Media Evaluation 1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real

media products (The title of my magazine) For the titles of all three of my pages, (front page, contents page and double page spread) I used a big and bold white coloured font. I used this font as it was relevant to the theme of my magazine, which was the sky and the clouds. My titles are full white with a shade of black circling the letters this showed darker clouds through the letters. I juggled the font and shades using Photoshop and also used small shade lights that Photoshop offered in order to broadcast my fonts on a higher level. The idea of my title is completely different to other music magzines

NME shows over crowding of writing which stops the highlighting of the title/ brand.

Q magazine title is to cornered to be viewed as a title and could be overlooked as an side story

Analysing both the above magazines I decided that the brand/title of the magazine is very important as the magazine is to be recognized by the name of the brand. So for my magazine my title is highlighted at the top in a font size that is larger than others on the page. My title also stands out as it is not covered by any picture or writing on the page disabling it to be overlooked and my front page starts of with my title like every front page should start off. I used the name beats as it is musical and fits the name of my magazine perfectly as it is highly attractive when saying it or when looking at it. (2) Mis- en-scene of images The mis-en-scenes of my magazines were used at a high standard due to the fact of me creating the perfect setting needed to put out my story. This is due to me using a mixture of settings or more objects to create the perfect picture. It ranged from a graphitized white board with a speaker and guitar in front of it, the colour of the picture was changed to black and white showing the white board more as a wall and showing the whole picture setting being at a studio. This gave the picture a more high level rock and roll look getting my point across. My other two pictures used were again used to show the hard work of a dedicated artist. I showed this by setting the pictures in class room full of musical instruments again trying to portrait the music room as a setting and the picture being the artist playing one of the instruments. The settings of my pictures fit in well with the story of my image as the artist is smiling and looking straight in to the camera showing he has a lot to achieve and has a long journey ahead of him in the music industry. The two pictures of the artist have been lightened to connote his bright future. (3) (Costume and props) The costume and props I used are very casual for any music magazine. The reason I kept them casual was due to my topic of images being on rock and my artist being a normal person going in to the music industry. Thats why my artist was wearing casual common clothes whereas if he was a celebrity he would, for example: be suited up or in expensive

clothes. So I kept it simple because of the topic of my story. The props I used were the instruments my artist plays, e.g. guitar and the piano. (4) (People) The person or the main image of my magazine is of an individual whos an aspiring young adult who has a lot of dreams for his career. My individual is young and a fresh face and not too uptight about his appearance but is concentrating more on his career. Comparing my image of people, with other magazines, other magazines are more crowded with there images; usually due to the fact that they want to get in as many celebrities as possible. This could also be cause of the genre of there music magazine. So for Beats I kept it nice and simple due to the magazine being nice and simple and not to over crowded. I used the picture of a young adult artist, as my target audience is sixteen year olds and above and also for people that are interested in the genre of music that my magazine is portraying. My main reason of using this young artist is because the topic being quite simple is also very different. Its very rare that you hear about stories of young struggler this day, you would think that you do but the reality is that they have faded out. Now the most common news is about celebrities and more than music its about there personal lifes. So this person that I have used for Beats is very different. My young struggling adult is very different to the norm of today which makes him a very interesting topic. (5) (Title font and style) My font style is very different from other magazines as I think it stands out a great deal more. Beats was made on Photoshop, I used a large and bold font as I think it is very important for my title to stand out from the rest of the font. My title was playing the role of the clouds in my theme of the sky. So my font was round and stood out bright as my ground. My titles also have s shade of black around their edges connoting dark clouds. I made my font interesting as it will attract more of my target audience due to it being different and quite bright. I also used a tool on Photoshop to bring my title out of the page; this shows the title coming out of the page. I did this because whilst analysing other music magazines I realised the titles were very boring and mixed in with the other fonts of the page. My title is very attractive and will catch the readers attention from a long way away.

(6)(Written content) My written content is very common and basic. Its not complicated and easy for the reader to understand. My written content focuses on the young adult artists struggle and focuses on what he wants to achieve in his career. The reason for this topic is obvious as this is the story of the artist and as he is a new artist background history and future aspirations were needed to be mentioned. This type of information is usually always in a music magazine interview. I also put in questionnaires on celebrities and also true and false quiz. I used this type of written content to put together a more interesting magazine and within these small genres still have a large number of topics to view upon. This way the reader stays interested as he has different topics to read. E.g. if the reader does not have much interest in the young adult stories, he can read about a completely different genre (celebrities) (7) (Music genre and how your magazine suggests it) My music genre is based on Rock and Hip hop genres. The way I show these genres is through my front cover and the rest of my magazine. I accomplished this by portraying them both equally on the front cover. I published the story of the young rock artist on the front cover but also published hip hop side stories alongside it. Beats is a magazine that contains music information on the Hip Hop and Rock genres of music. I also used colour contrasts for my pictures. The main theme of the colours was black and white typical rock colours but the main theme for the magazine was a glamorous blue and white connoting the Hip Hop fraction of the magazine. My magazine is fairly different from other magazines as rock and hip hop are an unusual combination of genres to be put together but my decision was based on the results of my questionnaire. (8) (Layout) The layouts of my page were very predictable. The layout is very commons and is used in most magazines. My front cover proves this with the title being at the top of the front cover and a dominant image covering the majority of the page. Layout used for my contents page is unlike other contents pages due to the fact of my pages summary being on one side with a dominant image on the other. The magazines I focused on used there image as a camouflage in the background of the contents page rather than it being a separate image on the other side of the page. My pricing and barcode was unconventional as my pricing was at the top right hand corner of the page and barcode was at the bottom right hand

corner, realistically both pricing and barcode are placed at the bottom right hand side of the page. (9) (Contents) My contents page was slightly diverse than other contents pages that I looked at. I changed the lay out of the contents page which made it different. I used a dominant image beside my pages list to create a more attractive atmosphere on the page. I also used the image to keep the genres between Hip Hop and Rock equal. Due to my written content being more based on the Hip Hop side I decided to balance the magazine by creating more pictures that highlight the rock side of it.
