HISTORY:

It is a known fact that lighting is a major source of electric energy consumption, according to
Professor Fary Z. Ghassemlooy, University of North Umbria, 1/3 of global consumption of electricity is spent on lighting purposes. About 10 years ago, researchers came to the realization that WLED devices could also
be used for wireless communication purposes because LEDs rends to be considerable cheaper than Radio

Frequency (RF) devices, It does not generate RF contamination, replacing RF device will reduce interference in RF band and a large amount of energy can be saved.

INTRODUCTION:

Visible Light Communication (VLC) is a method by which Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) are used to transmit data using visible light as a transmitting medium. With the increasing usage of data over mobile phones and other wireless devices, spectrum shortage appears to be a real problem for which VLC can be offered as a potential solution.

Specially designed electronic devices generally containing a photodiode receive signals from such light sources, although in some cases a cell phone camera or a digital camera will be sufficient. The image sensor used in these devices is in fact an array of photodiodes (pixels) and in some applications its use may be preferred over a single photodiode. Such sensor may provide either a multi-channel communication or a spatial awareness of multiple light sources.

WORKING:

VLC data transmission process consists of three main parameters, a source, a channel and a receiver.White light LEDs typically use two methods to generate white light. Red, Green and Blue devices are combined in a single package and white light is generated by mixing them in appropriate proportion. This model is a typical indoor environment with 4 LED arrays provide. A receiver is placed at a communication plane approximately 1m from the floor, and light from the arrays propagates to the receiver, providing a communications channel.

APPLICATIONS:
VLC technology can be used in a number of applications or end user segments like wireless networking, intelligent traffic management systems, home networking system, power-line communication and underwater communication. Some of the future applications of VLC are given below: VLC in combination with Power-line Communication. Image sensor communication. Vehicle to vehicle communication.
