The devenish apartments

Between 1910 and 1913 Calgary recorded its first major economic boom. The city grew by a remarkable 33 per cent. Housing was in short supply. The development industry stepped up, building a total of 13 apartment complexes in 1911 alone. The Devenish Apartments, a half-a-block, three-storey, red brick structure on 17th Avenue S.W., was the largest, most elaborate and architecturally distinguished of them all. On the exterior, this 57-suite apartment building boasted distinctively curved Jacobean-style gables and castellated towers (since removed), numerous porches and enormous balconies. Inside, it offered amenities unmatched just about anywhere in western Canada, including wide central corridors, maple floors, private baths, built-in beds, soundproofing of interior walls and service call bells. Built between 1907 and 1911 on the site of the citys original town hall, Calgary City Hall is a four-storey, sandstone-clad, steel-framed structure designed in the Richardsonian Romanesque style. Its tumbled stone faade, with the striking central clock tower and ornamental rooftop lanterns, beckons the passerby to take notice. This has been the seat of municipal government from the beginning. The offices of the mayor, aldermen and City clerk have always resided here. In the early years, the building also housed Calgarys Police headquarters, a courtroom and conveniently, 15 jail cells on the ground floor.

The alberta Hotel

This impressive Italianate style sandstone landmark was one of the first main commercial buildings to be constructed after the 1886 fire that levelled Calgarys original downtown, making it one of the oldest structures in the area today. Built in 18881890 on the corner of one of Calgarys most prominent downtown intersections, the Alberta Hotel quickly became the citys most popular lodging and gathering place for the up-and-coming and the well-to-do. It featured luxurious accommodations, a first-class dining room, a barbershop, a billiards room, a reading room and a popular drinking lounge complete with a 125-foot-long bar.

The nellie McClung House

The Tudor Revival exterior of this historical home boasts steeply pitched roofs, mock half-timbered gables and multiple verandas and porches. The interior is fashioned in the Arts and Crafts style with beamed and crossbeamed ceilings, dark wood paneling and clay-tile fireplaces. Built on a corner lot in one of Calgarys premier residential neighbourhoods in 1907, the Nellie McClung house has considerable stature and poise; a fitting choice for one of the most influential women in Canadian history. One of the Famous Five suffragists, Nellie McClung was a successful writer, a temperance leader, a womens rights advocate and a respected member of the Alberta Legislative Assembly. She lived in this home with her husband and five children from 192332.

The Bridgeland/riverside Vacant lot Garden

The Vacant Lots Garden Club pioneered a civic beautification initiative in 1914. The objective was to encourage individuals who owned vacant lots to cultivate and transform them into fertile garden plots. Free of weeds and debris, the gardens would produce vegetables or flowers and contribute to the nourishment and overall aesthetics and pride of the community as a whole. The Bridgeland-Riverside Vacant Lots Garden, the last of its kind in Calgary, dates back to the late 1920s. Marshall Libicz (88) has been working in the garden since he was a small child. And Mike Ricketts was instrumental in getting the garden protected as a heritage asset.

The Customs House

In 1912, customs receipts in this city exceeded those of any other centre west of Toronto. In response, the federal government commissioned Calgarys Customs House. It was completed in 1916 and functioned largely as a foreign goods sorting warehouse through to 1979. The Customs House is a four-storey Chicago Commercial-style warehouse building with a decidedly upscale presence. Canadian sourced building materials and fittings were used whenever possible, reflecting the periods strong sense of nationalism. The exterior is clad in local, rusticated sandstone and brick with pilasters and a substantial sheet metal cornice capping the facades. Its classical details continue inside with Quebec marble paneling and staircase.

eau Claire Smokestack

A red brick structure stretching 90-feet up in the sky, the Eau Claire Smokestack is a remnant of the Calgary Transit System Garage located on the old Bow River Lumber Company site in Eau Claire from 1947 to 1988. The smokestack was built in conjunction with the heating and boiler system for the facility. The buildings have since been demolished, but the smokestack remains as a local landmark, recalling the utilitarian uses of the area prior to its development into the trendy shopping and entertainment district it is today.

Fire Hall no. 1

This two-storey, red brick Neo-classical building served as Calgarys main fire hall from when it was first built in 1911 through to 1973. For many years, it was the only motorized fire hall in the city, and headquarters for the Calgary Fire Departments first Fire Chief, James Cappy Smart. The buildings five bays with sandstone detailing and semi-circular arched openings, an offset pediment, and a 50-foot high cupola-topped hose tower gave the civic building an air of sophistication. Its unique placement at a 45-degree angle adjacent to two major city streets downtown was strategically designed to improve access, visibility and response times.

The Ogden Hotel

With its Classical Revival-style architecture, angled faade and front verandas, the Ogden Hotel was the most substantial commercial structure in Ogden for its time. Today it stands as a monument to commercial ambition and bad timing. In 1911, the CPR announced plans to root its Western Canada repair facility in the Ogden area. In 1912, the Calgary Brewing and Malting Company saw a market in the making and built the 64-room Ogden Hotel complete with a huge dining room, a basement bowling alley, a billiards room and, of course, a wellproportioned bar. A worldwide depression hit in 1913. Then, in 1914 there was war. In 1915 the Ogden Hotel gave itself over to the Red Cross and it became the first military convalescent hospital in Alberta.

The Jackson residence

Built in 1911, the Jackson Residence is one of Lower Mount Royals original homes. This two-and-a-half storey, wood framed, foursquare-plan house has a front paneled verandah, balconies and Palladian dormer windows reminiscent of the American Colonial-revival style. The house is named after its original owner, Frank Jackson, a construction worker from Minnesota, but its public profile surged more recently, after internationally renowned musician Billy Cowsill took up residence there. Billys band, The Cowsills, was the inspiration behind the 1970s TV show, The Partridge Family.

Southern alberta Pioneers Memorial Building (1954-55)

This rustic, hand-hewn log bungalow embodies the mountain architecture and enduring spirit of the pioneer west. Literally. It serves as headquarters for the Society of Alberta Pioneers and Their Descendents, a group established in 1922 to collect, preserve and promote the early pioneer history of southern Alberta. Originally, membership was open only to true pioneers in the region folks who had lived in southern Alberta prior to 1891. The membership roster was a true Whos Who of Albertas pioneer families and included many of Calgarys most prominent citizens. Today, their descendents are granted membership, and the history carries on.

The King edward Hotel

Built in phases between 1905 (the two-storey portion) and 1910 (a five-storey extension), the King Edward Hotel is a modest pioneer brick structure in the Edwardian Commercial style, located in Calgarys East Village. With a popular, albeit somewhat notorious drinking establishment on the main floor, and 105 rooms upstairs, it attracted a steady working-class clientele through prohibition (19161925), desegregation and beyond. In the early 1980s, The King Eddy successfully rebranded itself as Home of the Blues, gaining a reputation far and wide, and attracting the likes of B.B. King, John Hammond, Pinetop Perkins and Otis Rush. The iconic hotel and bar closed for business in 2004.

Knox United Church

Built in 191213, Knox United Church is home to the oldest Protestant congregation in the city. The first Protestants came to Calgary in 1883 with the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway. They formed a congregation that same year. Knox United Church is one of Calgarys largest historic churches and the citys most impressive example of Gothic Revival style design. It features a cruciform plan with seating for 1,200, a side tower and an administrative wing. Over time, the congregation added an extension, and 34 stained glass windows to further adorn the imposing sandstone-clad structure.

Preserving the past for the future.

Historic preservation involves three steps: identification (know and understand what has significant heritage value and merits preservation), protection (legally protect historic resources to prevent demolition), and management (ensure alterations do not negatively impact the heritage value). In Alberta municipalities, legal protection of historic resources is achieved through a Designation Bylaw that prohibits demolition and protects the heritage value of the resource through a specific approval process that governs alterations. These bylaws cannot be passed without the owners consent. The City collaborates with owners to provide incentives (e.g. tax abatements, rezoning benefits, parking relaxations and direct grants) for legal protection of historic resources. To date, The City has protected 35 local sites as Municipal Historic Resources, including those featured in this years calendar. In 2010 The City of Calgary received formal recognition and a National Honourable Mention for The Prince of Wales Prize for Municipal Heritage Leadership from the Heritage Canada Foundation. As well, the Alberta Historical Resources Foundation honoured The City with a Provincial award for Calgarys commitment to the protection of its historic resources. 2011 marks the 100th anniversary of Historic City Hall. Its preservation as a Municipal Historic Resource will ensure the building stands, along with the many City Councils which will deliberate within its walls, just as theyve done in years past. a
