Conference Audience: Professionals who work with children and families including: physicians, nurses, social workers, mental health counselors, early interventionists, psychologists, educators, medical and juvenile justice professionals. Conference Objectives: Upon completion of this conference participants will be able to: Identify Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and discuss how they impact health and development throughout the lifespan Discuss current medical research on trauma and neglect and explain its impact from neuro developmental perspective Explain how traumatic experiences impact infants and young children and describe the implications for clinical services, child welfare agencies and courts Describe the different epistemologies that relate to how Tribal People conceptualize the world and identify how these impact understanding of trauma Recognize the consequences of untreated trauma on individuals and society at large Use effective strategies for creation and implementation of trauma informed system of care that leverages stakeholders input and cross systems collaboration to infuse and sustain a trauma informed perspective The breakout sessions will offer a variety of options for additional education and will allow participants to: Explore the implications of using attachment based assessment principles and intervention models in clinical programs serving high-risk families Recognize the effects of injury where blood doesnt flow and describe how diagnostic processes can hinder healing/ treatment Differentiate common characteristics of inflicted versus accidental trauma in children Describe the importance of designing an individualized treatment plan for consumers while working to promote recovery Interpret the potential benefit of adopting a trauma informed approach to working with human service clients Apply the concept of Secondary Traumatic Stress and identify the connection between chronic exposure to traumatic stress and our physical, emotional and mental well being

Robert Anda, M.D., M.S. is current Senior Scientific Consultant to the CDC with Carter Consulting. He played the principal role in the design of the ACE study and serves as its CoPrincipal Investigator. Bruce D. Perry, M.D., Ph.D. is the Senior Fellow of the ChildTrauma Academy and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Northwestern University School of Medicine in Chicago. Dr. Perry is the author, with Maia Szalavitz, of The Boy Who Was Raised As A Dog, a bestselling book based on his work with maltreated children and Born For Love: Why Empathy is Essential and Endangered, published in April, 2010. Neil Boris, M.D. is a Professor at Tulane University School of Medicine in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. His focus is on the social and emotional development of high -risk children under five years of age. His research has ranged from studying early intervention programs serving high risk families in the U.S. to capturing the impact of community based programs for orphans in Rwanda and Malawi. Eduardo Duran, Ph.D. has been working in Indian Country for 30 years. He has been instrumental in developing clinical theory and methods that integrate ancient traditional approaches with modern western strategies in an effort to make healing relevant to Native peoples. Ken McCann, M.D. is a board certified pediatrician. Dr. McCann has experience evaluating children of all ages for child physical abuse, child sexual abuse, child physical and medical neglect, and medical child abuse (formerly Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy).

Tonier Neen Cain lived on the streets for twenty nightmarish years. As Ms. Cain shares her story, audience members find themselves challenging their professional and personal beliefs. Her experience illustrates the consequences that untreated trauma has on individuals and society at-large, including mental health problems, addiction, homelessness and incarceration. Tim Grove, MSSW is the chief program officer at Integrated Family Services, St. Aemilian-Lakesides child welfare subsidiary. He was responsible for the implementation of St. Aemilian-Lakesides trauma informed care philosophy and practices, including developing the trauma informed care training curriculum and the seven essential ingredients definition of how best to understand and implement trauma informed care. Ann Leinfelder Grove, MSM is the Vice President of Strategy and Innovation for St. AemilianLakeside. She is the senior administrator responsible for the agencys trauma informed initiative across a wide service array including organizational culture and change management, program implementation, and advocacy and outreach to state and local stakeholders. Brenda Bash, M.S. serves as supervisor for Polk County Crisis & Advocacy Services. She is certified with the Iowa Coalition Against Sexual Assault as a sexual assault counselor and a trained mediator. Brenda has devoted her academic and professional career to serving those whose lives have been impacted by crime. She has conducted countless hours of public education in an effort to increase awareness and sensitivity toward individuals victimized by violent crime.
