Assignment # 2 Geographical Terminology

Geographical Terms (In your own words give a brief description of each.
Island: Small land mass surrounded by water. Archipelago: Chains of Island.

Reef: Ridges of land that rise to near the surface of the water. Often found offshore comprised of sand, rock and coral, reefs, provides good facility of diving. Lagoon: Shallow bodies of water, generally found in tropical areas.

Esquimalt Lagoon, Victoria, Vancouver Island. Florida keys, Cayman Island. Mississippi Delta.

Cay: A low reef or island composed of sand dune or Reef. Delta: Land built up by silt that has overflowed from rivers as they meet large bodies of water. Usually in triangular shape. Isthmus: A narrow land form connecting larger land form in to land.

Panama of Mexico.

Gulf: A part of the ocean or sea that is partially enclosed by a land, especially a long landlocked portion of sea opening through a strait. Strait: A channel of water that lies between two land masses; often connects two larger, navigable bodies of water.

Caribbean in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida.

Strait of Georgia, between Vancouver Island and Mainland British Columbia. Hall Peninsula of Baffin Island, Nunavut.

Cape/ Peninsula: A piece of land that is bordered by water on three sides but connected to mainland.

Dune: A hill of Sand built by wind.

Great Sand Dunes National Park, Colorado. Deccan Plateau, India. Baumann Fjord, Nunavut. Aconcagua Glacier, Argentina.

Plateau/Mesa/Butte: an area of highlands. Fjord: a long and narrow arm of the sea bordered by steep cliffs: usually formed by glacial erosion. Glacier: a large persistent body of ice that forms where the accumulation of snow exceeds its ablation over many years. Waterfalls: A place where flowing water rapidly drops in elevation as it flows over a steep region or a cliff.

Niagara Fall, Niagara. & Angel Fall in Venezuela.

Monsoon: a rainy season of the year. Tsunami: a flood from ocean of large form of water waves which is natural calamity. Hawaii Tsunami,2010

Ecotourism Responsible Travel of Natural Areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people. Give an example of a country that promotes Ecotourism: INDIA.

The Prime Meridian The Earths zero of longitude, which by conventions passes through Greenwich, England. It is used as a reference line from which the longitude east and west is reckoned.

The International Dateline: It is an imaginary line on the surface of the earth, running between north and south poles, which demarcate one calendar from the next. It passes through the middle of the pacific ocean with 180* longitude.
