Master of Science in

Architectural Design
(with thesis)
The four-year undergraduate education at schools of architecture in Turkey is based on giving basic information both on the practical and also the theoretical aspects of architecture. The main emphasis in the Master of Architecture Program in Architectural Design with Thesis Program at Istanbul Kltr University is to improve and deepen the scope of the basic information given during undergraduate education. The aim of the program is to bring up individuals and architects who are able to think deeply and analytically on themselves and on their profession in the context of the complex structure of the contemporary world. Architecture does not only have its own peculiar closed field of information. The knowledge of architecture, in addition to its ontological knowledge, is constituted and improved by being nourished from social sciences, philosophy, psychology, economy and technology. Developing a holistic view, comprising these different fields of knowledge, is very important for architecture that aims to shape the physical environment of people. The main research fields of the program are architectural theory and philosophy, design problems, city and architecture, landscape and architecture, theories and methods in architectural education and environmental psychology. In this context, the aim is to develop studies, targeting to start discussions on urban and social geography, thought and building systems, time and space concepts, and modern and current technologies, to improve the skill of analyzing and evaluating architectural products in the context of architectural concepts, and to develop a unique view oriented towards reading urban phenomena and architectural products. Students are expected to complete an original academic/scientific study and present this in the format of thesis at the end of the M. Arch program.

Master of

Architecture
(without thesis)
Istanbul Kltr University Master of Architecture in Architectural Design without Thesis Program depends on the concept of praxis (activity based thought), keeping the architectural design studio at the center. Thus, students are expected to take one architectural design studio and two elective courses for four semesters, with the aim of improving their skills in architectural design by means of projects more comprehensive than the ones in the undergraduate program. Architectural design studios are directed by a coordinator and based on a jury system with at least three jury members attending jury sessions organized periodically. Different from the ordinary coordinator and jury system, nationally or internationally prestigious jury members, who can be either academicians or professionals, are included in the decision making process of the program, enriched by some events like conferences, panels or excursions. Thus, with the participation of experts from various disciplines and the intensive effort of the students, architectural design studio becomes a process enabling students to understand and analyze the contemporary world, by using the tools of architecture, instead of being a simple architectural end product. Students empower and nourish the above mentioned design process by taking courses not only from Master of Architecture in Architectural Design without Thesis Program, but also from the pool including courses of Urban Planning, History of Architecture and Restoration, Architectural Engineering, and Building Management and Technology Programs in the Institute, determined together with their advisors.

Master of Science in

Construction Management and Technology

(with thesis)
Construction industry cannot remain out of the technological and managerial changes in the world, and is expected to keep up with these improvements. In this context, it is necessary to develop more conscious and specialized professional structures, instead of ordinary processes and techniques. In the Master of Science in Construction Management and Technology Program at IKU, the aim is to educate professionals who are competent in management and technical specialization, and who can utilize contemporary building technologies in an efficient and correct way. For this reason, courses in this program are separated into two basic knowledge areas, which are Construction Projects Management and Construction Technology. Construction Management has become an activity area in the world for nearly fifty years. It is also an accepted field of study in higher education. It is important for professionals who will take part in practice as an architect, engineer, project manager, etc. to be aware of construction management discipline. In this context, raising future leaders of the construction sector, who are equipped with a high level of managerial and technical skills, are among the aims of the project and construction management basic information area. Furthermore, the program is designed for professionals who can track technological changes in construction industry. Master of Science in Construction Management and Technology program is suggested for those who want to have a necessary specialized education on construction methods, construction materials, efficient energy consumption and sustainable built environment.

Master of Science in

Architectural History And Restoration

(with thesis)

The importance of conservation education is indisputable in a country like Turkey, which has such a rich historical repertoire. However, wrong decisions and unqualified practices give irreversible damage to our cultural heritage. The aim of the program is to overcome this deficiency and provide architects the necessary specialization education on the conservation of historic buildings and sites. In the context of these two different scales of conservation in the program, information is given on theories of restoration; principles of contemporary conservation; documentation of cultural heritage; conservation methods and the analysis of traditional materials; traditional structural systems and their problems; national and international legal and organizational regulations; preparation of measured drawings, restitution, restoration and reuse Projects of historical monuments; the evaluation of historic environments; morphological and typological studies; examples of conservation of historic sites from the world and from Turkey; new building approaches in historic sites; theoretical knowledge to develop conservation and rehabilitation Projects for historical environments, and a minimum of two conservation Projects are completed in the program.

The project topics are chosen from either historical buildings or historical environments in Anatolia, in order for the students to learn the characteristics of areas other than Istanbul, and to enable them to work in these areas. Furthermore, the program is enriched through the conferences given by local and foreign experts, and with mutual projects and workshops held in Turkey and abroad in cooperation with the leading universities of our country and Europe. Students, who complete their courses in two semesters, work on their theses, on topics determined with their advisors.

Master of Science in

Urban Planning
(with thesis)
Over the last decades, there has been a great tendency of designing cities via large scale regeneration projects in Turkey and in the world. No doubt this tendency reveals an opportunity for the architects and urban planners. Considering this opportunity, the basic purpose of the MSc Program in Urban Planning is to empower architects and planners, who will intervene in urban space via urban design projects, with adequate knowledge, and to improve their ability of implementation with contemporary urban design method and techniques. Thus, tracking the developments abroad by co-projects and workshops, while providing information and expertise infrastructure in order to define the problem and create solutions are among the goals of the Program. Urban Planning MSc Program, which is directed by the economical, social and political factors and processes shaping urban space, is conducted by experts in various research areas. The program is enriched by a range of courses, entailing an obligation to succeed in 4 compulsory and 4 elective courses complemented by a thesis (24 credits in total). Contemporary developments related with basic concepts and processes such as urban design method and techniques, urbanization, globalization, urban transformation/ urban regeneration, and creative cities are among the interests of the program. In the education process, urban structure, which has a complicated network of relationships, is deconstructed in terms of public spaces at the first hand, examined and reconstructed through main findings and samples on urban design.

Master of Science in

Architectural Engineering
(without thesis)
IKU Master of Science in Architectural Engineering Program in Department of Architecture aims to train architects who will have the necessary knowledge and skills to resolve the problems, encountered from design phase to construction and management phase, in the integration process of the sub-systems which comprise building superstructure. Continuously changing building technologies require efficient and correct use of complex buildings. On the other hand, since an important part of our country is located in seismic zones, the growing scale of construction requires a more conscious and professional expertise, with deeper knowledge on the structural system. The aim of the program is to train professional people having high technical expertise on different systems. In a complex building, due to the importance of system interactions in building quality and performance, it is essential to use different systems (service systems, structural systems etc) efficiently and accurately, and to provide integration among the systems. In this context, it is expected from the architects who will have a professional role in the sector, to be able to assess, select and integrate environmental factors and to use these data in building design. Compulsory and elective courses in the program provide students with sufficient analytical knowledge about each sub-system, and with the ability to integrate their knowledge and skills about the system and the techniques. Master of Science in Architectural Engineering program is suggested for those who want to carry on their professional life in practice or design.

ERASMUS / Lifelong Learning Program

As a sub-program of Lifelong Learning Program (LLP), devised to achieve a common compatibility and modernization within a wide variety of countries that are either members of EU or that are in membership process, the aim of the ERASMUS Program is to encourage and support academic collaborations of higher education institutions in Europe. Through this program, higher education institutions receive financial support for their collaborative projects, and for various exchanges of their students, teaching staff and administrational staff. As in other European countries, higher education students in Turkey are able to take part in the ERASMUS Program through education or summer internship mobility, each being only once throughout their education period. Graduate education level is particularly preferred for mobility in many EU countries because of its flexible and individualized structure, which can be programmed according to the students specialization. Mobility can be realized either during the phase of courses or the phase of thesis. At the graduate level, our department has bilateral agreements with 16 distinguished universities in Europe.

ERASMUS / Student Mobility

Graduate students applying for ERASMUS Student Mobility are selected according to their ERASMUS Grades, determined by the average of their foreign language examination results and their GPAs (Grade Point Average), as well as their rank of preference. After this selection stage, students get the opportunity to study at a higher education institution for one or two semesters, appropriate for their subject of study under the supervision of an academician, speaking one of the international languages, at the institution they choose.

ERASMUS / Summer Internship

In the context of ERASMUS Summer Internship Mobility, which was started in Europe in 2009, students are encouraged to get into contact and arrange an office or an institution to work in the EU countries for 3 months (90 days) to increase their experience in areas of their specialization. In order to apply for this program, in addition to the adequacy of ERASMUS Grades (the average of their foreign language exam and GPA grades) within the rank of the applicants, an invitation letter from the institution is necessary. The salaries of the students are paid by the ERASMUS Fund through our university, depending on the country where the students work. Since the office or the institution does not make any expenses for the intern through the organization of this internationally approved system of ERASMUS, the student has priority of being chosen as an intern by the institution.

ERASMUS and Other International Studies

ERASMUS / Teaching Staff Mobility

Within the framework of staff mobility, the academic staff of our partner universities gives lectures on their study areas in our department. Similarly, the academic staff of our department gives lectures and makes research at partner universities.

Studies Realized and Continued Within the Framework of ERASMUS Programs

A larger group of our graduate students take the advantage of mutual courses, labs and workshop studies with our partner universities which are held parallel or in coordination. In this context, our Master of Science Program in Architectural History and Restoration has carried out an interdisciplinary workshop since 2008, together with five different European architecture schools (Grenoble and Nancy Architecture Schools from France, Porto University from Portugal, Technical University of Athens and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki from Greece), and three other national architectural schools from Istanbul (MSGSU, YTU and ITU). This partnership is held in the context of courses in the program and also includes other short-term workshops in both fall and spring semesters. In addition, Master of Science Program in Architectural Design has initiated a mutual workshop in cooperation with Pecs University from Hungary and Oulu University from Finland starting from 2010.
