S900 Remote Terminal Unit

Introduction
The S900 is made up of components designed to implement systems tailored for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA).The S900 is constructed to the highest standards of performance, safety, and reliability to meet the requirements of the ELECTRICAL Power industry.

Main Features
Power :The S900 contains one 32bit 32-MHz microprocessor per processing unit. Modular Construction :The S900 incorporates a wide range of hardware modules : Industrial I/O modules Communications modules CPU modules Enclosures Peripheral devices Test and maintenance equipment. Capacity :The S900 has been specially designed for medium and large-capacity systems (up to 5000 I/Os). Distributed I/O :Inputs/outputs may be centralized or geographically distributed in a site.Processing units are interconnected through a FIP fieldbus (1Mb/s). Communication :The S900 uses standard communication protocols for : Communication with Master Station Communication with Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs).

Flexibility :The S900 architecture aims to minimize the variety of hardware modules installed.Also module features are customized through software to reduce maintenance and the need for spare parts. Immunity :The S900 is designed to meet the international requirements relating to electrical strength in disturbed environments (including IEC, IEEE, and ANSI standards). Open architecture :The S900 architecture is based on a VMEbus that allows high levels of integration for additional hardware modules.

Environment
The S900 is integrated into a system that may include the following components : Conventional devices to be supervised and controlled ; Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) to be supervised and controlled ; One, two or three master stations ; One or two printers ; One alphanumeric terminal (VDU + keyboard) ; One synchronization clock (Radio or Satellite).

Functions
The S900 RTU can handle both digital and analog inputs/outputs. Data capture and output are accomplished by I/O modules or via Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs).The entities and related functions controlled by the S900 RTU include : I/O Capacity Signalings (RS) : Single, dual Normal, reverse, transient Scan cycle :1ms to 10ms Filtering for complementary fault or fleeting Capacity : 4300 Analog measurements (ARM) : Current 4-20mA, 0-10mA, 10mA, 5mA, 1mA (with external resistors) Voltage 5V, 2.5V, 1.25V

Digital setpoints (DSP) : BCD (16 bits), Binary (16 bits), Gray (16 bits), 1 among N (16 or 32 bits). Direct execution or by steps (20 steps with a duration from 1s to 30s) Capacity : 51 Tap changer positions (TP) : BCD (3 decades), 1 among N coded, Decimal coded with tap Capacity : 51 Multiple master station communications The S900 can communicate with three master stations using separate communication protocols and separate databases for each of them.One master station is able to access S900 through two channels (dual channel connections). The S900 supports multiple protocols : IEC 60870-5-101. HNZ 66S15. HNZ-ELENAS. Many custom protocols.

Connection to IEDs The S900 can acquire data (I/O points) from IEDs.This is accomplished by polling each IED, through serial ports with a maximum speed of 19200 baud.Up to 32 serial ports can be managed for all the different communications (Master station, IEDs).Up to 256 IEDs can be connected to the S900 (primary and secondary racks). The S900 supports multiple protocols : Standard Modbus using RTU mode Extended Modbus for acquisition of time-tagged events IEC 60870-5-101 IEC 60870-5-103 (VDEW) K-bus Courier.

Automatic Functions Performing automatic controls based on ISaGRAF soft-logic package can be implemented on each CPU boards to define : Interlock functions Supervision functions Autoreclose, etc. Local Data logging The S900 supports : An alphanumeric terminal VDT900 (screen + keyboard) One or two printers The VDT900 provides the ability to :Monitor the real-time state of all digital and analog data ; Send operator commands ; Display the archive file ; Modify the date and time. The printer provides the ability to : Print status changes ; Print the result of the operator request Archiving Recording of 2000 events in a FIFO queue. Recording of system fault conditions in a special buffer containing up to 200 faults. Local or remote interface.

Local alarms Three loops can be used in the S900 for alarms. A RS, RM or internal status change can initiate a local alarm.The alarm contact closing time is user-selectable. Internal and external data can be grouped using a logical OR gate on one alarm loop.

Synchronization The S900 can be synchronized by an external clock or by the master station. The main CPU synchronizes the other racks through a FIPbus with an accuracy of 25s. The S900 can synchronize the IEDs with an accuracy less than 2ms. The internal clock accuracy is 10-5 s.

Tools and Peripherals


GBD900 GBD900 is a Database Generator implemented in a compatible PC running in a relational environment (ORACLE). The GDB900 configurator includes : Hardware configuration Operating parameters and limits Specific customers labels The databases for secondary racks are directly imported from the primary rack through the FIP fieldbus.

The S900 can be used with the supervisory Control and Monitoring PROCETT 5000W. PROCETT 5000W is a centralized Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system for local or remote site industrial facilities.Its high real-time performance make it ideally suited to handle events occurring in electric power networks and plants. Standards and Performance Pentium-based microcomputer. Windows multitasking operating system, and WRTEX real-time kernel. C++ object library. HNZ, Modbus and IEC 870-5-101communication protocols. IEDs

The architecture of the S900 is based on a FIP bus used to connect the different rack units. Each rack incorporates a power supply, a CPU, I/O and communication modules on a VMEbus. The primary rack handles the communication, process controls, peripheral devices, inputs/outputs and general automatic functions. The secondary racks manage the inputs/outputs and local automatic functions.

CPU 930-Main CPU Module 32-bit 68020 microprocessorbased. Clock frequency :32 MHz. Memory :8MB static RAM with lithium battery backup.256 KB EPROM. Static RAM with write-protect facility for each memory bank; Real-time clock. Lithium battery backed-up clock/calendar. VMEbus interface (24 address lines-16 data lines).

Two V24/V28 asynchronous lines (operating at 50 to 38400 baud) available on front-panel,= 9-pin CANNON connectors. Watchdog timer with automatic restart capability + Alarm loop. One Watchdog + power failure lamp. Six signal loops (including Watchdog). Eight front-panel status lamps. Two ON/OFF inputs. Interface for daughterboard FBS 910 over FIP network. Interface for rack-to-rack timing : 2100V peak isolation.

Power consumption : 5V supply : 1A ; +12V supply : 0.1A ; -12V supply : 0.1A. Module width : one slot in the VMEbus rack. MTBF : 36 years.
