131 Exam PHY #2 The exam questions were all the same, but with dierent numbers.

To save publishing two answer keys I will write the numbers in the format pink/yellow for the color of the exam papers.

1. The three capacitors have values C1 = 10.0 F, C2 = 15.00/5.0 F, and C3 = 4.00 F. A 5.00 volt
battery is connected across the capacitor combination. a. (3 points) What is the equivalent capacitance as this arrangement? 1 1 C123 = C12 + C3 = 10.0/7.33 F where C12 = C1 + C2 and C12 = 6.00/7.33 F. 12 b. (3 points) What is the charge on each capacitor C1 , C2 , and C3 ? The capacitors C1 and C2 are in series so they will have the same charge. The voltage drop across that combination will be the same as across the battery: Q12 = C12 V12 = 30.0/16.7 C and Q1 = Q2 = Q12 . The charge on the third capacitor can be found by a similar procedure: Q3 = C3 V3 = 20.0 C. Four resistors are connected to a 6.00 volt battery. The resistor values are R1 = 100 , R2 = R3 = 75.0/50.0 , and R4 = 50.0/75.0 . c. (3 points) What is the equivalent resistance of this resistor network? 1 1 1 1 R1234 = R1 + R234 = 121/119 where R234 = R2 + R3 + R4 and R234 = 21/19 . d. (3 points) What is the voltage drop across and the current though R2 ? V The current from the battery by the equivalent circuit is Ieq = R1234 = 0.0496/0.0504 amps. Since R1 is in series with the battery, this is also the current through R1 . The resistor R1 is also in series with the combination R234 . The voltage drop across the combination will be V234 = I234 R234 = 1.06/0.945 volts. Using the eqivalent circuit, this will also be the V voltage drop across resistor R2 . The current through R2 will be I2 = R2 = 0.0141/0.0189 2 amps. e. (3 points) What is the power dissipated by R2 ? P = I2 V2 = 0.0149/0.0179 watts.

2. Consider the multiloop circuit below. The positive terminal of each emf source is already
labeled for you as are the currents. a. (3 points) Apply Kirchhos loop rule to three loops in this circuit. Be sure the loops are independent! Lower-left loop: 1 I1 R1 I2 R2 = 0 (1) Lower-right loop: 2 I3 R3 I2 R2 = 0 (2) Upper loop: 1 + I4 R4 2 = 0 (3) b. (1 point) Apply Kirchhos junction rule to the point marked a in this circuit. I1 + I3 = I2 (4) c. (9 points) Using the equations in parts a and b determine the currents I1 , I2 , I3 , and I4 . Use the following values for the batteries 1 = 18.0/36.0 volts and 2 = 36.0/54.0 volts and for the resistors R1 = 4.00 , R2 = 3.00 , R3 = 6.00 , and R4 = 9.00 . Using the equation labels as reference: Both exams: Equation (3) can be solved immediatly I4 = 1 2 R4 = 2.00 Solve amps. Pink: (4) for I3 : I3 = I2 I1 and substitute into (2) and simplify: 9I2 6I1 = 36 (5). This equation along with equation (1) give two equations for two unknown currents I1 and I2 . Take 3 times (1) and add to

(5) to get I1 = 1.00 amps. Solve (1) for current 2: I2 = 184I1 = 4.67 amps. Now use equation (4): I3 = 3.67 amps. 3 Yellow: Solve (4) for I3 : I3 = I2 I1 and substitute into (2) and simplify: 9I2 6I1 = 54 (5). This equation along with equation (1) give two equations for two unknown currents I1 and I2 . Take 3 times (1) and add to (5) to get I1 = 3.00 amps. Solve (1) for current 2: I2 = 364I1 = 8.00 amps. Now use equation (4): I3 = 5.00 amps. 3 d. (2 points) On the gure draw where you would place an ammeter and voltmeter to measure the current though and voltage drop across resistor R2 . The ammeter should be in series for R2 and the voltmeter should be in parallel with R2 . 3. Multiple Choice. Clearly circle the letter corresponding to the most correct response. 1. At the end of 10 ms its charge is half the nal value. The time constant for the process is about: e. 14 ms 3. A nichrome wire is 1 m long and 1 106 m2 in cross-sectional area. When connected to a potential dierence of 2 V, a current of 4 A exists in the wire. The resistivity of this nichrome is: d. 5 107 m 4. The capacitance of a parallel-plate capacitor can be increased by: d. decreasing the plate separation 5. If both the plate area and the plate separation of a parallel-plate capacitor are doubled, the capacitance is: c. unchanged 6. A charged capacitor stores 10 C at 40 V. Its stored energy is: e. 200 J 7. Suppose one has available: two sheets of copper a sheet of mica (thickness = 0.1 mm, = 6) a sheet of glass (thickness = 2 mm, = 7) a slab of paran (thickness = 1 cm, = 2) To obtain the largest capacitance, place between the two copper sheets: b. the mica 8. Four wires meet at a junction. The rst carries 4 A into the junction, the second carries 5 A out of the junction, and the third carries 2 A out of the junction. The fourth carries: d. 3 A into the junction 9. The resistance of resistor 1 is twice the resistance of resistor 2. The two are connected in parallel and a potential dierence is maintained across the combination. Then: b. the current in 1 is half that in 2 10. In the diagram R1 > R2 > R3 . Rank the three resistors according to the current in them, least to greatest. e. All are the same
