ARI STANDARD 280-95

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE QUALIFICATION OF REVERBERANT ROOMS IN THE 63 HZ OCTAVE BAND

Section 1. Purpose 1.1 Purpose. The purpose of this standard is to establish a method of qualifying reverberant rooms for measurement in the 63 Hz octave band to permit the extension of sound power determinations at frequency levels below those covered in ANSI Standards S12.31 and S12.32. 1.1.1 Intent. This standard is intended for the guidance of the industry, including manufacturers, engineers, installers, contractors and users. 1.1.2 Review and Amendment. This standard is subject to review and amendment as technology advances. 3.5 Low Frequency Data. Low frequency data for purposes of this standard is 1/3 or 1/1 Octave Band Data in the 50 Hz, 63 Hz and 80 Hz Bands. 3.6 "Shall," "Should," "Recommended" or "It Is Recommenced". "Shall," "should," "recommended" or "it is recommended" shall be interpreted as follows: Shall. Where "shall" or "shall not" is used for a provision specified, that provision is mandatory if compliance with the standard is claimed. Should, Recommended or It Is Recommended. "Should," "recommended" or "it is recommended" is used to indicated provisions which are not mandatory but which are desirable as good practice.

Section 2. Scope Section 4. Testing and Rating Requirements 2.1 Scope. This standard applies to products rated in the 63 Hz octave band where the sound power is determined by measurement in a reverberant room per ANSI Standards S12.31 and S12.32. 4.1 Low Frequency Reverberation Room Qualification Requirements. 4.1.1 Use of Comparison Technique. To make measurements in frequency bands below 100 Hz, users of this standard shall use the comparison measurement technique described in ANSI Standard S12.31 or S12.32. The reference sound source used shall not have any tones present in its spectrum in these bands. 4.1.2 Procedure for the Measurement of Broadband Sound. The procedures of Section 8 of ANSI S12.31 shall be followed. For each frequency band, the test room qualifies for the measurement of broadband noise if the computed standard deviation does not exceed the limits given in Table 4 of ANSI Standard S12.31 as extended below.

Section 3. Definitions 3.1 Definitions. All terms in this document will follow the standard industry definitions in the current edition of ASHRAE Terminology of Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration unless otherwise defined in this section. 3.2 Broadband Sound. Broadband sound is sound that is random in nature with frequency components distributed over a broad frequency band. Typically pure tones or periodic disturbances will not be distinguishable in this type of sound spectrum. 3.3 Comparison Method. A method of determining sound power level by comparing the average sound pressure level produced in the room by a reference sound source of known sound power level output. The difference in sound power level is equal to the difference in sound pressure level when conditions in the room are the same for both sets of measurements. 3.4 Discrete Frequency Sounds/Tones. Discrete frequency sounds or tones consists of one or more sound waves, each of which are essentially sinusoidal.

ARI STANDARD 280-95 4.1.3 Procedure for the Measurement of Discrete Frequency Components. The procedures of Section 5 of ANSI S12.32 shall be followed. For each frequency band, the test room qualifies for the measurement of discrete frequency components if the computed standard deviation does not exceed the limits given by Table 4 of ANSI Standard S12.32 as extended below. 4.2 Reverberant Room Volume Requirements for Low Frequency Measurements. If a room meets the qualification requirement for two or more of the 1/3 octave bands in the 63 Hz octave band, then the room is qualified in the 63 Hz octave band.

Section 5. Voluntary Conformance Octave Band Center Frequency (Hz) 63 One-Third Octave Band Frequency (Hz) 50, 63, 80 Standard Deviation Ss (dB) 4 5.1 Voluntary Conformance. While conformance with this standard is voluntary, conformance shall not be claimed or implied unless such claims meet all of the requirements of the standard.

In Section 5.4, the Loudspeaker Test, and Section 5.5, the Room Test, for evaluating one-third octave bands below 100 Hz, the discrete frequencies used in the 50, 63, and 80 Hz bands are equal to those found in Table 5 for the 500, 630, and 800 Hz bands divided by 10.
