Leslie Walbert Digital Video Project-Planning Activity Spring 2012

Standards: 4.1.2 Read widely and fluently to make connections with self, the world, and previous reading. 4.1.5 Connect ideas to own interests and previous knowledge and experience. The target audience for this video are preschool students (ages 3 to 4) because it will inform them of the many possibilities and opportunities they have to enjoy reading in their school. Parents of students and faculty/staff at my school could also be an audience member to help show parents and fellow staff members how preschool encourages the exploring of books at an early age and how they can too in their own home environment. The cultural background of the audience is poverty level to lower class. The students in my class, who will be featured in this video, have been assessed in Print Concept Skills. About 65% of my students are proficient, 20% are approaching, and 15% are Below grade level. My students have a background of visiting the school media center weekly to hear a read aloud, visiting our own classroom's library center, being able to find some books located in each learning center, and passing by the lending library cart when they come in to school (this occurs every other Tuesday). The learning style of my students mostly include tactile learners and visual learners, however, there are a couple of students that I would also classify as auditory. The motivation of the students per ARCS model are: Attention: The students attention will be captured by explaining to them that we are going to show them all the different ways we use books throughout the day at school and how we need to read more books at school and with their parents at home and we are going to show them how to do that! Relevance: After the student's attention has been captured, I will show the students how they will see more of a variety of books will be placed in the classroom around different learning centers and how they will be able to have opportunities to take books home to read with their parents. Confidence: Students will gain confidence by feeling like they can relate to the books that they look at and select and when they can see examples of how they are going to be able to look through more books each day in their classroom. Satisfaction: Students will see that they are going to have multiple opportunities to select books, especially books that relate to their interests, and be more inclined to use more opportunities to sit down and practice reading a book.

Objective for presentation: After viewing a video to promote multiple opportunities to read, the preschool students will use the media center to read books for pleasure.
