Nelson Thompson (1952 - 1986) The work of Nelson Thompson, his art and life remained more private than some of his contemporaries. He was employed as an art teacher and lecturer for many years, but he always exhibited on a regular basis. In his later years he held regular one-man shows in Auckland. His paintings are also held in the collections of the Fletcher Trust, Air New Zealand and Nestles. His work underwent huge changes between his early studies of the 1950s and his late acrylics of the 1980s. For more information see www.nelsonthompsonart.co.nz

Hope Vessel & Woman The current owners bought Hope Vessel & Woman in 1986 from an exhibition of paintings and prints by Patrick Hanly at RKS Art in Auckland. TJ McNamara reviewed the exhibition in the NZ Herald at the time, paying particular attention to this work: In Hope Vessel and Woman the vessel quits a dark coast with teeth to it, to move through Pacific blue and a column of fire towards the haven of an opulent woman figure, splendidly painted and given a glow by a halo of dots that in the hands of most painters would be simply crass but in Hanlys hands become radiant.

Bill Sutton (1917 - 2000) worked on the Landscape Elements series in the early 1970s whilst bringing The Four Seasons to completion. Both series responded to the Port Hills, with Landscape Elements evoking the fall of light and cloud shadows on the land. Art commentator Pat Unger observed of the series that Each work aptly captures the mood of the region through use of a colour-keyed system implying shadow passing over modelled form. Diagonals, criss-crossing and curving take light and the eye over the whole canvas in an astute show of controlled movement.

Ngaheke - The Widow The subject of this portrait is Perira te Kahikura, an Arawa Chieftainess. Charles Goldie called her Ngaheke - The Widow and she was one his more favoured subjects. She was from the Tuhourangi tribe, a branch of Arawa living at Whakarewarewa, Rotorua. He painted her many times from many different angles over a long period of time, this painting done in 1915. Then later there are several painted in the 1930s, with her hair cut short, but always with the same downcast pose, grieving for her lost husband. The techniques that Goldie developed and honed to create his paintings led in part to his ability to use the same subject in different ways. Most artists of his time used preliminary sketches to capture and remember their subjects before they put paint to canvas. Goldie, however, took a small half-plate camera with him on his visits to Rotorua and Taupo. He took photographs of his subjects which he then used to paint from. This early use of photography enabled him to paint many portraits of just a few favoured subjects and keep on painting them even when they aged, changed or died. A photograph he took of Ngaheke can be seen in CF Goldie, His Life & Painting by Alister Taylor and Jan Glen, 1977. The current owner says the painting was either given or sold to the grandmother of a friend of his by Goldies wife, Olive. He then purchased the painting from that friend around fifty years ago.

48 Frances Hodgkins River Pool, Somerset c1935 Watercolour Signed lower right Provenance: Wolseley Fine Arts, London; private collection, London 35 x 52cm $24,000 - $28,000
Its is most likely that Frances Hodgkins completed this painting in the mid 1930s. The subtle combination of pinks and blues is characteristic of the palette she developed during this period. The scene depicted is probably English social anthropologist Geoffrey Gorers cottage in Bradfordon-Tone, Somerset. Hodgkins returned regularly to the cottage after meeting Gorer in the late 1920s and she completed a series of paintings there over the following years.
In a letter to a friend on 1934 Hodgkins wrote of her method of painting whilst staying at the Gorer cottage as a combination of the natural and the imagined: I go out into the fields every day, among the red cattle, strike an attitude and paint a composite picture - a sort of wish fulfilment of a picture. (EH McCormick, Portrait of Frances Hodgkins, Auckland University Press, 1989)
