ReportofresearchconductedattheAberdeenR&ECenter StephenLove WilliamBohl TomSalaiz

Introduction Withthenumeroustomatovarietiesavailablefromlocalnurseries,retailers,andseedcompany catalogues,itcanbechallengingforahomegardenertoselectavarietythatissuitedtothelocal climate,andwillfittheirneedsforenduse.AlthoughmanytomatoesvarietieswillgrowineastIdaho, littlewasknownabouttheiractualproduction.Inanefforttoprovidecurrentinformationabouttomato varietiessuitableforeastIdaho,avarietyfieldtrialwasconductedattheUniversityofIdahoAberdeen ResearchandExtensionCenter. Procedures TwentyseventomatovarietieswereevaluatedinafieldtrialattheUniversityofIdahoAberdeen ResearchandExtensionCenterin2007.Selectionofvarietiestestedwasbasedonretailerclaimsof earliness,recommendationsfrommarketgardeners,andhomeownerpreferencesasindicatedthrough arecentsurvey. Thetrialconsistedofthreereplicationswithfourplantsperplots.Plantswerespaced2feetapartin rowsspaced3feetcoveredwithblackplastic.TransplantswereproducedoncontractbyDaleandPat Palmer,localgreenhouseproducers.PlantsweretransplantedtotheplotsthelastweekofMay. Plotswerefertilizedusingapproximately80lb/AofNjustpriortoplanting.Thiswastheonlyfertilizer theplotsreceivedallseason.Plotswereusuallyirrigatedtwiceaweekwithabout0.7to0.9inches watereachtime. Thefirstharvestofeachplotbeganwhenapproximately10fruitwereripeineachofthethree replicatedplots.Subsequentharvestsweremadeweeklyuntilthetrialwaskilledbyahardfrostthelast weekofSeptember.Atharvest,fruitwerepicked,separatedintomarketableandunmarketable categories,counted,andweighed.InlateAugust,allvarietiesproducingripefruitwereenteredintoan informalpreferencetastetest. Informationpresentedforeachvarietyisbasedontheneedsofhomegardenersandsmallmarket gardeners.Emphasisisplacedonprovidinginformationaboutripeningpattern,growthhabit, appearance,andculinaryquality.Marketableyield,measuredinpoundsproducedperplant,isalso reported.

ResultsofEvaluation
Trialresultsarepresentedintwoforms.Thefirstisagraphthatsummarizestheharvestpatternsfor the27varieties(Figure1).TheearliestvarietieswerereadytoharvestthefirstweekofAugust.Alight frostthatdidnotterminateplantgrowthoccurredduringthesecondweekofSeptember,whichwas followedbyasecondlightfrostafewdayslater.AhardfrostonSeptember24killedtheplantsinthe trial,afterwhichonefinalpickingwascompleted. Thesecondpartofthisreportistheharvestdatawithadescriptionandapictureofeachvariety.The dataisalsosummarizedinTable1attheendofthisreport.Notallpictureswerefromtheactualtrial. Thosewiththefruitsittingonabluesurfacearefromthetrial.Thedatapresentedincludethe following:

MarketableYield Thisvalueistheproductivityofthevarietyandisreportedinpoundsperplant.Onlyripefruitthatwere freeofdefectsandsuitableforsaleinthemarketplacewereincludedinthiscategory.Itisasumofall fruitharvestedforallharvestdatesforeachvariety.Unripefruitremainedontheplantattheendof theseasonandaroughestimatewasmadeofthepercentageoftotalproductionwasnotpicked. MarketableCount Thenumberofmarketworthyfruitproducedandisreportedonaperplantbasis.Itisthesumfruit harvestedfromallharvestdatesandindicatesthequantityoffruityoumayexpectfromavariety. AverageWeight Averagefruitweight,expressedinouncesperfruit,wasdeterminedbydividingtotalmarketableyieldin ouncesbytotalmarketablecount. PercentMarketable Thisvalueisthepercentoffruitthataremarketworthyasmeasuredagainstthetotalproduction.A highvalueisindicativeofrelativelyfewdefectsand/orrotproblemsforavariety. AppearanceRating Asubjectiveratingofexternalfruitattractivenesswasmadeusingaratingscaleof1to10where10is theproverbialbestthereis.Thatis,therewerenodefectsorblemishes,andthefruitwastruetocolor andshapeforthevariety. TasteRating Thisvaluewasobtainedfrom16panelistswhotastedeachvarietyandratedthemforflavorona1to10 scale,where10isthemostflavorful.Notallvarietieswereavailablefortestingatthesametime,so somevarietieswerenotevaluated.Weconsideredevaluationoftheearlyvarietiesasbeingmost importantsosomeofthelatevarietiesthatdidnothaveripefruitwerenotincludedinthetastetest. GrowthHabit Growthhabitisanindicationofplantsizeandvigor.Thevarietiesweredividedintofourcategories usingdescriptionsthatarecommonfortomatovarieties.Theyare: ExtDet=Extremelydeterminatevarietieswithsmallvines,earlyfruitset,shortharvestperiod, andsometimesearlyplantdeath. ModDet=Moderatelydeterminatevarietieswithsmalltomediumvines,moderatelyearlyfruit set,andmoderateharvestperiod. ModInd=Moderatelyindeterminatevarietieswithmediumtolargevines,moderatelylatefruit set,andfairlylongfruitharvestperiod. ExtInd=Extremelyindeterminatevarietieswithverylargevines,usuallylatefruitset,andalong harvestperiod(iftheseasonallows).
