Neuropsychology September 09, 2010 Things to consider with recording brain activity: Temperal resolution; Spacial Resolutely; Invasiveness

Tools to directly view neuro-activity

(Direct measurements will have a HIGHER temperal (time) resolution:

QUICKER)
(Direct measurements will have a LOWER spacial (location) resolution:

CLEARER)
Direct EEG (Higher Temperal Res/Lower Spacial Res) Indirect fMRI/PET (Lower Temperal Res/Higher Spacial Res)

MRI or fMRI
Can be used to measure deoxyhemoglobin concertrations (BOLD signal) Resolution varies with strength of magnetic field Spatial resolution better than EEG, MEG and PET Shortcomings - Temperal resolution is not as good as EEG, MEG but better than PET - Claustrophobia (invasive) - Motion prevents beter spatial resolution

Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI)

Uses MRI technology to image water diffusion patterns in the brain
- Water diffuses better along axon - Provides a good method for imaging tracts in vivo Combine several different techniques to overcome the weakness of each.

Combine EEG and fMRI

- Good spatial AND temporal :-) Neuroimaging and neuropsychology work together to help neuropsychologist assess a patient.

"Seeing" isn't everything Neuropsychological Testing Why Testing? - Most diagnostic - Some descriptive - strengths and weaknesses - outline treatment implications - assess placement in vocational/school settings *************************************************************************

GUEST SPEAKER TALKING ABOUT GRAD SCHOOLS (Notes follow until

noted)

PSYD / PhD (Both Doctoral) - Status is

- PSYD - Clinical (Theropist/Clinicians/Psych testing)

Psy. D (Doctorite in Psychology)

More clinical experience Will cost more! (Be a T.A. to break down cost!) More clinically focused Put people in role of being therapist

Ph D (Doctorite in Philosophy)
- More research oriented Applying to Grad School Personal Statement: C.V. - Jobs relevant to psychology / Publications you were mentioned EXPECTED TO COME IN WITH EXPERIENCE - Experience from internships / Purchase offers Hawthrone C. Ernalls (???) (Speaker was secretary at Psych Office / Professor was in a 'befriending program' [wrote about it in her personal statement] / speaker suggest "group supervisions") Speakers Internship:

Doctorals programs require 1 year of internship at the end of the

program - Very difficult to apply to internships - One thing that can effect chances is APA credited program (American Psych Association evaluated programs make internship

placement much easier) Examples of APA programs: (LIU @ Brooklyn, Fordam (clinical, etc.), CW Post (Psy D/Ph D), Columbia. Clinical Ph. D want to see you published before accepted... looking for exceptional students Masters in Psych... Not much you can do with it (Cousling, working under a licensed Ph. D's.) GRE's looking for 600's scores. Some MA programs will pay for your Ph D, some just want yo' muh-fuggin' money "Academic Snobbery" ...good term.

Reality of grad school - Take out loans > $150+ (NO WAY to work FT and
go to school) >Don't try working PT... it's stupid and not worth it (Do some T.A. work/Live at home/Practor test) >

Speaker's Experience in Grad School

Brooklyn's Veteran's hospital - Lot's of therapy stubstance abuses/chronic pain/returning veterans/woman primary care/assessment [neuro/psychology testing] all under the watch of a licensed psychologist.

Externship - Brooklyn Veteran's - Mental health work Indivisuals/Groups/Assessments

2nd Externship - Neuro psych assessments for patiants with epilepsy

(Language - Boston naming test; Fluency test [F.A.S] - Name as many words as you can for 60 seconds), As many animals in 60 seconds. W.I.N.S - Wexler memory scale (memory)
