Melissa S. Brock Collection Evaluation and Development Plan FRIT 7134 Spring 2011

Description of the Site/ Environmental Scan The site for the plan is the media center at Elcan-King Elementary in Bainbridge, Georgia. The school is one of five elementary schools in Decatur County and serves students from Pre-K through fourth grade. There are 492 students, 36 certified teachers, 23 paraprofessionals, 2 administrators, 2 office staff members, and 3 custodians. Approximately seventy percent of the total student population qualifies for the free or reduced lunch program. The GPS standards that this collection plan focuses on are the science standards that involve space. There are two standards for the fourth grade. There are ninety-eight students in the fourth grade of which seventy-six percent are free or reduced lunch, twelve percent have special needs accommodations for reading, and ten percent are ESOL students. AR Reading levels for the fourth grade vary from 2.5 to 6.8. There are four teachers in the fourth grade, and four homeroom classrooms. The teachers are departmentalized, so one teacher is responsible for four rotations of science classes. There are also two space standards in second grade science GPS standards. There are eighty-four students in the second grade of which seventy-seven percent are free or reduced lunch, seven percent have special needs accommodations for reading, and five percent are ESOL students. AR Reading levels for the second grade vary from 0.8 to 4.2. There are four teachers in the second grade, and four classrooms. The teachers are all responsible for teaching science to the students. The media center houses 12,182 books and reference materials, 136 videos, 27 audio books, United Streaming, and Galileo. The center is centrally located for the school because of the outer doorways, as long as the weather is good. There are four computers in the library and a computer lab near the schools main hallway, and there are computers for student access in each classroom. There is an internet filter that limits teacher and student searches because of the blocks for improper content. Curriculum Review/ Mapping The science teacher for the fourth grade uses certain sections of the Georgia edition fourth grade Harcourt Science textbook for student reading and uses the AIMS Earth Science mini-books and experiments related to space. The AIMS books are aligned with the GPS standards for Earth Science in relation to space concepts.

Collection Evaluation The media center is small with very little space for large classroom use. There is room in the back of the media center with tables and chairs, TV, and AV equipment for small group work, and an area near the front with tables and chairs for meetings and teacher planning. The four computers are located near the circulation desk at the front of the center. The nonfiction books are located in tall shelves on the wall in the back of the center where the tables are, which can be convenient for small group research. They are organized and labeled by the Dewey decimal system and are also labeled with the AR reading level of the book. There is plenty of shelf room for growth. The fiction books are separated and organized by AR reading levels on both short (lower levels) and tall (higher levels) shelves near the circulation desk in the

Collection and Evaluation Plan

front of the center. Reference books are located on short shelves in the middle of the center near the meeting area. I perused the shelves in all of the sections in order to perform a direct, physical evaluation of the books and media relevant to my development plan focus of space. The books in the nonfiction area were in very good shape with only a few showing extreme age and use. The books in the fiction area appeared to be very well used, and repaired frequently. The reference books showed even less use and wear than the nonfiction books. The reference books were general, with no specific topics about space or technology. When I questioned the SLMS, she said that students rarely used the area while in the media center. There were no Spanish/ bilingual books or references related to space in the center. The audio book selection contained only one fiction title related to space. There were six videos, nonfiction and fiction, that were on space topics. There were not any periodicals on the shelves at the time of my evaluation. Due to budget issues and infrequency of use, the SLMS has not reordered the periodicals. An age analysis of the nonfiction, space-related books revealed a collection that ranges in age from 1981 through 2009. The average age of the books was 1997, with the largest amount of the collection from the 1990s.

Age Analysis

1980s 1990s 2000s

A circulation study of the media center helped to shed some more light on the use of the collection. The nonfiction books of interest are mainly located in the 500s section of the center. There are a total of 1006 books in this section, with a yearly circulation of 4022. That averages to about four times per book. There are also space related books in the 600s and 900s. The circulation for these areas was only two to three times per book. The low circulation

Collection and Evaluation Plan

led me to believe that they are not what students and teachers are interested in reading, even though they are relevant to the GPS standards being taught. I then performed brief interviews with the four teachers in the second grade and the science teacher for the fourth grade. The following questions were asked: Question Do you use the nonfiction books in the media center when teaching topics related to space concepts? Do you use the fiction books related to space concepts to enhance reading interest? Do you use any of the videos that are related to space concepts in your teaching? How would you rate the media centers collection of space-related media materials, like books, videos, references, etc? (Excellent, Fair, or Poor) What would you like to see changed about the collection? Response 4 out of 5 said Yes

3 out of 5 said Yes 2 out of 5 said Yes Excellent=0 Fair=3 Poor=2

Teacher #1- The books are so old! We need to update! Teacher #2- We need books that are more for the younger students. The information can be too much for the younger students, and over their heads. The videos are more suitable for middle school. Teacher #3- I think we need more books that are new and have more recent information; and about what we have learned in the previous decade about the planets and stars. Teacher #4- We need more videos like Bill Nyes. He seems to keep their interest better than the monotone-type speakers on space videos. The books need to be more kid friendly, and not so boring! Teacher #5- It would be nice to have the books on display when we are teaching the students about the space standards. Maybe the books with interesting titles and covers, so they get more curious and check it out. It would be nice to see students reading about what we are learning on their own time. It would definitely mean more!

Collection and Evaluation Plan

Due to the large variance in reading levels and reading accommodations needed for the second and fourth grades, I decided to evaluate the reading levels of the related books. The AR reading levels of the students vary from 0.8, the lowest in second grade, to 6.8, the highest in fourth grade. The books in the media center varied from 1.2 to 7.0 in the space related titles.

AR Reading Levels
60 50 40 30 20 10 0 0.1 to 1.0 1.1 to 2.0 2.1 to 3.0 3.1 to 4.0 4.1 to 5.0 5.1 to 6.0 6.1 to 7.0

Summary of Evaluations Strengths: The books are in good condition and are repaired appropriately. There is a high level of use of fiction books. The shelves are not crowded and are open for adding new titles to the collection. The higher level of visible use of the fiction group leads me to believe that more inviting nonfiction books are needed to encourage interest in this area Weaknesses: The majority of space materials and references is older and needs to be updated and replaced. There are not any materials that are in Spanish, or contain bilingual language. Also, the collection is more concentrated in one area of the reading levels. There are a low number of audiovisual materials.

Collection and Evaluation Plan

This data encourages me to look for newer fiction and nonfiction books to update the collections timeliness; vary the selection over more reading levels; improve the reference section; create a larger collection of audiovisual media; and include appropriate materials to offer language and reading challenged students. Budget Summary In the materials order below, the above data was taken into account as well as the curriculum standards and teacher opinions. The materials have been chosen to meet the needs of varying reading levels, abilities, and languages that the target school population contains. The total amount used of the $4000 budget is $3996.34. The timeliness of the materials, books, and references was updated to the current decade. Books were ordered from a 1.0 reading level to a 6.8 reading level. Spanish and bilingual titles were chosen in varying levels. Recorded and interactive books have also been included. Internet website options are included for more reading, visual, and reference options.
