Training becomes real
FREMONT In February, Spectrum
Health Gerber Memorial employees had the
opportunity to test computerized manikins
that function in many ways like real people.
The manikins were provided by Region 6
ASPR/Homeland Security Bio Defense Net-
work. The manikins are reproductions of the
human body and can be programmed to re-
fect certain physical scenarios.
Lung and heart sounds can be replicated
and treated by the EMT or physician and the
manikin will in turn react to the treatment.
The manikins can be adjusted to simulate
several different physical problems. During
a two-day period over 100 Spectrum Health
Gerber Memorial employees and Life Am-
bulance EMT-P staff came to the hospital to
learn about and test the educational purposes
these manikins provide. The reviews were ex-
ceptional as everyone felt they could beneft
from the scenarios offered through these com-
puterized manikins.
This technology was made available
through a grant from the Fremont Area Com-
munity Foundation in Collaboration with
by Region 6 ASPR/Homeland Security Bio
Defense Network. Spectrum Health Gerber
Memorial is planning to send fve RN clini-
cal coordinators and four EMT -P from Life
Ambulance to the Region 6 Simulation Lab in
Muskegon.
They will be trained to operate these com-
puter manikins and bring education back to
Spectrum Health Gerber Memorial regularly.

students prepared solo, plus tests
on scales and sight-reading. Scores

NEWAYGO COUNTY For many children, their Big
Brother or Big Sister represents the only consistent, posi-
tive adult role model in their lives.
Locally, there are 24 kids, or littles, waiting to be
matched with a big. Research shows that mentoring
works. Kids with a Big Brother or Big Sister show real dif-
ferences in their personal and academic lives. They are
more confdent in their schoolwork performance, able to
get along better with their families and more than 50 per-
cent less likely to skip school.
You can make a difference in the life of a child and would
you believe you can do so simply by bowling? Bowlapaloo-
za brings teams of fve bowlers together to bowl and have
fun, but most importantly, to raise money that goes directly
toward recruiting, enrolling and pairing volunteers with
children needing them most. The event is all about kids.
The more donations bowlers raise, the more children will
beneft by having a Big Brother or Big Sister in their lives.
Bowlapalooza is just about a way to get involved.
Its easy to participate, with a variety of dates and times
for convenience;
nApril 20 4 to 6 p.m., 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. and 9 11 pm
nApril 21 1 to 3 p.m., 3:30 - 5:30 p.m., 6 8 p.m. and
8:30 - 10:30 p.m.
nApril 27 5:15 to 7:15 p.m.; Fremont and Newaygo
Schools and Friends Bowl and 8 to 10 p.m.; Trades Bowl-
ing (Builders, Electricians, etc.)
Apart from helping out a good cause, there also are
some incentives for teams and individuals. For every $30 in
pledges raised, bowlers will receive a raffe ticket for great
door prizes and all bowling fees are waived; for $60 raised
in pledges, bowlers will receive a 2012 Bowlapalooza shirt;
for $150 raised in pledges, bowlers will receive a BBBS fold-
ing camp chair; every bowler who raises at least $350 in
pledges will receive a Blu-Ray Player. And the events top
overall fundraiser will win a hot air balloon ride for two
with Grand Traverse Balloons in Traverse City, a value of
nearly $600.
You can make a real difference in the lives of Newaygo
County youth and have a blast doing so. Teams can sign-
up by contacting Lisa Schillaci at (231) 652-1184, or via
email at lschillaci@truenorthservices.org. You can also reg-
ister your team online at www.truenorthservices.org and
create an online fundraising page at www.frstgiving.com/
truenorth/event/bfks2012.
Bowl-a-thon
set for April 20
Soon there will be a new store on
main street in Sand Lake, opening
April 6.
The store boasts of its many se-
lections of new and used furniture,
appliances, clothing, jewelry, tools,
households, antiques and more.
Local residents Chris and Helen
Collins, daughter, Felicia and fam-
ily friend, Barbara Benjamin have
teamed up to bring a cheaper, higher-
quality place to shop. The Collins as
the previous owners of Jo Jos Cone
Zone, now Rosies ice cream and

Tri County Area Schools Extends
Community Survey Deadline
Survey to Gather Budget and Planning Input
The Tri County Area School District is extending the deadline for the
community survey from March 30th to April 15th.
Due to circumstances beyond the districts control, a delay occurred
in the mailing of the Community Survey reecting a March 30 due
date. Therefore, the district is extending the due date to April 15th.
The District is facing many challenges in the coming years and we
want to be sure that everyone in our community has an opportunity
to participate in the decision making process. Therefore, well be
extending survey deadline two weeks to make sure everyone has
sufcient time to respond.
The survey asks residents to help develop specic solutions to bud-
get shortfalls, as well as facility and technology needs. The survey
also address topics such as budgeting and board planning, district
communications, programs, facilities and overall satisfaction.
The goal of this process is to create a plan that reects the goals
and priorities of our taxpayers, said Cumings. We want to under-
stand what people really want for our students and schools, and
look forward to this process.
A report on the survey results will be presented to the Board of Edu-
cation this spring. A compilation of survey questions and results will
also be posted on the District website. If you have questions regard-
ing the survey, please contact us at 616-636-5454.
We appreciate the communities continued support to Tri County
Area Schools in our vision to help every child achieve his/her best
future.

A Bittersweet GoodBye
It is with a lot of mixed emotions that I write this letter. I have
lived in Howard City for almost 13 years and have worked at Powells
Excavating for nearly 12 years. I am sad to say it is time for me to
move on. I will be moving to Pennsylvania. We have sold our home
and will be leaving April 13. I have made so many good friends and
have met such nice people that it makes it very hard to say goodbye.
All the guys at work are like my extended family to say the least
about everyone at the hardware store and of course my family at
First Baptist Church, I love you all. I will be working a few days the
frst week of April, if you get a chance stop by and say goodbye, I
would like that very much. Thank you to everyone who so gracious-
ly helped me out while I was by myself and thanks to all for making
my past 12 years ones I will never forget. I will miss you all.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
8
The weekend pole barn project. Your buddies are
coming over to help build your new pole barn. Very
nearby, the hole where the old septic tank was located
is still visible. Should you worry that someone might
fall in and hurt themselves? Well, its obviously a deep,
dangerous hole to be avoided, so your buddies will walk
around it, right? And if a buddy falls in, how could it be
your fault when its obviously a hole and she shouldnt
have walked so close? Besides, you dont really have the
money for the ll dirt right now.
Hottman versus Hottmanwas a 1993 case in which
2 of 3 judges on a Court of Appeals panel reversed a
lower court that had ruled in favor of the homeowner
who didnt put up scaffolding for himself and his
brothers when they came to help him reroof his 12/12
(!) pitch roof. One brother had fallen off the roof. The
homeowner had maintained that they all knew it was a
dangerous roof before they got on it, so how could it be
his fault? The trial court had agreed and threw the case
out. The Appeals Court disagreed.
The facts. In the fall of 1993 Richard Hottman was
remodeling his Oxford home. Richard enlisted the help
of his brothers, Randall and Robert, to reroof. Because
of the 12/12 (every 12 inches on the slope, the roof rose
12 inches up) roof pitch, Randall proposed they should
use roof jacks and build a temporary walkway to stand
on while working. However, Richard didnt have enough
jacks and wouldnt spring the money for more. So the
brothers nailed 2x4s to the plywood roong to provide
a foothold and set to reroong. Randall fell off the roof,
broke bones, but lived.
Admittedly foolish. During a deposition Randall agreed
that he wasnt paid for his services and hadnt expected
to be paid. He agreed that the family members regularly
helped one another with projects. In fact, Richard had
helped Randall work on his home. Randall admitted
knowing this was a dangerous job. Randall even
admitted he had been lets say - foolish, to get up on
the roof without scaffolding.
Still, Randall had sued, claiming that Richard had owed
him a duty of care, which Richard breached by failing
to maintain the premises in a reasonably safe condition.
The lower, Circuit, Court judge had concluded that the
roof was such an open and obvious danger, what was
Randall thinking blaming Richard?
Wrong Reasons. As precedent for overthrowing the
Circuit Court judges decision, the Appeals Court
relied upon a famous case, Bertrand v Alan Ford, Inc,
a 1995 Michigan Supreme Court decision. In that case
the Supreme Court had stated that if the risk of harm
remains unreasonable, despite its obviousness or despite
knowledge of it by the invitee (Randall in this case),
then the circumstances may be such that the invitor
(Richard was the invitor as Randall was his visitor with
his permission) is required to undertake reasonable
precautions anyways.
So while Randall wasnt the smartest for getting up on his
brothers roof, Randalls own negligence didnt negate
Richards duty to take reasonable care for Randalls
safety. The Court of Appeals sent the case back for a
jury to decide whether Richard had taken reasonable
care for Randalls safety.
My brothers keeper? I think the high court wanted
some teeth in the notion that we are our brothers keeper.
Just because Richard has two brothers who would walk
on a 12/12 pitch roof with him without scaffolding and
without complaint, foolishly, doesnt mean Richard
should have allowed it, especially when he had the power
to improve the safety of the situation. Richard knew it
was a bad deal for his brothers. But his pocketbook was
more important to him than they were. Not what some
would call reasonable care of ones brother.
Interestingly, one judge dissented. Judge Sawyer: If
Randall believed that those footholds did not adequately
alleviate the danger of working on the roof, he could
have declined to work on the roof unless a different
safety measure was utilized, such as the roof jacks that
he now argues should have been used. And I see his
point. In Judge Sawyers mind, there comes a time when
a situation can be so open and obvious that no sensible
person can be blamed for anothers foolishness.
If good sense was common sense, wed all have it.
Then again, seems to me these three brothers all had
the foolish gene, not just Randall. Wasnt a sensible
brother among them.

Head Pain-Muscle Tension
Millions of people suffer from headaches, yet many millions more have never have had a headache. Why? It is natural not to
have head pain and in the case of all pain, it is there to tell us that something is wrong. So we begin to look for the cause of the
pain so we can x it. It is important to know there is always a cause. Many times our doctors cannot nd the cause, but know that
there is a reason for every symptom.
There are physical causes as well as mental, and emotional. The physical causes include muscle tension, migraine, sinus, allergy,
and withdrawal from pain medication and stimulants. Muscle tension has many sources. Squinting from poor vision, ill tting or
poorly corrected glasses can cause the muscles of the face to tighten and become fatigued. TMJ (Temporal Mandibular Joint-
jaw joint) inammation can cause the muscles in the face and temples to become tight. Degenerative arthritis from old injuries
in the neck can cause the muscles to tighten. They are trying to hold the neck from moving to reduce bone and joint pain.
Head and facial trauma will sometimes cause muscles to become unnecessarily tight. Trauma may also leave trigger points which
cause muscles to shorten. Long and heavy hair or hair pulled too tightly into a pony tail can cause the muscles under the scalp
to become tight. A hat that is too tight, too much frowning or too much smiling can all cause those head and facial muscles to
become too tight.
The theme is the same in all cases. Tight muscles that cannot fully relax will cause pain. The pain from muscle tension has several
causes. When a muscle is held too tightly, it cannot get proper blood ow (the capillaries are pinched off); the waste products
(lactic acid, etc.) cannot be removed by the lymphatic system (it needs motion to work); the attachments of the muscle to the
periostium (bone covering) get stressed and may actually begin to lift off the bone; the muscle contraction units (called myobrils)
may be damaged. All these things can occur when there is not enough motion within a muscle. This leads to a normal reaction
to injury called inammation. That causes release of chemicals called kinens which our nerve sensors record as pain.
So if the pain of muscle tension headache has the above causes, it is clear that the cure is not in a pill but in movement and
lengthening the affected muscles. Correcting the cause behind the cause is necessary. Get the glasses tuned up. Avoid the tight
cap. Loosen the pony tail. Thin or cut and donate the heavy hair. TMJ can be cured by wearing a bite
splint (football players mouth guard) at night. Before bed, apply one drop of the Essential Oil, Lavender,
in front of each ear and apply some heat for 10 minutes. Then open your mouth wide and massage from
the lower ears up into your temples for 4-5 minutes. It will hurt, but will eventually stretch the muscles and
eliminate the pain. You can do the stretch/massage several times per day. Later I will discuss how to release
the emotional stress that causes one to clinch their teeth.
Stretching the head and neck muscles every morning or throughout the day will keep them loose and
limber. Massage is an excellent way to stretch, loosen, and re-educate a muscle that has lost its memory for
the neutral position. Acupuncture, myotherapy, trigger point release, Chiropractic, Yoga, and Reiki are all
great methods to deal with muscle tension pain. Remember do not stop with the diagnosis, nd the cause
behind it. In your search you must always ask, Why? Keep looking for the cause until you heal yourself.

Spring Means Animals
on the Road
By Craig W. Armstrong
Spring is here and everyone wants to enjoy
the warmer weather that includes animals.
Each year, there are more than a million
auto accidents involving animals, account-
ing for an estimated 10,000 injuries and
150 deaths each year. The average amount
of property damage caused by animal col-
lisions is $2,500 per accident.
Where you live determines which animals
you might encounter. Animals like deer,
moose, elk, horse and cows often wander
onto highways or roads. The most impor-
tant thing a driver can do to stay safe is to
be alert.
Reducing your speed is key to avoiding
an animal-related accident. The more time
you have to react, the better chance you
will have of avoiding an accident. In areas
animals are known to habitat, get into the
habit of scanning the roadway. Use your
high beams whenever possible. This will
help you see the animals eyes reected in
the light.
Keep in mind that many species of ani-
mals travel in groups. When you see one
deer bounding across the road, chances are
there will be several more following. Be
extra cautious when driving near farms,
wooded areas, open elds and water. Many
times you will see signs advising you of
the animals known to cross the road in that
area. Take these signs seriously.
Make yourself known. Use your horn to
warn the animal of your presence. Honking
your horn is the most effective way to get
the animals attention. If are in a situation
where an accident with an animal is inevi-
table, dont swerve. Swerving to avoid an
animal can cause more damage and injury
than hitting the animal.
Apply the brakes hard, honk your horn
and try to maintain control of your vehicle.
If there are vehicles behind you, pump
your brakes and sound your horn. As with
anytime you get into a vehicle, be sure to
use your seatbelt. If you do have a colli-
sion with an animal, stay in your vehicle,
as getting out increases your chances of
being hit by another vehicle. Report the
incident to the police immediately.
Animals dont get issued drivers licenses,
but they do share the road with you. Drive
defensively, stay alert and be safe.

New AC Delco & Motorcraft Distributor!
The days are getting warm-
er, the ice has melted and the
birds have returned. That can
mean only one thing-spring
has sprung. For many peo-
ple, spring brings a return
to the great outdoors. It can
also mean less treacherous
and time consuming driv-
ing. No more digging your
car out just to go to work,
driving at a snails pace and
scraping, yes, the dreaded
scraping.
While its tempting to jump
in your vehicle and enjoy the
freedom that spring brings
to driving, keep in mind that
like you, your car has been
through a lot over the win-
ter. There are several things
that need to be checked and
prepared for spring driving.
Depending on your level of
car maintenance expertise,
you may be able to do most
of these things yourself. If
not, have a professional take
a look under the hood.
Begin where the rubber
meets the road-your tires.
Check your tire pressure.
The correct pressure will
be printed on the tire in PSI
(pounds per square inch). If
the tire is under the recom-
mended PSI, inate it to that
number...DONT OVER
INFLATE IT. This may also
be a good time to get your
tires rotated. This should be
done every 5,000 to 10,000
miles.
For many areas, spring
means rain so its a good
time to check your wiper
blades. There are few things
more annoying than driving
in the rain with wiper blades
that arent doing their job.
Its frustrating to have a big
smear across your eld of
vision or a torn wiper blade
trailing across your wind-
shield. Avoid these prob-
lems b checking your wiper
blades. Replacing the blades
is quick, easy and relatively
inexpensive. Simply go into
your local auto parts store,
tell them your vehicle make
and model, and theyll direct
you to the correct replace-
ment blade. Many stores will
even install them for you.
Another part that is easy to
check is your battery. Pop
the hood and make sure that
the posts on the battery are
clean. If there is an excess
of corrosion on the battery,
consider replacing it.
Clean out the interior.
Months of salty and snowy
boots have no doubt taken
a toll on the carpeting. Its
a good time to vacuum and
perhaps even shampoo the
carpeting. While youre at
it, clean out the empty cof-
fee cups and fast food bags.
Other things to consider are
the air lter, the oil and oil
lter, and the radiator and
cooling system. Spring is
a time to get reacquainted
with the great outdoors-just
make sure your vehicle is
ready to spring into better
weather.

Your Vehicle
