Institute of Politics Study Group with former United States Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings: Participant, Cambridge, MA Participated in the former Education Secretarys dialogues on No Child Left Behind, standards-based education, testing, and the future of American education, which culminated in a panel discussion: the politics of education with Michelle Rhee, Jeb Bush, and Secretary Spellings. 2010. Board of Education: Member, Honolulu, HI Represented states 180,000 public (including charter) school students on Board of Education, which oversees the tenth largest and only centralized school district in the nation. Committees on Curriculum, Budget, Legislation, and Ad Hoc on Special Programs. Advocated revision of new graduation requirement guidelines, expansion of student credit opportunities, improved communication between state department and schools, systemic accountability, and informational transparency. 2009-2010. Hawaii State Student Council: Member, Ad Hoc Committee on Reorganization Chair, Honolulu, HI Discussed with student representatives from each school district issues facing students in schools. Advocated (lobbied) at state legislature voting rights for the Board of Education student member, a reduction in the minimum requisite vote for the adoption of a new school policy in the HSTA contract from 75% to 66% (successfully), student evaluation of courses and teachers, support for the Race to the Top program.
