LIFE OF

She arrived as if from outer space on a meteorite blasted through infinity. Like all the best pop stars do, of course. Unavoidable, unfathomable, inarguably unique, she bestrode the musical genres (pop, r&b, hip-hop, jazz) like the star of a show called Attack of the 50 Foot Art-Pop Diva, legs the length of industrial pipeline and pops most dynamic hair. Before her debut single was even released in November 2010 - the filthy, fabulous, heroically insolent hip-hop pastiche Do It Like A Dude she was a word-of-mouth phenomenon, tastemakers and public alike crammed inside Camdens Proud Gallery in October 2010 (hundreds more were locked outside), craning for a glimpse of this young girl from Essex theyd heard about, the one with the scorching, astonishing, three-octave vocals which could microwave your head. Shortly afterwards, Do It Like A Dude sashayed to No.2 on iTunes before radio had even played it. Awards seemed suddenly inevitable: topping the BBC Sound of 2011 poll, winning The Critics Choice Award at The Brits 2011. By late Spring 2011, her second single, the irresistible, zeitgeist-defining Price Tag had reached No.1 in 19 countries and Jessie J had just turned 23 years old. Id been around for six years, so I was emotionally prepared, she reminds us. I was signed at 17. When my mates were out clubbing every night, I was in the studio. When they were doing their prom thing, I was touring the world. Like all the best pop stars, Jessie Js overnight success has taken a lifetime fraught with obstacle (at almost gallows humour level) and staggering determination to overcome them. Born Jessica Cornish in Redbridge, London in 1988 with a congenital heart defect, the beta-blockers she took as a child turned her skin green and the cruel kids called her Alien. A natural born (loud) singer, she starred in Whistle Down The Wind in the West End aged 11, studied Musical Theatre at the celebrated Brit School and was signed to Gut Records at 17. On the cusp, then, of success, she suffered a minor stroke at 18 while Gut Records went bankrupt, having released none of her music. She didnt just solider on, she became through a publishing deal with Sony ATV - an internationally in-demand song-writer, penning songs for Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, Alicia Keys, Chris Brown and Miley Cyrus, the latter taking Party In The U.S.A to No.1 in the States. By 2008, still relatively unknown, she was support act to Chris Brown across America and Cyndi Lauper in the UK. As snatching victory from the jaws of defeat goes, shes the scarlet feather-plumed invincible Phoenix of pop. Im the kind of person who, you can knock me down, she smiles, tantalisingly, but I will get back up again.
Who You Are, her debut album released in February 2011 on Island Records, has sold three million copies worldwide. Her five global hit singles Do It Like A Dude (originally written with Rihanna in mind, inspired by the Barbados Barbarians Rude Boy), Price Tag, Nobodys Perfect, Whos Laughing Now, Who You Are have sold six million copies in total. Her videos, kaleidoscopic riots of lip spikes and hotpants, audacious attitude and cackling wit,

have inspired 300 million views on YouTube. These now culturally indelible songs not only redefine the sound of contemporary pop swaggering, poignant, funny, profound and always mint-cool fresh but come with unapologetic and rare sincerity, sonic self-help mantras for generational dilemmas, from bullying to insecurity to dangerous obsessing over the ching-cher-chingcher-ching. Jessie sees herself as half pop star, half therapist and to her devoted fans her Heartbeats (over a million Twitter followers, 2.5 million Facebook Friends) shes a toweringly positive role model. I just dont wanna write music thats throwaway, ever, she notes. She believes, simultaneously, in the dazzling lure of glamour, a dude in some ways, but also a girly girl, I wanna get dressed up and be creative and visual and make people think. A formidable can-do personality, even when she badly broke her foot in live rehearsals in London, pops special-force trouper carried on regardless, storming Glastonbury, V Festival and The Big Chill (warming up for Kanye West) from a golden throne before further festival dates were forcibly cancelled. Since April 2011, her cluster-bomb success has exploded across the U.S.A, selling one million copies of Price Tag and appearing on Americas biggest shows, from Jay Leno to Jimmy Kimmel, Ellen to MTVs VMAs. Back in Britain, she effortlessly straddled the TV spectrum between Later With Jools Holland and Britains Got Talent (sporting delicious Union Jack lips), appeared as guest mentor on the mighty X Factor and beamed from the covers of the nations biggest magazines, from Q to Glamour. Her collaborations, too, spanned the globe, tracks with techno-whizz David Guetta, to Up with No.1 singer-songwriter James Morrison in the U.K. The kid from Essex with the spooky skin is now celebrated as otherworldly as all the best pop stars are, in the oldschool theatrical tradition. Shes like an amazing, cool, fit alien, marvels James Morrison. Shes like a Ferrari that you have to take down, woah, dont go to fifty yet. Shes a hell of a woman! This expanded version of Who You Are, released exactly 12 months after Do It Like A Dude redefined the 21st Century pop star, comes with four stunning bonus tracks: Domino, My Shadow, Laser Light (produced by David Guetta) and an acoustic version of fan favourite Technology. Shes a hell of a woman alright, across the cultural sphere, her awards alone in 2011 showcasing her vast crossover appeal, from Glamours Woman Of Tomorrow to Capital FMs Best Role Model In Pop to the Stonewall Awards Entertainer Of The Year. She also led the nominations at the Q Awards and was mostnominated artist in a single year for the coveted MOBO Awards (in its entire 16 year history). In 2011 she proved, even when shes forced to stop, she is actually, well, unstoppable. Jessie J says that when she starts to sing she feels almost like a Superhero. Certainly, she looks and sounds like a supernatural being, beamed from a different dimension where the glittering pop stars live. But, she adds (as if we could forget) my music is very real. Sylvia Patterson, September 2012.
