This unit will be revolving around a first grade project that I support during intervention. The project is called Ask the Experts. Each first grade student is assigned an animal to research. They become experts on their animal. This includes writing a report and presenting a poster. During intervention, I guide them through the research process while utilizing a tool from the Expanding Expression program. This program uses visual cues to give related details to the main idea. These cues are: Green Group (Main Idea) Blue Do (What does it do?) What Does it Look Like? What is it Made Of? Pink Parts (What are the parts? or What is Your Favorite Part?) White Where (Where does it live?) What Else Do You Know? (Fun Fact) These lessons will help guide the students in research and give them quality resources. The end product will be the presentation done in front of the whole class and the parents.

Lesson One: Resources -Photographs of a variety of animals -Display of variety of books about animals -Expanding Expression Tool Chart -Computer/ Smartboard -Paper/Pencils Steps
* Have whole group look at photos of animals. Raise hands to comment on schema about animals. * Introduce Ask the Experts project: Each of you is going to become an expert on an animal. You will teach us about what they look like, what they do, where they live, their families, and your favorite facts. * Each student is handed a slip of paper and writes down his/her 1st and 2nd choice of animal. * Begin review of the Expanding Expression Tool- and the areas of focus for the report: what do they do (eat, play, protect), what do they look like, what are the families like, where do they live, what is a favorite part, and fun facts

-Paper for Notetaking/Pencils -Websites: www.kidsknowit.com www.kidsbiology.com has Animal Database www.ala.org/greatsites www.internet4classrooms.com/science _elem_animals.htm

* Introduce 4 sites for animal research- focus on: what does animal look like, what does animal do, what are families like *Monitor within the computer lab as fifth grade lab helpers also assist in notetaking

*Lesson Three will at least three days as the students cover the areas of: what does animal look like, what does animal do, and what families are like. Lesson Four: Resources -Computer Lab/ Printers -Smartboard -Expanding Expression Tool for reference -Paper for Notetaking/ Pencils -Posters -Glue/Scissors Steps *Review project expectation *Allow students to take time sharing progress in research/ things they like about websites *Introduce topic of habitat *Watch movie on biomes/habitat *Have students research on EThemes Websites: *Have students continue any (any sites already introduced) research that still needs to be http://kidsknowit.com/interactivedone educational-movies/free-online*Students write final copy of movies.php?movie?=Biomes notes on notecards to be presented on poster http://ethemes.missouri.edu/themes/ *Students begin to print out 1604?locale=en pictures and assemble on poster
